  • In this short video, Dr Sanjay Gupta addresses a concern that a lot of people have as to whether their PVCs, PACs and ectopics could be damaging their heart. My website is www.yorkcardiology.co.uk

    I get 20,000 a day. I have had them my whole life. I've hiked the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachian Trail, walked up a 20 story building. I have an otherwise healthy heart. I get it checked every year. I do get unexplained waves of anxiety every 6 months to a year, but I know what it is, and I deal with it. If I keep my nutrition clean, get a good 9 hours of sleep, and stay hydrated, I hardly ever notice them.
    2024 (5 year) Update: my PVCs have disappeared. Once my cardiologist put me on 25 mg metoprolol tartrate twice a day, my PVCs completely disappeared. I no longer have them.

    I just want to start with a thank you from the bottom of my heart to you Sanjay Gupta (hope you reed this). My anxiety level went from very high to almost zero after watching your video (and some of your other videos). No doctor has really took the time to explain this condition like you do. Ive been having pvcs or pacs for almost 5 years, first i just noticed them occasionally, the last year they started to come for aproximatly 1-2 weeks constantly and then disapear for 1-2 weeks constantly. When i have an episode i have roughly between 3000-10000 per 24 hour, without any symptoms other then the anxiety that follows. I guess my lifestyle with to much alcohol, nicotine, bad diet, lack of sleep, high anxiety levels and an overly internal focus on whats happening in my body are to blame and has messed with my inner chemical/electrical state. The last year ive started to change theese bads habits and its going well, Next week im going to a cardiologist to take a few tests. I hope i have a structurally good heart so i can move forward with my life. So thank you again Sanjay you really made a big difference in my life. Best regards Johan From Sweden.

      I'm literally in the exact same boat as you. I drank heavily, smoked, had an irregular sleep schedule, and am under quite a lot of stress with work and family. As you also said, the anxiety that comes from being aware of the ectopics can also exacerbate them. The important thing is that we recognize these habits and change them.

    I just completed an entire home workout program for the first time in 4-1/2 months since my ectopics started. It feels like quite a victory! There were some odd heartbeats here and there while I was exercising but nothing too unusual.
    My problems started with a prolonged sustained SVT attack 224 bpm for 4 hours, June 2. Ever since, I've struggled with ectopics and trying to avoid having another SVT attack. I've had one more sustained SVT but was able to shut it down after about 10 - 15 minutes using vegus exercises.
    Your video lectures have helped me gain confidence that my heart isn't going to stop suddenly, as long as it's beating along, and seems to be improving, I am probably more than likely, going to be just fine. The Cardiologist found my heart completely normal, EKG and echo were 100% fine. A two week heart monitor found three brief episodes, otherwise "unremarkable". So I'm scheduled for a stress test next week. Meanwhile doing everything I possibly can, to figure out any triggers, and any things I can do to reduce ectopics on my own. My greatest concern is having another SVT attack, somewhere that I cannot get to medical help. We live on a remote ranch in Montana.
    Thanks for these thorough, compassionate, educational videos helping people understand things we've never even had to think about before. Thanks so much.

      What kind of Vegus Nerve Exercises do you use to cut the palpitations off?

    • @hmccbaird
      @hmccbaird 2 года назад

      @@mase8189 The first one I try is just curling up, hold my breath, and clamping down as hard as I can on my midsection. This works with a minor episode.
      My husband helped me shut down the worst episode in my recovery, using the maneuver where you lie on your back, blow/push hard as if blowing into a syringe as if to push the plunger back... I used my thumb. Blow against it as hard as you can with pressure (not air). Then have your helper raise up your legs about 45* angle. Repeat this. It took three times before my HR dropped.

    I started having palpitations that i could feel about 6 weeks ago. I went to my doctor and told her i can feel my heart skip beats and sometimes i feel dizzy and tired. I am 43 Male. I also been Vegan 2 1/2 years now. I play ice hockey and basketball once or twice a week. So I consider myself a pretty healthy person. I do have anxiety and my bad habits are i was smoking weed and drinking coffee everyday.
    Doc told me lay off the caffeine and stop smoking weed so i did. I do stress out sometimes due to life and also having my own small business.
    My doctor gave me a halter monitor test for 24 hours. I felt fine during the test. I honestly didn’t even think it would catch anything but it came back 6300 PVCs and like 50 PACs in 24 hours.
    I was surprised and it did scare me a bit. They set up a echo cardio gram for 2 weeks from today. Since then i have been having episodes. Usually bad days where i can feel my heart skip beats almost every 5 or 6 beats for hours.
    Its a very scary and uncomfortable thing. I just pray that its not a heart problem.
    Question is this: what percentage of people with 1000s of pvcs actually end up taking the echocardiogram and find something. I am like super scared waiting for this test. They said it was “ocassional but how is 6 percent “occasional” it says online over 10,000 or 10% you should be really concerned. The time i took the halter i felt fine. Makes me wonder how much worse it would show on a bad day? Which has been happening about every 4 days.
    I am completely new to this. Any advice would be great. Any advice on how i should approach the doctor about this. So far they act like its no big deal. The appointment was scheduled 3 weeks out as well. Thanks for listening
    You should also know all my blood work came back fine. I also have Bradycardia which my doctor said is normal. My heart beats get as low as 40 BPM at sleep. I know because of my apple watch thats how i found out. They said Thats just how my body operates and don’t be concerned.
    Thank you for your videos.They did make me feel better.

    My cardiologist says I should not worry about my ectopic beats. I have both PAC and PVC. Between 5k-10k a day. He said that in people my age, 30, with a structual normal healthy heart tend to have unadressed stress that triggers the heart. I am not sure about others, but I have zero ectopic beats when I sleep, so as soon as my head turns off, my ectopics disapear. Maybe its all stress/anxiety. My quality of life is not existent. I hate this.

    Thank you Dr. Gupta, I very much appreciate the time you take to explain in detail the PVCs that I encounter. Over the past 12 years they are becoming worse and more frequent. I use to drink 16 oz. Of carrot juice everyday for three years and that really helped. Unfortunately my PVCs came back with a vegance. The last two years I've been drinking lots of water, and now I added magnesium to my diet. It has help somewhat, but I still get many PVCs throughout the day almost everyday. This is truly ruining my life. I've seen 4 cardiologist and they tell me they are benign. My heart is structurly sound and my cholesterol level is good. I don't drink sodas, nor alcohol, and only drink one cup of coffee a day. I eat a plant base diet . I've taken low dose beta blockers and that mildly helps at best. I have a 16 month old daughter and a wonderful wife, but these PVCs are destroying my quality of life.

      I understand your pain. Going on 6 months now with mine. At least 100-150 per day. Doctors say not to worry, but if its nothing to worry about they wouldnt be occuring in the first place. I used to smoke weed and drink on occassion. Stopped all that, and they still go on all day everyday. Wakes me up outta my sleep sometimes. I do have anxiety but even when im not under any stress, I still get em 24-7. Some days are better than others. There have been some days where I might only get 10-15 a day, but overall, its still making my life miserable. Im considering getting ablation. Not even sure if that will make em go away. It sucks. I just want a normal heart like I had before. Sucks knowing Im only 43 and there are 100 yr old people with a better operating heart than mine.

    What about when your ectopics continue for a while, up to a few hours. Like atrial tachycardia/SVT/PACs/PVCs?

    Mine often seem to be related to my hypothyroid condition - if that's not managed then the ectopics come back; when thyroxine is too low or too high. Thanks for your reassuring videos...

    Hi again, may I just ask , do you get a lot of women with these , mine started at the age of 26 , and found around ovulation they were worse , then I hit 35 and boom ended up in hospital every time I ovulated , it was reckin my life , fast foward to now , seen professor studd in London, and we found a link with progestrone!! It got to the PIONT I had these beats for 2 days none stop ! I eaven was put on the cardiac ward , all in synus rythem thank god , anyway I had a full hystorectomy last March . And they stopped 👌🏼🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼 still get the odd one in the day and night , but I think hormones can play a part ! Now on biodentical estrogen no progestrone, and feeling very well , just thought I would share that with you , I was getting fluttering, skipped beats , Svt , was horrible, I had echo and have a implant loop in to keep an eye on things , but all normal , but if I turn quick or bend over I sometimes get them , like my heart has the hiccups, but progestrone made mine worse x

    I’m confused. I’ve talked to 3 other cardiologists that said skipped beats, no matter how many you get won’t do anything to your heart. Sometimes bigeminy is someone’s regular heart rhythm. So if this is the case how can this person survive?

    • @trevorjameson3213
      @trevorjameson3213 Год назад

      All he is saying in the video is that A FEW people (very low number), MAY have weakening of the heart if they have thousands of ectopics per day for years on end. Which means that most people will not have weakened hearts. There is a huge variation is people, and their health status, so he's covering all bases, that's all. And I have read about people with bigeminy as their normal rhythm, and it was described as a "variation of normal". The people don't die from it. I'm assuming the heart compensates for the second beat (ectopic) not pumping as much blood as the first (regular beat). However, if a person who has had a heart attack, bypass, stents, damage, etc, ends up with bigeminy, then the doctors will use medication to correct the issue.

    How exactly does the heart weaken and why does it weaken if there are 1000’s of pac’s/pvc’s? If they aren’t damaging from a few hundred

    • @Serrotonin
      @Serrotonin 3 года назад +1

      Years and years of squeezing without an adequate amount of blood on the squeeze. Less resistance on those beats and it compounds over time weakening it like a muscle
