That's Paul on bass guitar doing those octaves with the slides up into them but he's also doing really quick finger work between the octaves, he was such an instinctive bass player, even though he started off playing guitar.
This was a single and never released on an album at the time. The flip side was Paperback Writer. The Beatles had quit touring and wanted to stretch their technical abilities in the studio with the help of their ace producer George Martin. Another great Beatles song! ❤
😄Apparently, John mistakenly listened to the tape of this song backwards. He loved the way it sounded so much that he wanted to release the entire song played in reverse. He settled for just the little bit at the end!
George Martin said that when they decided to have him produce their records the one thing they wanted was for all their recordings to sound like nothing they'd done before
Rain came out when I was home with the Mumps or Measles n my sister had the single 45 (among others), it’s been a favorite since then. Even then, I loved the sound n could even understand the message. End of their first era, transitioning toward Pepper. A Lennon home run!
Think of the lyrics here, as a kind of psychedelic manifesto, “Can you hear me/That when it rains and shines/It’s just a state of mind.” Subjective reality trumps objective reality…”
Oh man their lyrics function on so many levels, there's no need to take things at face value although it's helpful to do it on all levels of course. Nice Kendrick Lamar reference. 👌
The Beatles loved to write nonsense lyrics, leaving the listener scratching their head, trying to make sense of it (I Am The Walrus, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Why Don't We Do It In The Road). On the other hand, they also sometimes wrote very profound, meaningful lyrics (Dear Prudence, Across The Universe, Eleanor Rigby, Something). Honestly, back in the day, lyrics were rarely available to be studied. What you could make out on the radio was what you went with, as far as lyrics went, and it was often wrong. Most albums didn't even include lyrics in their packaging. I guess what I'm getting at is, song reactors, today, get far more out of the lyrics than we ever really had the chance to, when these songs were contemporary. Because, we had no internet, no computers. The best chance we had to find lyrics was at a public library, if the vinyl LP album didn't include them in the packaging.
John is singing a song he wrote. If you’re going to react to geniuses like The Beatles and Bob Dylan, you’re going to have to stop trying to figure out what “it means”. Sometimes it’s just free form poetry. I guess that’s become a lost art among today’s recordings “artists”

To me, for the time, this was just a masterful blend of playing with harmony and texture, and then the words are just so simple but evocative.

Wow the Beatles don't disappoint.

I love Pauls bass playing in this song
Somehow, back to back with Paperback Writer, Rain, somehow they took incredible strides forward.
Life is what you make of it

Ringo rocks!
Usually whoever wrote the song sings it, unless it was written for George or. Rings.
Try reacting to Across the Universe and Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.
It's about non=duality
This is where Oasis started!
drugs were illegal and to say the song was about drugs at that time it would have been banned
