It's more her phrasing style. Tone-wise, Sarah's sound is a bit warmer. Sarah loves to dip real hard into her chest on the lower notes and then flip seamlessly up into her head. Dee Dee is just a little more gutteral with her sound, as she tends to be more chest voice dominant than Sarah was on the higher notes. Sarah would mix and use more head voice on the mid to higher notes. I would say that Dee Dee, in this case, may be more like Ella. I think she has both influences of Sarah and Ella.
The one who wrote "better than Ella" needs an accurate check up to his hearing, the scat of Bridgwater is heavy and not spontaneous while Ella was flying high with her blessed voice..... so high that even taking an airplane Bridgewater can remotely come close to Ella.
Sorry. She’s copied Miss Ellas interpretation. So many of these so called great jazz singers do this, and I personally find it totally embarrassing. Just stick to what you know. And if you look at Miss Ella when she scats, there is no dramatics, like what Dee Dee Bridgewater is doing here. I find it very off-putting.
I just came from listening to Ella Fitzgerald, and I don’t see where this lady copied her at all… If it this is one of the most different versions from Ella’s that I have heard, if not the most.
Ella invented scatting. At the time she was singing, NO ONE else was doing what she was and she created a lane for herself and mastered it. EVERY jazz singer LEARNS how to scat from Ella & they create their own interpretation because it's not an easy thing to do. What you call "dramatic" is Ms. Bridgewater "feeling" the music in the performance. There's no copying here; just her own interpretation. It may be off putting to you, but nothing to be embarrassed about.
