When I worked in Alaska one wet summer, we all had caulk boots. Basically old school golf shoe spikes. Amazing grip on wet logs. So it makes sense that studded tires will grip wet wood better.
It's amazing how much traction those kinds of tires provide. Last winter the ice skating rink at the local park was really slick during a really cold week, but I was able to ride my bike on it without any worries. If I had tried walking, I would have fallen for sure.
Wow. That's amazing how much grip you get from the dubs. Gives me high hope for my plan to put a Pirelli Scorpion MX Extra J 80/100-12 50M tire with BestGrip dubs on my Inmotion V14 this winter.
I thought about getting spiked tires for years before finally getting a set last year. They are typically not cheap, but I found a set on sale. I should have gotten a pair years ago. Where I am in New England we really don't get much of a winter, but plenty of weeks with partially or fully iced up trails. You should try them on wet leaf covered or rooty trails, such a difference. Those schwalbes are nice, my 3.0 spiked tires are great but I shed spikes if I ride hard in mixed conditions. I raced an enduro with them and shed most of the studs on the rear tire! For the shoes, I am primarily a trail runner and adopted spiked orienteering shoes, mostly while running for inov-8 from the UK. I used to race obstacle races in them, made the wooden climbing obstacles pretty easy, until they were banned! Inov-8 and icebug make good spiked orienteering, winter running shoes. They do not have the same traction on pedals as bikes shoes, but if it is winter conditions and/or you want traction on wet logs and/or or hiking around (waterproof is nice for snow and colder days), they are the the way to go. I enjoy your natural trails footage, nice work!
been using these tyres during winter. the grip on ice and snow is great. also i usually ride them with a bit less pressure than that. it seems to make the grip even better but i have never hopped logs so i have no idea if that is viable for log hopping.
Hi Ali like the new bike you kept that quiet 😂😂 at 10:38 wtf you’re crazy and Fairplay that could’ve gone wrong Big time. Go back home last Sunday from my epic 3 month trip to my friend who lives in the Highlands in the middle of nowhere his Internet Signal shocking So Sorry for not watching videos lately
Given nearly all of my crashes on local singletrack are wet sniper roots, id be tempted by these. The tarmac and any rocky sections inbetween might be a bit painful 🤣
We could have indoor events that take trials to the tactile dimension. Indoor and TV ready. Each section has different textures in it. You pick your tire design and grip to master it. I say look into sandpaper treads. Or mud spikes with sand in the rubber itself.
Are the metal studs just rivets punched into the wheel, the metal bit sticking out does not seem very sharp but round, maybe if sharper it would help more even, seems like it works well thought, nice!
You really should try spike shoes on rubber pedals (maybe DIY with tire rubber inserts?). Could result in an interesting video and save your legs from hurting.
Schwalbe ice spikers were some of the worst tires i ever fitted. They blew off the rim with tubes. I never had to fit additional rimtape for a tubed tire to make it stay on the rim before. Excellent on ice though.
@@Ali_Clarkson mavic 317 (i think, but have to check again), so nothing special or unusual, had fitted continental and nobby nics tubeless on them before without issues, but the ice spikers blew off the rim even with tubes. Had the same issue with a magic mary debeading on my bontrager wheels while tubeless, on a downhill. Quiet scary. Thank you for answering Ali.
@@keithjones4702 Something along the lines of having better control over the rear wheel or something? I don't know, I've never tried clips. Just seems like a good idea.
Hey ali. I have question for you. Why do Danny macaskill dont ride the low riser bars anymore like he did in 2009. I ask you becouse i Think you have the answer and i Can’t ask Danny himself(Busy man😅)
Inspired do different height bars? 😯 Well if true, I can only think it’s because he’s using a longer (higher) stem and lower bars will maintain the height he’s used to
@ no no they dont make different bars its just becouse now he rides the normal 70mm rise inspired bars but back then he used a low and long stem with a set of low rise bars😁
I don't ride spiked tires for 2 reasons, first, I don't want to get impaled and become a kebab, and second, they cost a substantial amount of the price of my bike
@@Ali_Clarkson I stopped paying hundreds for mountain bike trousers when I found that 14 quids worth of stretch demin jeans worked better! Move well, fit well, look good, robust.
DHL log rider.
He's never gonna wear that again now 😅
You're really DELIVERING today! 😂
Imagine living in a forest area full of fallen logs on the road..and you´re awaiting a package from Ali-express..
Looking forward to the...Delivery...of part 2. (I've been Ice Spike curious for over a decade, so jokes aside, this is fascinating.)
😂
10:19 that back pedal stall was fire!
Haha I was quite happy with that 😂
Gotta say the level of grip with them was quite impressive! More please!
Soon soon
Might say, you nailed that. 😅
😂
What a great idea! Impressive how well it worked too. Love the red and yellow jersey with black sleaves look too
Fantastic tires! To be honest, I didn't even know something like this was for sale. Perfect for winter fooling around on my dirt bike.
When I worked in Alaska one wet summer, we all had caulk boots. Basically old school golf shoe spikes. Amazing grip on wet logs. So it makes sense that studded tires will grip wet wood better.
I needed some of those and rubber pedals 😋

I suspect the maximum grip you could ever get on a bike is with spike tyres on ice!
Are you working for DHL now, Ali? Or are you wearing that because you also "send it"... 🥁
Cute Thief Transportation Division. Somebody needs to move those parts around.
@ShredBikesPetKitties those pawts..... Please. 😂
Just liked how warm it is :)
I really did not think this would work. Real nice find Ali!
Thank you :)
Me: Hmm, I wonder if my package is delayed.

Canadian winter: Need studs because snow and ice.
Scottish winter: Slippery logs.
🤣
Wish we got more snow 😢
Wow,impressive result
Yes, thanks
I was going to make a delivery joke but I guess others have beat me to it. Wonderful riding as usual!!

That’s why my parcel hasn’t arrived today! 😂

such a silly idea, i love it !
😁
Spiked tyres was a great idea, i wandered if they caused the puncture and if you noticed extra weight, thanks Ali
Didn’t really notice the weight :)
The DHL long-sleave YOOOO!!! 😃

Awesome Idea, awesome Video! So awesome they are on ice etc. , so awful they are on hard surfaces like road 😄
Good for ice but make rocks and tarmac feel like ice!
Are the metal studs just rivets punched into the wheel, the metal bit sticking out does not seem very sharp but round, maybe if sharper it would help more even, seems like it works well thought, nice!
They’re a bit sharper than a standard rivet but they’re not needle sharp either
Really good Ali 👍👍👍👊
Thank you :)
brilliant idea!
Thank you! Cheers!
You should also test the non EVO version of the ice spiker pros. They have really sharp flat end spikes that grip even better.
Noted!
You needed that shirt for when you did the wheelie with the packages in Danny MacAskill's adidas video
Couldn’t have any branding in that video :(
I can’t believe what I’m seeing. You are crazy but a genius. That grip shouldn’t be happening 😂 👍
I was shocketh!
i like this kinda expermients =)

Saw that done before and I did think it would’ve been the perfect combo for this ride!
I've been looking at these for my gravel bike. Pretty pricey, though. I may just try the diy method.
All for the logistics
I want to see a trials comp on these tyres
And there you go introducing a whole new class of trials.
Niche of a niche 😂
Please try them on other surfaces like concrete or metal if it makes sense
1:38 you can get spike shoe bottom for like 4 euro. they are very cheap.
Having used studded tires on ice before, I expected they'd serve you pretty well on the logs.
Next up, icy logs!
@@Ali_Clarkson Better get some crampons on your shoes for that one!
Did you notice losing some studs while doing tricks? I noticed that I lose some when riding through wintry woods.
Didn’t lose any studs :)
Brilliant
Considering how slippery studded tires are on concrete, they'd likely be just as sketchy on rocks, so be careful.
Oh yeah no way I could ride these on anything hard!
Well, it appears these tyres make quite the difference. I think you'd never consider riding that moist moss otherwise ❤
I think so too!

Spiked shoes on metal pedals might not be the greatest idea you've ever had.
He needs more views. But i think trail is a very tiny nieche
And a more RUclips friendly personality I suspect
@Ali_Clarkson naaah maybe you need to try out the edit scene a little bit more
Awesome
I need that jersey 😅
Did you follow the tyre break-in procedure? Have you lost any studs yet?
No I didn’t and no I haven’t :)
Looks very difficult! I would not try this!
Can’t say it’s easy!
Those tires might be great for ice but I think the spikes might be too short to dig into the wood, adequately.
They definitely had limits
So why are there no comp trials riders on clips? Not allowed by the UCI as well?
Why would you want clips?
Because they don’t want to die 😂
@@keithjones4702 Something along the lines of having better control over the rear wheel or something? I don't know, I've never tried clips. Just seems like a good idea.
@@YanDoroshenko Try it. Then upload your video while lying around in the hospital.
clips are awesome for riding distances, but i would never be clipped in while crashing 😅

My cats approve this statement; pointy grips makes you climb on trees.
The kings of spikes
Ahh i was right... that was what you had planned 😉
Funny how my thoughts were exactly DHL like many other here. You’ve accidentally made DHL look cool!
I’ll send them an invoice
I don't ride spiked tires for 2 reasons, first, I don't want to get impaled and become a kebab, and second, they cost a substantial amount of the price of my bike
Those spikes don’t come cheap
Isn't that going to be a problem when you switch back to regular tires and suddenly you can't stick to the sides of a log like a squirrel?
Hadn’t thought of that!
insane :P
Ali, DHL Is your new sponsor?😁
Nope
Great riding. strange question but are you wearing jeans to ride in?
Yes I am, I usually ride trials in jeans
@@Ali_Clarkson I stopped paying hundreds for mountain bike trousers when I found that 14 quids worth of stretch demin jeans worked better! Move well, fit well, look good, robust.
DHL a new sponsor?
Nah
This video is sponsored by DHL
I wish
How will those tyres work on seaweed encrusted rocks?
Fwiw, I think you were running too high a tyre pressure.😮
I wouldn’t trust them on any rocks!
Pressure was pretty spot on, any softer and they’ll start to fold and become unpredictable
Ali, your bike is wearing a pair of 5-10's with studs, shouldn't both of you be wearing 5-10's with studs??
More like studded Ride Concepts!
