This was the most informative pochade box review I've seen - in over 2 hours of watching and reading reviews! I am an oil painter, but I have dabbled in watercolor. Watching you painting was icing on the cake. So beautiful! I sat, mouth agape, the whole time you were painting. Such an inspiration!
Nice introduction of your new pochade box. The frosting on the cake is your marvelous artistry with WATERCOLORS. You are truly an inspiration to us beginners.
Thanks so much. Just purchased the 9 x 12 box with a few extras. Haven't painted in 9 yrs. But going to RV soon full time (retiring) and will do pastels and acrylics. Looking forward to painting again. This was helpful in my decision od using a pochade box. Thanks!
I love your channel Steve! I find your sense of humor enjoyable and your passion for sharing knowledge is admirable. Just know you are appreciated. Bless you and your family.
Hi! I'm trying to teach myself watercolors and I wanted to let you know that out of the hundreds of tutorials I watch, you are one of my favorite artists! Your videos are fun and so informative! Love your work!!
Thanks for the video! I have been debating buying a pochade box. I currently have a set up using a board and some clips, but it is not always the best to keep everything organized while painting. This one looks like it will be perfect for plein aire work. Appreciate how thorough your supply lists are, as well as the links to the materials you use. Psalms 9:1 is a great reminder for us to pause and thank our God for the talents and the blessings He has given us!
After adding this to my wish list..my wife purchased this pochade box for me for Christmas. I am anxious to try it out. I am revisiting your review to see if there are any of the assessories that I need to purchase. Thanks again for your thorough review.
Great review, and demo. Just wanted to second your recommendations. I've used this box for watercolour for many years and love it. It's easy to use without a tripod too, as a lap box. For winter sketchers, it's great to use inside a car just sitting on your lap. I bought the 'slip in easel', but don't use it anymore, as I find it quite heavy. It isn't necessary - I just lean my sketchbook against the back, rather than insert it, so I can still paint any size I want. The Thumb Boxes are light weight, yet very rugged. Highly recommended.
Very VERY helpful. In my Mom's art hoard is a Guerrilla box I didn't even know what it was until RUclips. But my Mom did oil and acrylics, I dabble in watercolor, more to be different. I couldn't figure the best way to adapt the box to watercolor, so this was very helpful. I love your landscape too. I also have a French easel, evidently Guerilla wasn't big enough.
Great intro to the product and I can really see how to use it now instead of a dry advertisement. Love the personality and smiles that you put into your work. Great job. And talk about the timing, I just got my travel rigger from R&C yesterday and was so pleased to see one in action this morning.
The thumb box is my art studio both at home and in the car. It is a terrific option if you don't have much space. Thank you for the review and lovely painting.
Brilliant bit of kit, I'm still miles too shy to do it in public. Great painting. I had to rewind, it had a moment when it went from a collection of colour to a setting. Skill I live in hope. Thanks Steve.
Steve, that was beautiful! That little kit looks like it might be useful. I loved your choice of colors for the fall landscape with the trees. Thanks so much!
I just got mine in from Wet Paint today. So cute, and I have to get the pocket box as well. I had to do a little research to find how to attach the extension. I'm going to ask Kate about all the other things to add. omg. Thanks for showing me again
I have the exact same box that I have used for my plein air oils. Now that I'm starting painting with watercolors I will give it a try. However the watercolor palette is nearly impossible to purchase here in Europe
An interesting setup, for now I'm totally guerrilla-ing it by using a small palette and paper block on my lap (: I plan on building a similar setup soon, so this is really helpful, thank you! P.S. beautiful composition on the painting (: - Liron
Great review of the whole pochade box but my fave bit was when you laid down the first washes with that big wide brush :D I have to do that to get more expressive!!
I am very inspired when I stumbled across to your channel as not many Watercolor artist paint scenery! I'm just starting water colour and found your tutorials are amazing thanks! Any other tips for watercolour?
Nice little painting box....I was expecting something that looked more like a monkey. ;) I really like the way you can paint in a loose fluid style, and detailed painting almost like a photograph. I'm still working on which end of the brush to dip in the paint. Also love the Scripture at the end.
This is great. I paint indoors but I am now considering going outdoor because your setup looks so interesting. I saw you using the Escoda Versatil brush. I am trying to choose between the Escoda and Black Velvet travel brushes.Could you please do a comparison/ review?
They are comparable in quality. The BVs hold more water but are limper due to the squirrel blend. For more snap the Versatile is a very nice synthetic. Love em both.
I have one of these and have several reservations about recommending it. I took it to France for a week of plein aire painting and had lots of problems. I had added the shelf that flips out to the right, which gave me more work space--but I am left-handed and would have like to have had that space on the left side, rather than the right. Not adaptable as sold. I also found the size quite limiting in terms of media. If you want to work larger than 6x8, you have to find a way to hold your block of watercolor paper onto the lid--which is your backboard. I tried clamps, which Guerrilla sells--but it is hard to work with blocks of paper. Individual sheets or board would be better, as discussed in the video. The biggest problem, though, is something that I consider a serious design flaw. The hinge that holds up the lid slips--I found myself constantly having to tighten the knob, and I also had to tighten the hex bolt on the box end of the hinge (hard to do in the field and a real pain!). I don't know whether this is a problem with my particular box, or if it is a manufacturing issue, but I wouldn't buy this box again because of it. I ultimately solved my media problem by opening the box to flat and taping my block of watercolor paper to the sides. But the faulty hinge is an issue that is not easily solved--and when painting in the field, where timing and light are important, you don't want to be constantly having to stop and readjust. Sorry Guerrilla, I can't recommend this thumb box as it stands.
Agreed, this pochade doesn't work with blocks. Its designed to be used with panels. If I were painting on a block I would just use my plein air easel but I like the box for being able to take 300lb panels or watercolor board into the field. I've not had a problem with the knob or the hex bolt slipping.
@@mindofwatercolor Hi. Very helpful video. Thanks. I mainly paint with oils, but I might use it for watercolor too. What do you mean by 300lb panels? And what is it like to paint on them and watercolor board, which I have never heard of. I just use Arches watercolor block.
Years ago I had one of these when I lived in Colorado. I didn't like it for acrylics, but it was great for oils. It got lost in Kansas though out of the back of my pick up truck, traveling across country. I am looking for something besides my Moleskin bag to take my watercolors out into the field with and thought of getting another thumb box, but the etcher mini slate or art satchel seems real nice to me. Since you have all three which would you recommend? I do not trvel that much due to health issues, but I want something that hooks to a tripod. That I can take in back yard, or trips to the park, but also for painting in different rooms in the house since I no longer have a studio. Thanks.
@@mindofwatercolor I try to keep t pretty simple. A small travel paint kit, 4 water brushes, two sable brushes, a couple cloths, mechanical pencil, fountain pen, small utility knife, these wonderful mtac collapsible coffee cups to hold water, the have a handle that is great for holding paint brushes, and two small watercolor journals
Loved your choose of background music, always want to hear new. Could you share? Great painting! It's always so dry and windy where I live I can't seem to keep everything wet enough to use outdoors. Any suggestions?
I saw in a plein air video you made at the beginning of 2021 that you don’t use this box anymore. Is that the case? Do you use your homemade board instead?
I still use the Guerrilla Painter box on occasion. Doesn't work as well for sketchbooks which tends to be the majority of my plein air work. I still like the box quite a lot for painting on panels. Thought about getting that box out just recently as a matter of fact.
@@mindofwatercolor I’ve seen other RUclipsrs use sketchbooks with the guerilla thumbox after applying a copious amount of large clamps to keep them open and in place. Maybe that might be an option? Or maybe getting that accessory that slides into the panel holder which lifts the space for the painting surface up and out of the lid? I’m still waiting until some accessories are back in stock and then I think I’ll order one and see if I can use it with sketchbooks too.
Great video. Thanks. The place I live one cannot paint for 5 minutes in the open till you are surrounded by a crowd of curious observers who don't mind asking questions and disturbing the flow. Have you faced such situations and what is the best way to handle them?
Not really, most people don't bother me. Sometimes I get an onlooker with a comment or two but rarely. I don't usually paint or draw in crowded locations.
Great very thorough review. I have a question about squirrel mop brushes...Do you like a particular brand? I am thinking maybe size 8-12...synthetic or real hair? Thanks very much...
Thanks! I have a couple Princeton Neptune quills and I like those. They are synthetic squirrel. I also like the Jerry's Artarama Danubes, also synthetic. The only real squirrel I have is a DaVinci. Its very nice too but not really seeing much difference between it and the synthetics. I tend to use the smaller mops. The larger ones just hold a ton more water than I need. Good if you paint pretty big.
Hi Steve! Great review as always, thank you for sharing. If you were to choose one between the Guerilla Painter Pochade box and the Etchr Art Satchel, what would you prefer more?
+Jacqueline Mendoza I like them both for different reasons. The Satchel is great for painting with journals and sketchbooks and carrying a variety of stuff for all kinds of sketching. The pochade is nice just for painting panels for more complete paintings. Smaller and lighter when you don’ tneed to carry all that other stuff.
Love them warm autumn colors. The stand won't work for me. I am more a plain air picture taker & paint indoor. Knowing myself I'll probably knock anything over, haha.

A Rosemary and Co. Rigger. There should be a link in the video description.
That peg on the far end of your work area extension... it's that for hanging your wash bucket?
No, it's a spacer. If this were used for oils the palette would probably be stored open and sit underneath the extension after it folds in.
