Gold. Again gold from McDowell and his friends. I just need to digest this, probably listen again, and sort through some applications. Thanks for this challenge, for sure a call to higher ground. I need to read so many books, I've so much to learn, i get overwhelmed at times. Thank God He allows us prayer. Another goal clarifies further, as simultaneously the reasons multiply.

Good question! Doesn’t Paul model this well? He’s powerfully acquainted with the philosophies of the day, which he illustrates in Acts 17.

Sharp! Great question. I think of Paul in Athens, he went in with an understanding of Greek philosophy. He challenged them on their cultures alter to an unknown god. Jesus also knew the law, He had profound insight into the law before He challenged the religious leaders and experts in the law. I ask myself the same question you did, I pray about it. I'm not as well educated as some, not Sean McDowell, and certainly not the Apostle Paul.

Understanding the other side isn't restricted to understanding other religions. This episode was about navigating minefield conversations. What if you and your spouse have a "minefield" that you need to navigate, such as how to discipline children, or how to handle finances, or a disagreement of some kind where productive communication is not happening?

  • @gilwaa

I think scripture teaches us principles of communication and evangelism in books like proverbs or a verse like 1 Pet 3:15. I will reiterate a concern both gentlemen shared, which is to make sure you are solid on your biblical doctrine before engaging with other ideas, so you are not led astray. If you are new to the faith or not solid in your theology, it would be better to engage with the other side via an intermediary, like Mike Winger or Gavin Ortlund.

I have to wonder was he bringing glory to God by doing a play that by his own admission is the lgb sacred text? Was the message he was trying to show, the one that they took from it?

The bifurcation of Americans--e.g., liberals vs. conservatives--is largely a product of the considerations you discussed initially in this interview; people are conditioned by their PREFERRED media into 'us vs. them/all-or-nothing' thinking and thus into political/cultural tribalism. I do think this bifurcation has a deliberate aim and purpose: the dividing of Americans along political self-identity lines and, via such division, the weakening of American national identity along Constitutional and historical lines. I also think an underlying cause of this entire process is that America is undergoing a full court press coup by people with a Marxist ideology and who have been at this process, including infiltration of our government, media, universities, Hollywood, etc. for many decades. The tactics they employ are textbook Marxist tactics and the weaponizaton of language--also known as 'Political Correctness'--is ubiquitous. The primary propaganda tactic feeding into all of this is accusing/blaming your political enemy for what you yourself are doing, which is classic Marxist manipulation.
People do get hung up over mutliple/confilctiing definitions of words. For example--and this one was raised in the interview--the word "argument" has both a formal and an informal definition. The formal definition, which fewer people are aware of, is a logical reasoning structure of thinking consisting of premises that validly lead to a conclusion. The informal definition is a heated discussion (usually lacking in formal structure). The irony of confusing multiple definitions of the same word like this one is heightened when one definition is laudable and good (formal argumentation where logical reasoning/intellect are the essence) but the other definition is unproductive, bad, and even unblblical (hollering at each other where emotional outlet of frustration and vindictive application of personal insult are the essence). With formal argumentation the aim is persuade; with informal argumentation the aim is suppress and demean the other person. What a big difference multiple/conflicting DEFINITIONS can make!
I'm listening to this video interview after its title caught my eye because over the past four years I've been engaging in social media professing Christians who are also flat Earth advocates. I've purposely been respectful--especially when I've not received respect in return--and I have emphasized logic/reasoning/evidence in my interactions with others. I specifically explain to others why I think the flat Earth intepretation fo scripture is wrong and I'm always honest about saying that my motivation for countering flat Earth is on account of the harm I think the view does--e.g., when Christians push it to science-savvy unbelievers as 'what the Bible teaches' and then the unbelievers predictably mock the Bible, God, and the gospel (if they even get so far as the gospel) from that point forward; and also when flat Earth becomes the paramount doctrinal preoccupation for someone to the point that it breaks up their marriage or occasions their leaving their (otherwise good/biblical/sound) church over it. (What a WEIRD DOCTRINAL FOOTNOTE in theology to become an issue some Chiristians will separate from others over!)
Much of the overall bifurcation I intially commented upon here seems fueled and facilitated by the internet and social media. It's as though, by being funneled through the filtering medium of social media, conversation has become something of a VIDEO GAME, where the game is played by engaging other conversants as 'players' and the object is to get your emotional reward by telling them off and, by doing so, feeling triumphant. And I think this is largely where the 'Win the the debate at any cost' mentality comes from and gets cultivated--people want to 'play the video game' and 'win.' People are being reinforced with the inherent reward of a sense of satisfaction from telling others off online IN THE MANNER OF SOMEONE WHO'S PLAYING A VIDEO GAME--and an addictive video game, at that. Imagine that! The internet/social media-as-video-game to recondition people's minds and thinking along these lines functions to help achieve a disunited American society to destabilize the country for Marxist aims and ends. I honestly do think that's what's going on in our country at present.

When it comes to bad people, they were created in the image of God, and Jesus died for them. And Jesus told us to love them. Loving them includes looking for the good in them. Also, we can pray for their salvation. It's more important for them to be right with God than to be right with us.

Non-Christians would be more interested, @seanmcdowell if you guys had an uncompromising committment to truth, honesty, and integrity.
Until y'all call out lying grifters like J. Warner Wallace, and quit praising him, like you did Sean, for not reading books and not being a scholar (while "teaching" people), it's not gonna change.
Why should we trust you guys that you care about truth at all when you embrace and support lies?
When Cam of Capturing Christianity deplatformed Jim Wallace (after promising me time to question him on a live call in show) it proved once again that you guys don't care about uncompromising truth and ethics and honesty.
And what did Wallace (supposedly) tell Cam? He said, "I'm not responsible for people when they lie about my background."
A Christian apologist who doesn't care about lies? Say it isnt' so....lol
The reality is that y'all are seen as jokes when it comes to caring about the truth. It's obvious beyond doubt that you guys care about your platforms and money, not truth.
I'm prepared to be shown I'm wrong by someone, but so far, nobody cares. Nobody wants to stand up for truth.

Unsurprisingly, apologists have to make up more nonsense about their lies being the truth and their lies being love. Happily, they aren't. They have no evidence for their claims, and they whine continuously about how people dare not to believe them blindly.
Meaningful conversations don't work when the christian has nothing but baseless claims. It's not just seeing the world differently, it is knowing that your claims are completely false. Your baseless nonsense can't compete with reality.

    • @mleo2003
      @mleo2003 6 дней назад +4

Not a dumb question at all, as you are right in that in the Old Testament, the Israelites were told to be a people "set apart", and even Christians are told in Romans 12, "Do not be conformed to this world...".
There is a section in 1 Corinthians where Paul says he "became like" other groups in order to know them more and win more to Christ. 1 Corinthians 9:20-22 specifically.
Sean and his guest do say that you don't go all the way to sinning just to "understand more", but what they are advocating does seem to line up with Paul here, and just the fact that Jesus came down as man, to experience what men do. They quote Hebrews 4:15 about "we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses..." as well.
So I think the point the authors, and the Bible, wants us to see is we can't just remain detached from those we wish to reach, as God himself didn't remain detached from us. We are to be in relationship with each other, and try to understand each other better to make that even more possible.
