Closing long-term Psychiatric units, in favour of home visits and care-in-the-community, has been a disaster. Medications, used to treat extreme "mental" conditions, must be taken as prescribed but often have uncomfortable side effects. Far too many people stop taking them for that reason. Unless or until better medications are discovered, steps need to be taken to protect communities and the patients themselves.

when I was a teenager I was improperly diagnosed as being bipolar, when in reality i had high functioning autism and depression. The medication made me ill, sometimes severely. Dizzy spells were the least harmful thing that happened. Got the shakes, lost my hair, had my eyes roll back in my head to the point of being painful, started getting severe panic attacks and insomnia. They kept adjusting and adjusting, never trying to figure out why the meds weren't working. I still got depressed. I still got anxious and obsessive. 50 mg of Zoloft was all it took to put a stop to it all and start me on the road to recovery.
Those side effects cost me my driver's exam as a teenager, never had a chance to take it again. And they and poor oversight are to blame for my blowing a 10k$ scholarship. Haven't tried to go to college again since, and I'm 34. Made halfassed attempts but... couldn't remember the appointments.
Every time I get a new doctor, of any kind, I tell them about this and I tell them. "Antipsychotic medications WILL cause me to have neurological problems. Please make sure this is noted in my file IN BOLD."

Oh, but that is exactly what happens, that's the current system. Trust them to take their meds, bc you know, they have rights...! Gee, a mental health is mental health, no different than any other kind of health, etc, etc. When obviously SOME mental illnesses are extremely more likely to affect judgment, and represent a danger. Sure, someone with depression is not necessarily dangerous at all, but schizophrenia is different. I'm a psychiatrist; though not a forensic one, and I can tell you, schizophrenic patients are really NOT the ones to be trusted to take their meds, bc this illness affects their insight into their illness, can make them disorganized, and overall lowers their executive functions (planning, organizing, etc) with time. But hey, everyone is swept under the blanket of equal rights. Here you go, the result.

I.e. for example if you have been released from a psychiatric hospital in England you have to report to a hospital every day to get your medication you’re not in charge of it yourself. Everything in this Country always leads back to mental health and our lack of excepting it. We all know that back in the day psychiatric hospitals were horrible but now we could regulate them instead of letting these people roam the streets. So many people hurt just in this one case for no fucking reason. Why was a parole officer in charge of him to begin with! And why are so many dangerous psychiatric disorders deemed acceptable nowadays? For crying out loud his own family didn’t want him released from the hospital now if you’re on momma thinks he dangerous you’re a dangerous!

Yes, indeed so. I truly feel sorry for the people killed but its astonishing that police would react so over the top to a guy clearly locked in the car boot like they are a criminal it's a weird quirk of American policing that confuses the hell out of my British sensibilities. If someone has been kidnapped and undergone a traumatic experience the last thing you need is people aiming guns at you and yelling. It is also astonishing that the police also were so paralyzed that they waited so long before they realised that the shotgun going off was a suicide shot.

My hero in this story is the lady and her son that were dumped out on the side of the road. I felt the narrator though her taking twenty minutes to phone the police was not acceptable. But for me I can only imagine the terror she went through in those twenty minutes not knowing as they walked if this guy might come back and kill them. She has to live with that terror the rest of her life but you will not see any plaques recognizing her heroism.

I had a childhood friend diagnosed with schizophrenia, and also the mother of my ex girlfriend was schizophrenic as well, and from what I could tell they are really not fully competent or aware of what’s happening around them at any given moment, and even the medication they have to take is pretty heavy and fundamentally changes who they are and their behaviour.
I don’t think we’ll ever know the full truth of what was going through this man’s mind as he went on this spree, but honestly I do feel bad for the guy. RIP to all the slain.

Surely such a person should only be kept in a secure facility where not only for others but also for themselves they would receive the proper medical and psychological treatment. It is easy to blame him for what he did but the people who let him out should be blamed.

It’s my understanding we have very few long term psychiatric units anymore. These were heavily criticized due to rampant abuse, which obviously gave them a bad reputation. The current model is to get those who are suffering from a mental break in to a psychiatric unit, treat them as best as possible and let them out to continue their treatment with doctors of their choosing. It’s far from a perfect system and I personally don’t think it’s well designed to handle people with violent impulses.

It's designed to save the government money and satisfy popular sentiment. Tell a member of the public that some people should be kept on a psych ward indefinitely, see what happens...oh, and here's another good one: all you need is "to talk". Because, you know, therapy is the way out of all mental illnesses. That is the most pervasive, prevalent, utterly wrong misconception. The concept is that the way of out mental illness is to open up and talk about it, as opposed to taking medication.
