Chronos opens with a segment where squares will be sprayed from the right side of the screen to the left. A few seconds into the segment, two triangles will appear and position themselves somewhere in the middle of the screen then fire three lines of circles directly in front of them. A checkpoint is located after the second triangle fires its circles. The second segment follows the same square spray pattern as the first, but horizontal lines will briefly indicate where lasers will fire. Multiple lasers can be on screen at a time and they appear quite quickly. Halfway through the segment, pulse bombs will take turns appearing on the top right or bottom right of the screen and exploding into rings of eight circles. Four of these appear before a giant version of these circles appears in the middle of the screen. It will begin growing larger, and a checkpoint is reached here. After the second checkpoint, the bomb will explode into numerous rings of sixteen circles each. Lasers with warning will appear identically to the second segment. After a while, vertical lasers will start appearing instead of the horizontal ones, and squares will start being sprayed from the right of the screen to the left again. After a few seconds, horizontal and vertical lasers will begin appearing together, and black holes will fire. During this circular pattern, the third checkpoint will appear. The fourth area starts off a bit calmer - the square spray stops and lasers fire more slowly. Black holes will still appear. A few seconds into the segment, squares will start being sprayed from the right and horizontal lines will start appearing again. Halfway into the segment, everything stops until the fourth checkpoint appears. The fifth segment starts off with pulse bombs appearing alternatively from the bottom right and the top right. A few seconds in this will stop to make way for walls (giant versions of the lasers), and at about three quarters of the segment, three black holes and four pulse bombs will appear on the right of the screen. The walls continue appearing, with the final checkpoint appearing during this segment. The final area still generates walls, and squares are sprayed from the right of the screen continuously during this segment until around the three quarters mark. At this point, the spray will stop, and the only obstacle will be the walls. The lines will eventually stop too, and a Triangle will appear. Collect it to finish the level. Hardcore mode changes In hardcore mode, lasers, walls and black holes have less reaction time. Pulse bombs explode into much more pellets. Other than that, nothing much has changed.

I like to write stories based on songs I listen to, writing timestamps for each part of the song that corresponds with the story. I'll edit until I finish. 0:00 - 0:07: You are standing in front of a castle in an 8-bit world where everything is green. After a couple of deep breaths, you enter, intent on delivering a message to the king inside. 0:07 - 0:15: You start walking down the long hall leading to the throne room. It's eerily empty. 0:15 - 0:22: Strange, large particles start to emerge from the floor and burst themselves, releasing a very hot substance that could only be lava. Was the castle normally like this, or had the virus already reached it...? 0:22 - 0:28: The particles get much bigger as you approach the final door, where a guard stands in front, holding his battle axe. As you walk up to him to explain your situation, everything around you abruptly starts twitching like crazy, like a visual glitch. The guard seems to have been turned aggressive. 0:29 - 0:43: The guard lunges forward to attack you, and you barely dodge. You don't have any weapons apart from a small stick, so you're left with no option but to run around and let the guard tire itself out. 0:43 - 0:57: The guard, exhausted, suddenly seems outright confused. He slowly gets up and asks, "What just happened?" You reply, "The Virus. I have come to warn your King." The guard proceeds to let you into the throne room, where you walk up to the king and start explaining. The king tries to say, "Dear God, how could this have happe--" 0:58 - 1:14: Alas, it was too late. The king starts glitching uncontrollably, trying his hardest to control himself. You gradually step back until you hit the closed door behind you, unsure what's going to happen next. 1:14 - 1:28: The king starts to glitch-teleport around and attempt to kill you. You initiate another long dodge cycle. At one point, the king laughs, and he no longer sounds like himself. Whatever this virus is, there's no stopping it. But that makes you wonder, why hasn't it gotten to you yet? 1:28 - 1:42: The fight continues, but the virus's possession of the king seems to be slipping ever so slowly. He can shoot lasers now, and one hits you on the side of your shoulder. 1:43 - 1:50: The fight slows to a stop, and the king breaks free from the virus's control. He has no idea what just happened. For a moment, you can both see everything fall apart around you before it blips back into place. The king is left in a state of haze, so you return to the guard. 1:50 - 2:04: You talk with the guard while the world around you starts to glitch. You try to come up with a plan to stop this virus, but it doesn't even have a physical manifestation. How can you kill it? (In the context of this story, the guard has his own leitmotif, and I love that.) 2:04 - 2:18: The castle starts to crumble for real, and you both immediately run to get the king. He's still lying on the ground, trying his hardest to get out of his haze, but he can't. You end up having to carry him out of the castle, barely making it out alive with everyone. (Stumped on how to continue. I'll come back later.) Back! 2:18 - 2:26: Suddenly, a little dude with legs appears before you and starts rambling about random jokes. For a moment, you all laugh with him. "Ha, classic Little Dude!" The guard says. 2:26 - 2:39: As Little Dude laughs, you realize that it's the same laugh that came from the corrupted king earlier. Could Little Dude be behind this virus, or was he another puppet...? You all uneasily back away as he laughs louder and louder, luckily not attacking, until you decide to run far away.
