I like that the tavern doesn't force you to keep regular hours. If you need to spend the day crafting, you can keep the tavern closed until you're ready to deal with customers.
True, the flexible gameplay loop is very satisfying. I think they've got a good core down, it just needs the upcoming features and some more polish but other than that, I think Traveler's Rest is headed for a good release.
Yes it a bit easier to manage things. Playing stardew valley, there is so much to do in 1 day. I don’t remember, but I recall there also a stamina system which limit your freedom of activities.
Seems like a great twist on your typical farming game. I really like the idea of managing a business from the supplies you gather like in Dave the Diver.
I should really give Dave the Diver a go. I missed its peak since I was deep in Dragon's Dogma but now that I've completed that game I have more time to put into other ones. Dave the Diver seems to have a very addictive gameplay loop and a passionate dev team based on what I've seen.
I thought I was watching a big indie-game youtuber's review. Holy crap, your editing and composing skills is phenomenal. You're gonna be big one day if you keep this up! 👍👍 ps. thx 4 this very informative vid
Thank you! That makes me so happy to hear that coming from somebody who's made it! I'm glad you found this video helpful. With Chef RPG coming very soon, this game has big battle coming its way but I hope it reaches its full potential once it releases. I had a great time playing it and will surely be back again once new features are added.
when you talked about the future plans of this game, I GOT EXCITED. I did NOT KNOW what the future plans were. IF THEY HAPPEN, the game will be great, just like stardew!!
A very comprehensive video, thank you for sharing! I'd also like to note that there will be a new update this month, which will add many things. This includes but is not limited to: seasons, a staff system overhaul, and a new alcohol aging system. This info can be found in the roadmap, as you said. The specific date is not available, but an announcement in the discord confirmed that the new update should release sometime this month!
Appreciate you commenting! Super excited for what's to come. Hopefully more people give Travellers Rest ago, I believe it has a big chance to solidify itself in the cozy games genre and I'd love to see it reach its full potential!
uhhh...sorry to break it to you, but the NEW update has created LOTS of problems. NOW, i actually love the game and have had NO problems int he past three weeks of playing. Its good game. BUT..the new patch changes good things, to seem "stylish" but all it did was make it more challenging and buggy, especially with the kegs and Taps of bar, and more difficult to serve customers while they are at table ALONG WITH keeping tavern clean and giving out orders at the customers at bar. Its hectic. DON'T PUT OUT MORE than two big tables and one small one, unless you are ready. THE GAME HAS POTENTIAL, but make no mistake "@FastidiousFrog"...the game NOW HAS BUGS. Bugs that i can see. Sometimes, my character will freeze at bar. I FIXED ONE OF THE PROBLEMS concerning kegs, but NEW problems are arising. Its not worth my headache for while.
I think so too! I think the fact that they were able to achieve such a solid and addictive gameplay loop this early is an amazing start as that will be what makes or breaks these kinds of games. Now they're in a great position to add depth into the game with the rest of the features that are yet to be implemented.
I've been playing it recently, the season system didn't make your tavern colder in the winter. You only need to light the fireplace after 8pm like the rest of the seasons and there are seasonal seeds that got added
really looked out for a game like this, cause i searched for something cozy where I can be in my own little Mittle Earth haha (big lotr fan) and cause there are not a lot of good lotr games, i think i can really embrace my medieval side here!
It's a very chill game! The developers are constantly updating it too which is very exciting. Just excited to see what it'll be like once it fully releases.
This game has so much potential, I stopped playing since it just became repepitive. After the tutorials, I felt lost, no goals, and no main story. I was hoping there would be interactions with your customers like coffee talk. Being a tavern keeper is all about the company and the friends we meet along the way😊
I would personally hold judgement for this until the game is finished. The early access version of Travellers Rest really just included some of the very core elements, and not anything that enriches it outside of serving customers. If you want to see what they've got cooking in development, I'd suggest following their roadmap, as it's much closer to what you mentioned as compared to what he have playable at the moment.
Although I love the game, I AGREE WITH KAGANATH, in that NOW.....only now,....yeah, I am noticing that it si REPETITIVE. I want some new things. There are still some challenges. But I need more than cooking, making money in tavern and building my skills. I want the new areas to open up. I want some more "lite " quests. I would like to chop trees outside my area. It is difficulty finding fruits when foraging. There are some. The Tavern serving customers part of game, can really wear you out UNTIL you can afford staff. Seriously. You can hunt down turkey. And the few people you talk to around town and in the rural farm, are limited in dialogue. IT CAN GET OLD. the most adventurous thing is YOU CAN BUILD UP your tavern to look pretty cool, big and ornate. but that is about it.
I love the game and recently even FIXED one of the bugs that arose out of the NEW patch. But...there are still some new difficulties. Been playing for 3 weeks, and no problems like OTHERS have had [ I play on a PC which does better than Xbox or Playstastion on Travellers Rest [. BUT,..EVERY TIME there is a major update, your saved games have PROBLEMS. things change in game. I have heard from others online and on STEAM DISCUSSION area, that sometimes people have to start over from scratch. CONCLUSION: WAIT UNTIL ITS TOTALLY FINISHED. Then it will be a great game.
I think the game has tavern-related content for like 30 hours (I have 40) and if you buy the game on steam sale it's totally worth it. The devs push updates regularly too and there are always events like Xmas event or upcoming Halloween event
Thanks for a great and detailed review. It seems a bit too complicated and stressful for me, having to manage customers AND a farm. Looks like a major time sink. But it seems like a good game.
I love that you’ve done this review so I can effectively make my mind up, so I don’t waste my money on games that look good but are actually garbage. Sir I thank you
love the game, but the most annoying stuff about it, are the unmoveable rocks and ore's on my main farm land xD i wish that they change it, so that there is a mine (maybe even tho one currently blocked) where i can get my ressources instead of those annoying rocks on my farm that i cant destroy or move out of my layout
If I remember right, the developer said that those rocks are temporary until they complete the mine area. Take this with a grain of salt though, it's been a while lol
I'm very conflicted on this game. I'd like to try it but there are a lot of review that contradict other ones. Like for instance I see a lot of people claiming after a few hours there wasn't much to do but then others claim it has around 30 hrs or so of stuff before it turns into a looper. People also claim updates are few and far in between and not much as came in 4 yrs but then the roadmap seems to indicate they're have been regular updates. My main issue is I have too many games that I already dont play due to " trying " was a tutorial that took 2 hours to get through and then I lost my chance to refund since games drag them out but make sure that the tutorial is fun then after words is where the true colors come out xD
That's an understandable concern, in that case I would recommend waiting for this one to fully release before trying. Playing this game right now pretty much means you're there to enjoy one aspect and one aspect of the game only which, if you really enjoy tavern management you'll probably think the game has a decent amount of content and things to unlock. But if you're interested in anything besides that, it's not there yet and you'll be disappointed.
Thank you! I'm not sure if they shared the release date yet but you can follow their public Trello Board roadmap to the game to see how the development is progressing! trello.com/b/CYmkOXl4/travellers-rest-roadmap This board not only contains the next update, but also planned content, ideas, etc.
@@Kaganath Thank you so much! Do you know if all features on the lists are planned before the release, or is 'very long term' considered as an update after release? If so, we're getting pretty close!
@@Drion086 I believe these are planned for full release. The development team is quite small so I'd expect this game to stay in early access for a couple more years.
@@Kaganath Ah that's unfortunate. The game looks incredibly promising already tho, I'm sure the wait will be worth it. Thank you very much for the info!
I'm not sure if it's coming to mobile like Stardew Valley did, it's probably a great idea to visit their Discord server and ask the devs directly. But there is local co-op available right now.
WHOOOOOOO YOU CAN MAKE LAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LAGER LAGER LAGER YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WHOOOOOOOOOOO EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE LAGER I WISH STARDEW VALLEY ALLOWED LAGERING... IS THERE A MOD WITH LAGER? LAGERRRRRRRRRRRRRR
It's still very early stages with only one part of the core gameplay loop intact. Travellers Rest might need a couple more years of dev time before being able to really show what it's about so I'm just keeping an eye on it for now. Still makes me excited though whenever new updates get added!
All these games have one single formula. First you start with doing everything on your own. Then they allow you to do some automation to make your life easier so that you can start exploring the map and find something more interesting to do. However, none of these game give you an end game or a deadline to finish anything. These games only become challenging only if you impose some deadlines or goals on yourself. This is what I would call lazy development. The developers actually do not know the true nature and limit of their games. So, they keep updating their games to make their players less bored and keep them coming back and continue playing. Stardew Valley is exactly the same.
I've had this game in Early Acess for about 2 years already I think, I've had it since it was a single man project and I honestly think it's got a much more engageing gameplay loop than stardew valley, I think once everything gets added (Which I actually believe will happen since the devs are constantly updating the game in a timely manner, another update has come out even since this video) I think this game will be much better than stardew valley
@@TrueRandomization The end game as of now is probably maxing out your tavern and rental rooms beauty and reputation, having all employee types, getting all recipes for brews and cooking and having a full self sufficient farm. I enjoy it because the management sim part of running the tavern is very fast paced active playing, while the days you decide to prep and build and decorate the tavern can be very slow paced and planning focused. The game just has a good balance imo. If you've just watched the video they've had 2 big updates since what you can see in it that change how you collect recipes and have added a ton more. So endgame is still similar but the process is more fleshed out. I like it more than stardew valley and its probably only 50-70% finished.
The goal of these types of games isn't really to be challenging, nor to have an end game. The fact that it doesn't have deadlines, or mechanics that makes the player move at a specific pace is because it's meant to be a casual, cozy experience for people to relax. Some challenge would indeed be nice, but making it optional and not part of the core experience as to not alienate the game's main audience would be the right way to go imo.

Glad the video helped! I think cozy games like this are perfect for the Steam Deck. Reminds me of Harvest Moon back in the PSP era.

Not sure if this game's coming out for mobile, I'd have to check but I'd say it'd be a great idea for them just like it was for Stardew Valley.
Can you romance other characters??
Wtf man am I missing something? Where are your kegs?!! I only just started the game, are they a recent addition?
Is this by the same people that made PonyTown? It uses the exact same textures and objects.
i feel like they could have done better for the fishing mechanics.
wow this is a great video

Cleaning the floor and tables was not fun or gratifying. It really shouldn't be part of the game or at least it needs to change how often it happens.
I didn't find it to be much of a hassle after the early game but I get why it would be a turn off.
I'll never understand why people call Autumn, "Fall"....
Shaka when the walls fell. Because leaves fall off of the trees. It's also called Harvest.
