Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

It is so surreal to hear you have theses conversations about slowing down because finding your channel was my season of slowing down. I had a truly miserable pregnancy last year where I could not get out of bed most days and it was then that I found your channel. And I sat and watched years worth of your videos, one after the other and dreamed of getting out into the garden and being well again. But I knew that I had to rest, for me and the little one I was growing. So thank you for being that refuge for so many of us when we need it. You are truly appreciated and it is so lovely to know that you are appreciating yourself and respecting your needs. Sending love xKate

Love this and agree, I found Jess years back while my Dad was passing, now I have Mom on hospice, and it seems I go no where but hardly rest. It was a great share and I needed it. I do hope you all are enjoying your little “harvest”from that season of rest. ❤️

Hugs Milk Thistle. I reconnected with Jess over a season of postpartum depression after being hospitalized for weeks up to delivery then a month of baby in the NICU. I watched a years worth over a few weeks around the clock on the couch lol. I get it.

I had to slow down seriously twice in the last two years because of injuries. It was incredibly difficult to stop being so busy and accept a slower pace of life. I realized how impatient I can be with myself and circumstances! It taught me to finally come to peace with a slower lifestyle and pacing myself more. No more hamster wheel for me!

I too found Jess while pregnant the beginning of this year! We found out I was expecting the beginning of January. I spent the first 3 months in bed learning from Jess. Long story short- the garden did not do as well as I dreamed lol, but I’m so glad I had those long slow days in bed. I’ve learned so much about life from Jess and Miah over the past year. So so worth the failed garden and the hours binge watching their channel.
I now watch every new video while nursing in the morning. I swear our little one recognizes Jess’ voice!🖤

That's such a sweet memory. My gran is 83, she goes and visits the 'old people' as she calls them, after church on Sundays, it makes me laugh as some of them are her age! Shes been a farmer all her life, always out in her garden and keeping busy with singing, knitting and spending time with her many grand kids, great grandkids and great great grandkids. She says it keeps you young :)

I used to hate gardening, as a kid. At times I just despised it. However, now when I sit and shell peas.......I would give anything to be back shelling peas with my Mom. I think of her every time I shell my purple hull peas. Love her forever. She was such an amazing hard working woman. I am 53 years old so she literally grew the majority of our food. I look back and am blown away at the amount of food this woman put up. We hardly went to the grocery. Grateful for the seeds she sewn in my life and made me shell those peas.

My dad started picking up quilting when my mom was learning how to quilt he used to drive her to the quilting class and he would stay and he ended up learning how. And he does amazing job quilting. When I tell people there always surprised because he's a man. But slowing down and learning something that relaxes you is great for a man or woman. In the society that of today that you always have to go go it's nice to just relax and take it easy and shell peas

Jess, you’ve reminded me of when my daughter was a teen in the early nineties. Her sweet friends would call her and if she happened not to be home, there were a couple of them that I’d end up talking to for a half hour. They’ve all grown up and gone their separate ways-but to this day when I just happen to run into those girls, it’s like old home day. 😊 That sweet relationship is still with us. ♥️. I’m afraid our young generations are missing opportunities that will never repeat themselves-but that’s how the world is today. We have to guide them to make the best of the blessings that come their way. Take care-God bless!😊

I am right there with you sister! My husband has been a huge help in calling it to my attention when I need to slow down and crochet. It's taken me almost 50 years to actively participate in self care. If everyone else was ok, I was too. If I started something, I don't stop until it was done, including clean up. I might have spent the next week in bed, but it was done exactly how I wanted it to be. Now I recognize that done is better than perfect.

Between crocheting in the winter, quilting in the spring and gardening and I also love to pick and shell peas and between them I also do genealogy. After my children grew up and moved out of the house did I realized there is a season for all things.

That was a great conversation. So much of what you and Daniel were talking about regarding slowing down and taking care of yourself really resonated with me. I've spent the past several years in a constant state of stress as a caregiver and have pretty much ignored my own health. I'm feeling that more and more now and your conversation about prioritizing yourself really hit a nerve and made me think a lot about how much I've neglected myself and my own needs. I loved Daniel's comments about stewarding your time to reach your goals. Thank you for the reminder that I need to take a slow down as well. I just might take up crocheting. ;) - Blessings and healing to you as you shell the peas and crochet.

Sweet Daniel! Loved your chat over peas! Wise words on slowing down. Creating margin for rest and recovery is hard in a world that rewards the high achievers who are the most driven and productive. But too much of that and we are burnt out. We need room for our souls to breath. That requires adjusting our life so that slowing down enough to embrace recovery and resilience become a ritual. It’s as important as healthy food.

I wake each day with the thought that I MUST accomplish something that day, forgetting, I think, that there can be intentionality in not worrying about accomplishment. Thanks for this very timely reminder that sometimes the best we can do for those around us AND for ourselves is to just be still. What a lovely conversation you've had today with Daniel. So happy you've shared this friendship with your viewers - it's just precious. And helped me A LOT today.

My grandparents were sharecroppers in south Georgia, and they had six rocking chairs on their screened-in front porch. From the time I was little, when you went to their house in the summer, you sat on the front porch with an enamel pan and shelled peas. You just rocked and shelled peas with grownups and kids together. We kids always wanted to snap more peas than we shelled, and granny would gently encourage us to actually SHELL them instead. My fingers would get sore after awhile. I still remember the feeling of running my fingers through the shelled peas after I had a good amount. A pan full of shelled peas is a very good feeling.

We once had a home across a pond from a neighbor's cattle pasture. We heard calves bellowing all night at times due to weaning so yes it is hard to hear. By the way Kaye Kittrell who has the "Late Bloomer" site here on RUclips, was occasionally a guest Actress on "The Gilmore Girls" TV series. She is recently a small homestead owner, having moved back to TN a couple of years ago from Los Angeles.

Do you know what I like about this channel besides your name is Jess my goddaughters name. And she is not my goddaughter in the sense of when she was born and I was at her baptism, but when her Mom passed and gave her to me to watch over. It has been a 40 year relationship. But she became my God daughter 17 years ago. And she is so knowledgeable like you Jess. She had a lovely little farm in NC. Anyway we all have to slow down, because you can’t go any faster than now or where you always are. Everything has a season and a time within the season. But what I love is Jess is down earth, smart, and just real! It makes me happy to watch the channel. It’s relaxing and educational. Thank you for being there! ❤️🙏🪴

I could sit and listen to you and Daniel talk for hours. 🥰
I stood at my bench and snapped green beans, that we’ve grown in our garden while you two shelled your peas. ☺️
Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom with me.

I really loved this video. I was able to connect it to my life and how I never seem to give myself the grace to relax. Over the years this has really affected me, and now I am learning that it is ok to sit down. To not feel guilty about taking that time to sit down. To understand that when I say “no” to something, it is the activity I’m saying no to, and not the person. Thank you ❤
