Heck yes! Quality, experienced player on a cheap would be a win for us. He's definitely a leader at La Real with a cult following but for Arsenal, should we sign him, I feel like he'll flourish more with being free from the spotlight and attention he got in Spain, if that makes sense. I think a quality player like him gives Mikel a bit more breathing room for tweaks in tactics or rotation. Also, it gives Merino a chance to grow into the CM that we desperately need. Xhaka-esque. Someone who flies under the radar, gets his head down and puts in the work.

Great analysis in the podcast. Really enjoying it Our midfield situation needs to be addressed immediately. Last season we only fixed the LCM issue after the Dubai trip and the rest is history I am hoping we get a Zubimendi or Merino. Then we can integrate them in pre-season
I just don’t have a good feeling about this Arsenal transfer window. I feel like we’re leaving ourself short again by being so frugal with money rather than going all out to close the gap to city. The way we sell and buy is now getting to my nerve. We all know we need a top class no.9 and no.8 to win the league, but I just don’t think we do that this summer, and thats worrying.

You guys need to understand. Martinelli was not at his best because our 8 weren’t progresses like Xhaka, Merino is the cheapest out of the Xhaka category. So in my opinion we should go all in for Bruno G who surpasses him with creativity and defending.
Elliot is spot on with Merino. I cant see him playing as a nr6, and I don't really want Rice playing at the base of our midfield being the main progressive outlet from deep, so unless Merino is the Rice back up in the left 8 then I don't really understand the deal. However, more than happy to sign him for £20m as a Sambi replacement
I agree with Elliot. He is a floor raiser, squad top player aka Trossard, Jorginho type a transfer to help fixing left 8. Even if Merino would come, Arsenal still need top 6-8 player a level raiser.
@35.28 So true. People act like Partey being fit would solve all our problems, but when he returned from injury it didn't significantly change our level. Jorginho is underrated and a brilliant ball progresser and calming presence in the 6, he's brilliant in helping control games, but he can't be playing 90 minutes at his age/physicality. Regardless I'm happy to start jorginho as long as we can sub him out for a partey-level player, or vice versa (starting a partey-level player and subbing on jorginho to gain control)
It did massively though I have to accept we were vulnerable defensively. But in terms of progressions,being on the front foot and creating chances again and again that increased and helped us in those last few games. He relieves Odegaard from dropping too deep to pick balls n help moving up the field.

We played the whole season without #8 position, and affected #11, so we need a competent player in that position and out attack and middle will improve.
I believe Merino will be our replacement for Partey. Whether he is the right man or not, Arteta and Edu see him as the midfielder who can fill that role. I've watched him since his days at Newcastle and also while he was at Real Sociedad. He is the Xhaka replacement we need. I don't think many have seen him play, but when it comes to the attacking phase, his decision-making is far better than Xhaka's or Declan Rice's. I wouldn't want Arsenal fans to be upset if he's the only midfielder we bring in. I honestly believe he's capable of starting for us this season.

From what you guys saw last season from Rice, you all still don't think he's great in the no8 position? I think what will need is a Partey replacement. Rice enjoyed playing in the no8 role last season, and he showed all the important qualities to excel in that position even despite not being a very technical player. His ability to carry the ball through long stretches of the pitch was very good and he later got better at making those smart runs into the final third and was able to score 8 goals and 6 assists in his first try in that position. I reckon he will even get a lot better at it if he plays there more. We already have a competent no8 who could get even better the more he plays in that position. So what we need is a deep lying playmaker or primary progressor as Elliot said, a Partey replacement or a more physical Jorghino. Why are a lot of our fans not seeing this?

Mikel will protect these players, I don’t expect to see any of them till early/mid September. Think the club does very well in protecting our players.
