I actually loved the anthology episodes , it was refreshing to see something else going on in the world of Atlanta and didn't make watching the main group any less important, while also giving us a break from the same old Schtick
I've definitely come around to enjoying those episodes now, but at the time, I and a lot of other peoppe just wanted more of the main characters story. The anthology episodes felt like an unwanted dsitraction.
I stand by Van’s trip away, dropping her kid with her mom. If she can feel she’s crumbling, and can’t seem to catch her breath or footing, it makes sense for her to step back a moment. Being a mom is hard, especially when they’re co-parenting. It’s not as simple as “be a better mom.” A good mom has the awareness that she needs a break, and a lucky mom will have the means to take one.
Everything you said is true, and I completely understand that patenting can bring a lot of stress, but where Van crosses the line into being a deadbeat for me, is when she leaves on her trip and then basically starts a new life with no plan to ever see lottie again. That's not being a responsible parent, that's straight neglect and abandonment
@@chillreview636I kinda saw the episode as inevitable. Like her masquerade was gonna break at some point. Her friends from Atlanta was just the call she needed but I feel like she was always haunted by Lottie’s presence. It makes this break all the more necessary for me because it teaches Van how to separate her individuality from her mother hood. I think it’s super important later on for her to define her individuality(even if it is ugly or traditional) because she has that whole conversation in season 4 with Earn about her individuality when he asks her and Van to move to Cali. I love this review. Love this show.
@@chillreview636but you never critiqued earns decision to leave his family to pursue being PaperBoi’s manager, which in full reality, would be a fairy tale and pipe dream in the real world. Ok
@@CrownMeBrie I critiqued Earn's decision to try to be a manager in my season 1 video. That was back when it wasn't paying off. By S3, Earn is providing a life for his daughter by being Al's manager. He's going overseas for work, which is something a lot parents have to do
BTW the white guy from the end of the big pay back episode is the same guy from the beginning of the first episode of the season at the lake. When he offs himself at the end of the big pay back episode shows how he became a ghost, which is why he reappears at lake lanier at the beginning of the season
Great overall review as usual, but I do gotta disagree with the take about Van at the end. Not necessarily the direction they were taking her character or even the episode itself (which I won’t claim I loved that they ended the season that way), but more so that I think her having an existential crisis makes a lot of sense for her character at this point and I don’t think it can be dismissed outright as just her being a bad parent. Van clearly felt pretty unfulfilled in her life as far back as in season 1. It’s why she’s unhappy that she’s busting her ass trying to feed her daughter while her old friend lives an exciting life childless just by sleeping with rich men. It’s why she goes to Drake’s party looking for a clout-boosting picture for her uninteresting social media (though obv to her credit she forgets about it once she sees it’s worthless). She very much loves her daughter, but she clearly didn’t get to the position she wanted to in life before she, let’s face it, probably had her unplanned, and as much as a good head she has on her shoulders, the depression from that can only be repressed for so long before you need to get at peace with it. She didn’t to that, and she nearly took her own life as a result, and the DEEP shame she felt from it was so strong she impulsively left the country. Now obviously that’s a total extreme that’s unacceptable in real life and probably only happened because, well, this is Atlanta. But I think it goes a lot deeper than her being a selfish bad parent. Even if I don’t love the episode, to me, everything I’ve seen from her before this point does make it pretty logical that this would be her state of mind now. Sorry if long-winded lol again great retrospective like I said
Yea this is a great break down.Van I feel is not a bad written character she just doesn’t have that much screen time. Which in the end can lead to her getting dismissed a lot of the time.which also leads to her being put in the category of “Earns baby momma” which I believe she’s probably said at one point in the show. I love van.I love all her episodes. She just needed more time on screen and ik for a fact she wouldn’t need the other main characters cause she can carry by herself. There needs to be a bit more grace and understanding when it comes to her character.
No need to apologize. I love reading well thought out comments. Especially when they offer a different perspective like yours. I definitely understand the reasons for Vann's mental breakdown, and I sympathize with the existential crisis she went through. I just hate the way it was depicted. I would argue most parents (especially unplanned parents) go through what Van went through, but it's hard to respect somebody who completley abandons their child for any reason, let alone when the reason is as goofy as hers. I think I would have disliked the episode even if Van didn't abandon Lottie, but I at least would have still respected and liked Van as a person if the writers at least made her take Lottie with her to live out her crazy French girl fantasy together
I was about to say! I dug that episode and like the nuance of it. I don't think Van's arc can be so easily summed up as 'Van is a bad parent' she felt very human and relatable to me. I took it less so as her feeling at odds with being a parent and more like she was at odds with not knowing who she is as a person. Her aimlessness feels evocative of the season's wildness.
I really appreciate the season 3 finale depiction of Van’s story arc. Even though Donald Glover gets a lot of hate for how he writes black women, I really appreciate his existential crisis portrayal. You can see it building it up even from Season 1. It really took a sharp turn when she lost her job because she admitted to smoking weed to her superior. And the circumstances of jumping through the hoops to prevent that from happening all stemmed from spending time with one of her clout-chasing escort friend’s who basically pitted her life (or lack thereof) Sure, the episode had some very surreal chaotic moments, but that’s exactly what deteriorating mental health can do to someone. Also, she experienced a very traumatic situated watching “Tupac” die through the hands of a cult. Between that and seeing Earn thrive with something he worked so hard for when she was supporting his ass for lord knows how long probably brought up some feelings of purpose, apathetic, despair and anger. Hence Amelie.
Atlanta’s ‘Rich Wigga, Poor Wigga’ from Season 3 is a perfect example of how life imitates art, especially in light of the 2024 election and Kamala Harris’s portrayal in the media. Just like Aaron in the episode, Harris faced a public demand to ‘prove’ her Blackness. Both Aaron and Harris have Black fathers but are partnered with white people-Aaron’s girlfriend is white, and Harris’s husband is white. This parallel highlights society’s fixation on questioning identity based on superficial markers, especially when someone’s ‘blackness’ is deemed ambiguous. In ‘Rich Wigga, Poor Wigga,’ Aaron’s chance at a scholarship hinges on his ability to ‘prove’ his Blackness, a test he’s set up to fail by a panel that never saw him as ‘Black enough.’ Similarly, during the election, Harris was frequently questioned and ridiculed for her racial identity. The episode also includes a scene where an African student, who’s denied a Black scholarship, is shot in what’s labeled as the ‘blackest thing you can do.’ This mirrors Trump’s incident of being shot during his campaign and people joking that between that and his felonies he's the blackest president we've had, drawing a dark, satirical line between violence and perceived authenticity in racial and cultural identity. Atlanta’s predictions about race, identity, and politics feel prophetic, much like The Boondocks in its prime. This episode, especially, feels like a surreal commentary on today’s political landscape.
That's a really good point. Still blows my mind people were stupid enough to claim Kamala wasn't black, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised by things like that anymore.
@@chillreview636 It reminds that theres people legit think shes a marxist or communist (even though her campaign was starting to lean center right) just because trump said so. 😭
Im glad they went so outta left field with s3 because it made s4 feel like a fresh welcome back to Atlanta. Donald bringing earl in for the doom homage was a highlight for s4
Ngl I love this season 😂 I love the one off episodes that have nothing to do with the main cast ….but I understand how it would be off-putting to some fans .
You did your thing. 😢 I cried REAL TEARS when Darius rescued them from the Black Sushi 🍣 restaurant. I didnt want it to be over. And they were laughing in slow motion. Didnt know what to expect when I saw it announced. But as a former resident of Fulton County and Gwinnett County....and a Clark-Atlanta University alumni, FX Atlanta is the best television series I have (ever) seen.
I think Lorraine being trans and taking Al to the cancel club is also a reference to the episode "B.A.N." from season 1, where he was being cancelled due to his comments about the trans community. Although I do like the perspective about his mom and her having to take both roles as single mother.
the old man and the tree and new jazz are my favorite episodes of the season. fernando's conversation with al during poker was so striking, and the ghost story he tells before that. this season especially has the motif of ghosts/spirits that i like. it supports their exploration of racism but also stands by itself as a way to explore (primarily alfred) a character's emotional and mental state. the opening scene on the lake in three slaps. fernando's ghost story. the apparent spirit of sylvia following the family. the man who writes the song for al and somehow knows things about him no one else does (i read him as a spirit guide though a real person), the spirit guide, lorraine, in al's drug trip that is some representation of his late mother. i love how they're depicted as these eerie reminders of our history in a collective and personal sense. the actions of people have rippling effects no matter if they're dead or alive. and often those rippling effects stay long, long after they're gone
Damn that's really interesting analysis. I never even considered the overarching theme of spirits and our pasts and how that might connect to past of racial trauma that haunts people of color. Really great comment 👍
I loved when they showed us that white women gentrify the Nigerian restaurant it showed what is happening in London right now lots of people are getting brought out and losing their livelihood.
That dude's name is also Earn Marks and his luggage was mistakenly sent to Earn after he unalived himself. His picture might be why Earn dreamt of him.
I've been watching your reviews for a while now and every time I see a new upload I always know I'm in for something great regardless of the subject matter. Keep going bro, you're providing quality content🤝
I really hate that first episode for the fact his parents definitely did suck and where abusive and it ends with the kid being in the wrong and taught a lesson by being put with even more abusive people
The message is about a flawed system and how a child can easily become lost in it. It’s about how liberals put up a front of wanting to help, when in reality they are looking to do harm. It’s about how children in those systems can easily become invisible.
Looking forward to watching this video. Excited for your take on episode 5, specifically the song played for Alfred. One of the most striking moments of pathos in the show.
Great video but you attributed a couple episodes to the UK when they are based elsewhere in Europe. New Jazz is defintely based in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Cancer Attack is based in Budapest (Hungary), that's why they have accents.
Good catch. I'm admittedly not well versed on European geography. If a place is anywhere near London and the people speak English, I just assume it's the UK lol
9:13-9:30 The beautiful thing about this ‘from the headlines’ moment is The original dancing boy went to a school where they encouraged dancing. The whole room of kids were goin ham….. and then they went to see Black Panther. 😀 🚶🏿♂️
I remember hearing about the real life story behind Loquareeous as it unfolded in real time on tumblr. First when the photo with the officer surfaced, then later after the tragic events transpired. Truly terrible and heartbreaking.
I was really surprised with your intial takes on the anthology episodes and final take on the Van Episodes. I loved the anthology episodes because Atlanta always had this way of taking familiar concepts and mixing it with unique experiences that come with being black in America AND poor in America in more imaginative and surreal ways. Season 1 and 2 were hilarious and had this element of shock but season 3 especially after the wait had these big elements of surprise and horror (which I love horror) but really speaking on the trauma effects of it all. So I was upset at the fact that we were getting less of the main cast these episodes were truly such amazing conversations with friends and family which was always my reason for loving Atlanta. Now for that Van episode all of my friends and I LOVED IT. And as I unfortunately am surrounded by more mothers in Vans situation that loss of individuality all to completely embody this supposed look of motherhood and parenting mostly alone is indeed incredibly taxing. I’ve found these women and men in these situations have tendencies to snowball and intellectualize a lot of what they’re feeling due to not having a lot of present support or ears to listen. Of course Earn is making money now but it’s still incredibly apparent he’s not there with and for his daughter’s development and is putting mainly all on Van. I’m a firm believer in it takes a village to raise a child and It’s amazing Van had family support to watch lottie while she finds herself and shows that Van was planning to obviously come back to lottie. But nothing reminds you of who you are or WERE by those you were hanging around so her friend noticing her and taking time to check in even tho it was just a run in 🧑🏾🍳💋. The episode hilarious, ridiculous, and amazing display of female rage she is a person first and a mother second. It capped off the season with a return to self, return to familiarity, return to ATLANTA! (And a little bit of water sports Donald has been interesting when it comes to specific works like that 😂). Still enjoyed the watch always such high quality edits.
Like I said in the video, I have come around to liking pretty much all of the anthology episodes. I think at the time S3 aired, I was juat so disappointed from not seeing the main cast as much after 3 and half years of wating, and some of the episodes we did get with main cast weren't my favorites. But I'll never deny the genuis of most of S3's writing. But about that Van episode.... I gotta hard disagree with you 😅. I actually had the exact opposite experience with my friends. Everyone I've watched that episode with has agreed that it makes Van look like a horrible mother. My girlfriend just watched it the other day for the 1st time and couldn't believe she would abandon Lottie like that. I don't want to make it seem like I'm ignorant or apathetic to the plight of mothers (single or otherwise) because they obviously go through a lot, but I just didn't like the way it was depicted by the writers. I get what the writers were trying to go for, but it felt a little too over top and ridiculous. And she 1000% was not going to bring Lottie over to Europe with her. You can tell, because she doesn't snap out if her mental Delusion until her friend asks her how Lottie fits into her new life. It would also be incredibly irresponsible and dangerous to bring a child into all the crazy stuff Van was into while in Paris. But our differing views about the finale and Van aside - I do appreciate you watching, and your comment was very insightful.
*insert this is a sick negro meme* 😂 Nah but honestly, I can rock with that. It's not very high in my list, but I do think it's a very creative episode and there's some great moments/messages
Atlanta is a perfect show, and with season 3 I believe is necessary to have occurred the way it did in order to show that the Atlanta they were in during seasons 1 and 2 could be an idea or state of mind that doesn't leave one just because they leave that area. Or as Mos Def says, "Regardless of where home is, son home is mine."
Great video, just like the previous ones in that series. Some of the takes here really provoked me to think about season 3 again, and let me look from a diffrent perspective. A small trivia: I think that Ep.5 took place in Budapest, Hungary, since some of the signs around the venue are in Hungarian, and I think someone during the episode mentions that.
@@chillreview636too bad they didn't do "FX presents....LA". I made a video predicting that Donald Glover was going to spin this off to California where the new job was. I went to college in Atlanta. It IS NOT that wacky of a place.....Los Angeles though? Boy they coulda got weird! 😂
@@chillreview636 We need more bro like Atlanta will never get old. I hope somewhere down the line Donald brings it back including the whole cast even Teddy Perkins (character) bro.
I agree that the joke of the episode is definitely that, and it works as a joke. When it became a sad story about Van abandoning her child to live out that lifestyle, that's where I started to dislike it and Van as a character
Cancer attack is my fav episode in the whole series. I feel like it has everything I love about the show. The comedy, weirdness, the openness of Al, and most importantly, the song by Wylie. Perfect episode!
Trini 2 tha bone is my favorite episode of this season however Wiley’s song scene with Alfred is my all time fave it’s so vulnerable and heart-wrenching. This season left the most impact on me and I’m excited to revisit it.
you should review the chi. the first two seasons are amazing although i think it starts to fall off for me around season 3 you may or may not like it but i think the first two season are worth reviewing it touches on a lot of social, and economical issues through the point of view of mutiple characters
Personally, I never considered or cared about a Clark County follow up. I thought it was over. Its eat or be eaten and the lesson was over. Did we really need a reveal and conflict over that situation?? This is the only part I disagree with, but its strange that I cared so little, but it was so significant to the creator.
I care about Earn Al and Darius and I care about their stories. The show made it seem like the Clark County situation was going to affect Earn, Al, & Darius while in Europe. The same way I was invested when it looked like Al was going to fire Earn, or when Tracy Beat Earn's ass or when Darius Van got fired from her teaching job. I feel like it's kinda of natural to get attached to characters in a good show and care about what may ir may not happen to them
@chillreview636 I watched the s2 video after s3 and it made more sense. I never considered Clark County becoming a rival because of the situation. To me, he was a narrative device to showcase how cut throat and ruthless the music industry would be. A brief contrast to Al and Earn's relationship and nothing more.
Based on the direction the writers went, it looks like your assessment was right lol. Idk if it was clear in my video or not, but I definitely was more upset about when the show first aired. I'm much more content with the direction of the show now
@mosdeaf There’s much more you should disagree with, especially when a creator like Chill Review pays respect to anti-black manosphere bro garbage like Kevin Samuels, and that’s just this video dude… He’s said anti-black sh** and been a racist cop apologist in his other black media videos. Do you really want to trust a guy doing stuff like that to review black media honestly? I wouldn’t as a black man myself…
I love your video essays! I just want to say; a lot of this show you don’t understand if you don’t have much active or passive experience with the material portrayed. I honestly think that could be why the Van episodes don’t really mean much to you, or have the least impact. Especially the finale episode. I think that episode was meant for a certain audience to be seen heard and understood.
I really do feel like your reaction to the episode is the reason it exists. I think it’s really saying a lot. In a season where the main four characters are essentially finding out more about their black identity through newfound experiences to transcend it Van’s story is the main one of the season. Amelie is a film about a white woman in Europe who can live in a world of her own making. Toni Morrison has a quote that if she didn’t make her own world she would die in this one. It’s not so directly about the realities of parenting than the sometimes oppressive view the world casts on black women and the denial of their own determinations 47:18
I understand what you and the show were trying to say. I don't have a problem with Van attempting to make her own world. My issue is that Van made a world that didn't include her daughter. I can't sympathize or reconcile with that. If the writers had changed that detail and gave Van some tangible plan to still raise Lottie, then I wouldn't hate the episode at all
My theory is the song Wiley sings is actually Paper Boy’s song. He knew his phone number and so much that Al was dealing with. I think that’s why Al has such a strong reaction to it and lets him go as well
The Dutch episode was stuff of genius level comedy, them going around and seeing people in black face saint was cringey and funny all at the same time. Especially when Paper Boi goes to perform and sees the whole crowd in black face, I had to rewatch that a few times 😂
I gotta say, you got a point with Will Smith transcending race with his popularity, but from what i was seeing, that all started to change when he did the slap. Before then, people didn't really factor his race into the equation but after the oscars, people (some from my family too) were saying stuff like 'oh he's fueling the angry black man stereotype' etc. It was him acting aggressive in that moment that brought race in the discussion with Will Smith, and ergo anytime any moments of aggression in general will bring up the race factor in news and online discussions. Im guessing because it's conditioned within us to believe over the years that race and aggressive behavior go hand in hand
favorite season by a mile i have a deep appreciation for the anthology episodes and how they expand black stories as a whole. if the creator of the show knows it only takes a certain amount of episodes to tell the story he wants to tell i think it’s a plus that we get these extra bits of world building. and they’re great stand alone stories to show my friends who’ve never seen any of the show. love your work, been waiting for this one to drop 🧞
Every time you drop a season review, it forces me to watch the next season. Gotta finish season 4 before you drop bro🔥 About "Earn" not sure if that's how its spelt: As you said S3 is not about what's right or fair it's about shifting the balance of power. Besides, what he did was neither bad nor good. He had three choices (expose, keep quite, indorse), two of which led to the same thing. If he chooses to expose, 1 gains and the other losses which is the same with every choice. I say it's not his fault for being wiser it's just life.
That..... is actually a really good way of looking at it. It's not really his fault if the music exec was stupid enough to support the kid, and it is what he wanted to do anyway. Earn picked the option that technically benefitted everyone. It still feels shady though lol
@ oddly kinda sad that I finished it, I had such a good time watching it but I'm satisfied. I loved the open-ended ending even though I'm still kinda mad they killed off Clark County off-screen
As a white boy from the hood ive never been looked at differently cuz we all struggling but i always felt judged by white people in the suburbs it’s mostly about ya class not race but race is like a add on for people to separate themselves to feel better
The last episode explains the whole season Black ppl wanting to be white for success or forced to be white to be successful … Van breaks down cause she is the last one that joins in on it but it doesn’t work and it breaks her it’s like all the characters inside of her say “I just want to get away with life like white ppl” lol and the real question is do they … I want to hear more from white ppl about Atlanta especially season 3
Example: her pushing everyone throughout the season and acting out to me is her denying the new whiteness they have… and the reason why she is last cause she is the last to reap the benefits don’t forget Glover wakes up with a women that’s why he has those dreams he is sick of his action and turning white
Yeah I can kinda see that, but I still think the issue is that Earn and Al were doing "white" things for a career while Van was actually trying to create a conpletely new "white" life. She took things waaaaay too far, and my opinion It was past what even white people can typically get away with. But like you said it would be better to hear from actual white people about it.
It's completely unfair to have smoke for Van. The guys complain about their lives all the time. Also let's not forget that Urn is also Lottie's parent and his ass was on that European tour as well. No one ever said, hey Urn is it cool to he away from your daughter that long overseas??? I'm not a super fan of the finale episode either but that's just because Donald Glover doesn't know what to do with black women characters. Example, the mom from the 3 slaps episode and Lorraine.
I'm kinda surprised to see so much push back on the whole Van being a bad parent thing. I'm not saying Earn is a perfect parent by any stretch, but Earn is the one making money for the family. He was overseas for work, because he can't manage and protect from Atlanta. He also left under the assumption that Van was taking care of Lottie while he was gone. Van is the one abandoned Lottie to live a wild life overseas with no real playoff ever seeing Lottie again. That's waaaay worse that Earn leaving for on a work trip for a month or two
I wasn’t disappointed at all about not seeing the Clark county situation play out. Clark County isn’t a main character. That situation was just to show us the Earn had what it takes to do what had to be done. In season 3 we get to see that he and Al have been able to make moved and take big steps in their careers. 14:18
I agree that was one of the main reasons for his character, but for people like myself and lot of other fans, we actually were invested in that story thread outside of just what the character's symbolic purpose might have been. I had a lot of convos with friends during the years between S2 and S3 and we would always speculate about what was gonna happen with that whole situation. To see it not even get acknowledged was pretty disappointing for a lot of us.
Right there with you! Did not even think twice about it. I understand that some people might want to know what happened, but considering the stories we got with s3 & 4, it’s really not that important at all.
I can see your point. But at a point.... it comes off as "fake deep" and trying TOO HARD to be different to not follow up on a major, major moment. This isn't a Shakespeare play. So you don't have to always act like it is.
Yeah I remember seeing that happen in real time. It was Wild! I had a whole 2-3 minute section on Kevin Samuels in the video, but I took it out at the last minute because It felt unnecessary to my main point
I haven’t watched season 3 in a really long time but it’s definitely my least favorite. I get the avant-garde nature of it, but that doesn’t mean I resonated with it that much. However, I respect Glover’s attempt to create something different. There are a few standouts, though. Of which are, PaperBoi’s drug trip AND the final episode. Because the final episode (to me) is what season 3 should’ve been. The gang getting into shit whilst abroad. WITH a strong emotional core anchoring it. Van’s breakdown really helped endear me to the season, though. It was just so…raw. And open. And vulnerable. Atlanta has always been that, but Van given time to shine without her playing off of or interacting with any of the boys really captivated me. I don’t remember how long Van was gone for. Idk if it was a couple weeks or a couple of months. It’s not as though, she had been neglecting Lottie the entire show. She’s been consistently there for her. However, parents do fuck up. And who knows how long Van would’ve been out there fucking around if she didn’t encounter her friend to bring her back to reality. Randomly, I might add. She should be held accountable, but I can’t fathom how difficult being a single mother is. We don’t know how present Earn is. He’s consistent but…the nigga was essentially homeless when we first met him. Van’s been WAY more stable for their daughter. Earn’s getting his shit together but that doesn’t entirely make up for how long Van’s been doing it for Lottie. I’m not saying she should be excused but, her snap makes sense.
I definitely get that sentiment about Season 3. It's might be my least favorite season too, but it has definitely grown on me over the years. Regarding Van - it's not that I don't understand why she had a mental breakdown, she was definitely going through a lot of stressful stuff. I just hate the way it was written. They could have kept all her crazy French Shennanigans in the episode but if they made it so that she planned on bringing Lottie overseas with her (which is still an irresponsible ting to do) instead of attempting to abandon her, I would have had much less of a problem with it.
Just finished season 3 in retrospective slash right now time and it’s probably my fav season so far it created deeper thoughts and conversations than its predecessors season 1 or 2 and I should add again I just finished it TODAY thugger
That's whats up. I agree with you about S3 being evoking more thought and conversation, but that ain't the only reason I like the show. S3 is great for what it is and what it tried to do, but I just like direction S1 and S2 went down more
To me, no. Earn left Lottie to provide for her, and he left under the assumption that Van would take care of her while he was gone. I don't think Earn is a perfect parent by any means, but Van legitimately abandoned Lottie with no intention of seeing her again so she could "find herself" in another Continent. Earn isn't guilt free, but what Van did waaaay worse.
Yeah the season finale was definitely a miss, they probably just needed a Vann focused episode since she had very little screen time this season. But other than that, this was an excellent season! Great video as well!
@trebrown8144 It’s funny Chill Review is crying about you being vague, when he himself is vague about his own politics and beliefs. But if you pay attention to what he actually says in his videos, there are cracks in his RUclips persona that reveal where his politics are at. I was watching this season week by week hoping the next episode wasn’t some anthology shit, now Atlanta is my favorite show oat but this is the only season I can say has more than 2 episodes I can say “I don’t feel like watching that” whenever I wanna rewatch something from the season or others... I remember Donald glover saying he wanted season 3 to make people feel like they outgrown Atlanta cause of a story of chief keep leaving Chicago to go record with Kanye in Paris, so I strongly feel the pandemic and Time played a major role in the way this season shaped out and the reason season 4 was the final season, cause in between 2 and 3 all the main cast had grown past the show.
Yeah, season 3 was the only season that took a long time to come out, so I can definitely see that whole "they outgrew the show" thing being true. What were the episodes from season 3 you didn't like?
@@chillreview636”didn’t like” is strong I wouldn’t say there’s episodes I didn’t like, there’s some I didn’t care much for tho The Black reparations episode, Tarrare, white fashion, Trini 2 the bone (I probably gotta rewatch that) & rich wigga poor wigga. I don’t hate the episodes , they aren’t bad. They just aren’t as entertaining as others
3 slaps does not close with earn waking up. It's Donald Glover. Why does nobody get this about this episode. They chose to have him wake up. Not Al, not Darius, not Van, but Donald Glover. They chose to have it be him rather than anyone else waking up because he as the show's creator symbolises the show itself, and the broader creative team. The episode is literally "what if this horrible *real life* tragedy ended in a better way". And now, I think fundamentally atlanta is engaging in the lynchean theme of movies as dreams. The show takes you through what is essentially the writer's fanfiction of how they wish something had gone down irl. It is not Earn who dreams, it is Donald Glover, it is the team behind atlanta, it is us as viewers. I wonder how much the line from twin peaks "we are the dreamers who dream inside a dream" inspired the episode.
Pretty deep....but there is LITERALLY NOTHING YOU CAN POINT TO that shows this was not Earn. Saying that it's Glover is just your interpretation. Nothing greater.
I'm not saying you're wrong because art is up to interpretation, but I will say that there's plently of episodes that show Earn waking up from a dream or Earn talking about a weird dream he had. It's not out of the ordinary for for Earn to dream about that whole episode. Also, the place Earn (or DG if you prefer) wakes in at the end of episode 1 is the same place that Earn Wakes up in at the start of episode 2. There's the white woman next to him in bed and everything. It's a cool theory, but I'm just not sure where anything the show points to that
Van abandoned Lottie, but earn got to live a life outside of the both of them without any push back or questions about his role in Lottie’s life ?… Ok… that’s ridiculous Van even had to take care of Lottie while earn was in college. She never got time for herself. His assessment of Van is ass. Everything else I kind of agree with but I would have to make my own damn video. But it also makes sense about his assessment of women when he called Kevin Samuels a god. Oh brother
Extra. I had a homeboy like this. He got to live a full life outside of being a father, but the minute he THOUGHT his BM on a date he got mad. Nigga you’re out on the town with me!!! Why can’t she be ?? Ridiculous…. Rant over lol
@CrownMeBrie Chill Review is a straight up anti-black c*** on board with misogyny, especially against black women. Don’t you find it curious that he always puts down Van episodes, and then is totally fine with paying respect to thee late right wing freak manosphere bro loser Kevin Samuels who became famous for putting down black women? This anti-black ghoul has also regurgitated anti-black c*** talking points about black people idolizing criminals, has been a racist cop apologist, says race is “kind of” not a social construct, and has misrepresented key messages and takeaways from black media like Atlanta, the Boondocks, etc. Is that the type of RUclipsr you want to support? A goon like Chill Review? I would hope not…
Season 3 honestly turned me off from wanting to even finish watching Atlanta. It gave off very pretentious feeling where they were trying to hard to make a statement about society. There was no real thru lines for the characters in this season and the anthology episodes were a bad idea that totally killed the momentum of the show. Every episode felt disjointed and there didn't seem to even be a point to this season. By far the worst episodes was Trini to the bone & the last episode which felt so pointless in the total context of the show. After watching the interviews with Donald& Steven Glover about season 3 just further proves my point about them just wanting to try to be more provocative that's why they included the likes of Kevin Samuels. It was so bad it killed all desire to even finish the show.
Yeah definitely feel you on that. I encourage you to give S3 another chance because a lot of the episodes grew on me after the fact, but you're definitely not alone in not really liking the direction it went in
@@chillreview636 I will try but the pacing of the episodes and anthology episodes make for an extremely disjointed watching experience and the episode where Van pretends to be French ruined her character for me. I really want to give it another chance when the feelings of disappointment subside. The anthology episodes give off a fake social awareness vibe that doesn't seem to be done with genuine interest in telling those stories.
Yeah I peeped that on my most recent rewatch of the season. Didn't think it was that important mention in the vid, but definitely interesting. I wonder if he was supposed to be in more episodes
One of the episodes takes place in Trinidad though, and there's nothing in those other strange arc episodes that particularly represent Atlanta. They all could have taken place anywhere in America and been the same story
@ My take is people hate Van episodes because people struggle with writing black women well so that it’s digestible for everyone outside of us. I liked her episodes and I understand what they tried to do each time, just poor execution!
To be fair, I do like at least half the Van episodes, and besides the S3 finale, I do like her as a character. But I get what you're saying. Black women being written from a male perspective is always going to be missing certain things that only Black women can bring
@taliataughtyou Why do you think Chill Review is paying respect to the late right wing freak misogynist manosphere loser Kevin Samuels who constantly put down black women? If Chill Review likes to consume misogynist content made by losers like Kevin Samuels, that may explain why he’s more critical towards Atlanta episodes that are more centered on Van. Chill Review’s anti-blackness is sprinkled throughout his black media review videos. All you need to do is look past the black aesthetics of his videos and focus on what he’s actually saying to get what I mean.
Love the vids bro but not everywhere in Europe is in the uk and Europe isn’t a country 🤣🤣🤣🤣 only one of the episodes are in the uk actually im pretty sure, the psychedelic one is in Amsterdam which is in the Netherlands
That's why I put the *COUNTRIES* text on the screen, cuz I realized it sounded like I said Country. But yeah I admittedly don't know what's in the UK and what isn't. I went to London once as a kid and said I'm never coming back 😂😂
I see where you're coming from but I disagree. A European rap tour is no place for a small child. Earn left to go on that trip under the pretense that Van would take care of Lottie while Earn provides for them. Van is the one who betrayed Earn trust and left Lottie with her parents so she could find herself Europe. She's much worse in this situation
@ No I took my son on a tour of France last year. Men have way too many excuses…if you can’t take care of your children then don’t have them…Earn has absolutely nothing to say to Van about their child because he didn’t have a leg to stand on
@@KnowledgeSeeker78491 I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you weren't in Europe for a Rap tour lol. Earn wasn't visiting on a scenic trip, he was doing his job. Considering the things Earn Al and Darius got into during season 3, im gonna stand by my point that it probably wasnt a place for a small child. Van was the one who agreed to take care of Lottie while Earn was away and she ended up abandoning her without discussing any of this with Earn, or anyone else. I'm not saying Earn is a perfect parent, but I can't really see any argument for He and Van being equally as negligible in this situation
@ Earn wasn’t the artist…if Van is a trash parent then so is Earn. He had a child before he was a rap manager…if he felt it was too dangerous then maybe he shouldn’t be in that business
Managers often go on tour with their artists to supervise them. Look at how many times in S3 Earn had to bail Al out of bad situation. Earn's job is to protect Al and it's hard to that a continent away. Your argument is basically saying that parents who travel for work are bad parents. If that's how you feel, then go off, but I'm not sure a lot of people would agree with you. Van had no intention of seeing Lottie again. She completely abandoned her to live a new life in Europe without her. Earn was always going to come back to Atlanta and be in Lottie's life. Not sure how you can argue against that
As a trini in America, "Trini to the bone" feels like an episode of my life.
😂😂
I hated that episode. For the part with the random "bum hole" on the cell phone. That made no sense. It offended me.
btw the lake is real people die all the time there - lake lanier
Oh that's the same lake? I just heard about somebody new dying there last year lol. That's wild. Thanks for the info
@ yea and of course☝🏿
But rich YT republicans still out there sailing their boats…
Let's hope they continue to 😂😂
And they just built a water park there for some insane reason.
He's going overseas for work, which is something a lot parents have to do
@@chillreview636 ofc come at Van because she’s the only parent who had Lottie
BTW the white guy from the end of the big pay back episode is the same guy from the beginning of the first episode of the season at the lake. When he offs himself at the end of the big pay back episode shows how he became a ghost, which is why he reappears at lake lanier at the beginning of the season
That Tupac scene was so random and out of pocket but darkly hilarious
Hahaha my favorite part of that whole episode
@@chillreview636 didn’t she leave Lottie with her parents?
And the circumstances of jumping through the hoops to prevent that from happening all stemmed from spending time with one of her clout-chasing escort friend’s who basically pitted her life (or lack thereof)
Sure, the episode had some very surreal chaotic moments, but that’s exactly what deteriorating mental health can do to someone.

I think Lorraine being trans and taking Al to the cancel club is also a reference to the episode "B.A.N." from season 1, where he was being cancelled due to his comments about the trans community. Although I do like the perspective about his mom and her having to take both roles as single mother.
That's a solid interpretation
the old man and the tree and new jazz are my favorite episodes of the season. fernando's conversation with al during poker was so striking, and the ghost story he tells before that. this season especially has the motif of ghosts/spirits that i like. it supports their exploration of racism but also stands by itself as a way to explore (primarily alfred) a character's emotional and mental state.
the opening scene on the lake in three slaps. fernando's ghost story. the apparent spirit of sylvia following the family. the man who writes the song for al and somehow knows things about him no one else does (i read him as a spirit guide though a real person), the spirit guide, lorraine, in al's drug trip that is some representation of his late mother. i love how they're depicted as these eerie reminders of our history in a collective and personal sense. the actions of people have rippling effects no matter if they're dead or alive. and often those rippling effects stay long, long after they're gone
Damn that's really interesting analysis. I never even considered the overarching theme of spirits and our pasts and how that might connect to past of racial trauma that haunts people of color. Really great comment 👍

Yeah definitely sends a flawed message
The message is about a flawed system and how a child can easily become lost in it. It’s about how liberals put up a front of wanting to help, when in reality they are looking to do harm. It’s about how children in those systems can easily become invisible.
It’s also based on a true story, only the real one doesn’t end happily.
Curious how would you have disciplined your child, or would you have seen no issue with the behavior?

New Jazz was my favorite episode of this season
*insert this is a sick negro meme* 😂

Atlanta is a perfect show, and with season 3 I believe is necessary to have occurred the way it did in order to show that the Atlanta they were in during seasons 1 and 2 could be an idea or state of mind that doesn't leave one just because they leave that area. Fall Off???? 😂 That's the understatement of a lifetime. Season 3 and beyond is some of the worst writing a black show has ever had. Unwatchable.
I'm much more content with the direction of the show now
@mosdeaf There’s much more you should disagree with, especially when a creator like Chill Review pays respect to anti-black manosphere bro garbage like Kevin Samuels, and that’s just this video dude…
He’s said anti-black sh** and been a racist cop apologist in his other black media videos. Do you really want to trust a guy doing stuff like that to review black media honestly? I wouldn’t as a black man myself…
@@Hesaysalot ok.
What audience do you think the finale was meant for?
Weird that I JUST rewatched the last two vids you did on the show . Thank the lord tho
I think that’s why Al has such a strong reaction to it and lets him go as well
Hmmmmm... I like that theory
This is actually my favorite season. I love Van episode. I like how everyone is sorted out except Van herself.
I respect it! I still don't like the Van episode but this season as a whole did grow on me over the years
Timing is impeccable I just finished your season 2 video and went to look for 3 for it to say 5 minutes ago lol
Hahah always right on time with it
New Jazz is basically Woods from Season 2. It makes a whole lot of sense
Yeah. Very similar stories
Nah I needed this one today 😤🙏🏿 thank you fr
I gotchu homie!
Another fire 🔥 video keep it bro
Yeah that was his first real public blunder of a severe magnitude. Makes sense that it would be the end of his white likability factor
Someone said “socks” and Lorraine were ghost and it seems like one is an Angel and one is a devil with devious intentions
Never heard that theory before, but I like it
favorite season by a mile i have a deep appreciation for the anthology episodes and how they expand black stories as a whole. if the creator of the show knows it only takes a certain amount of episodes to tell the story he wants to tell i think it’s a plus that we get these extra bits of world building. and they’re great stand alone stories to show my friends who’ve never seen any of the show.
love your work, been waiting for this one to drop 🧞
The anthology episodes definitely grew on me over the years
Every time you drop a season review, it forces me to watch the next season. Gotta finish season 4 before you drop bro🔥
About "Earn" not sure if that's how its spelt: As you said S3 is not about what's right or fair it's about shifting the balance of power.
It is spelled "Earn". His name is Earnest. Earn = Earnest. Vanessa = Van. Al = Alfred.
“I used to pray for times like this”
Yippee new chill reviews retrospective
I just finished binging the show, I was so excited for this retrospective!
How'd you feel about the show now that you finished it?
@ oddly kinda sad that I finished it, I had such a good time watching it but I'm satisfied. I loved the open-ended ending even though I'm still kinda mad they killed off Clark County off-screen
As a white boy from the hood ive never been looked at differently cuz we all struggling but i always felt judged by white people in the suburbs it’s mostly about ya class not race but race is like a add on for people to separate themselves to feel better
Swear they are only in the uk for 1 episode
Probably. I admittedly have no clue what is or isn't in the UK. It's all just British to me lol
1st. Glad your dropped bro🎉
The last episode explains the whole season
Black ppl wanting to be white for success or forced to be white to be successful … Van breaks down cause she is the last one that joins in on it but it doesn’t work and it breaks her it’s like all the characters inside of her say “I just want to get away with life like white ppl” lol and the real question is do they … I want to hear more from white ppl about Atlanta especially season 3
@@chillreview636 Van is half white so that’s why she’s closer but might be even further away . If that makes sense to you
my nigga I been waiting in this☝🏿
It's completely unfair to have smoke for Van.
That's waaaay worse that Earn leaving for on a work trip for a month or two
Season three is, bar none, my favorite. It's the embodiment of Afro surrealism.
Can't argue that. There not really anything like that
I wasn’t disappointed at all about not seeing the Clark county situation play out.
33:08 I too can confirm this was the reaction of Nigerians everywhere.
43:44 idk if you know this , but on the same day that the episode aired, news of kevin Samuel's death was announced
I waited for this and all happy now
Love to see it!
S3 is great for what it is and what it tried to do, but I just like direction S1 and S2 went down more
sick, do season 4 next
Done!
@@chillreview636 WOW I LOVE YOU MAN! WELL NOT REALLY BUT YOU GET WHERE I'M COMING FROM RIGHT!? AYE THANKS MY DUDE!
Been waiting for this video
need season 4 breakdown asapp
Cooking it up as we speak
Is it fair to say that Van abandoned Lottie but not say the same of Earn?
Have you ever watched a review and it's just highlighting all the thoughts you had, bro get out of my head 😂
It's free real estate 😭😭
Yeah the season finale was definitely a miss, they probably just needed a Vann focused episode since she had very little screen time this season. But other than that, this was an excellent season! Great video as well!
Major problems with this video:
We own this land they been hoeing us on our own land
What your speficially are your referring too regarding hoeing us? Not throwing shade, it's just your comment is a little vague
@trebrown8144 It’s funny Chill Review is crying about you being vague, when he himself is vague about his own politics and beliefs.
But if you pay attention to what he actually says in his videos, there are cracks in his RUclips persona that reveal where his politics are at. Chill Review has used c*** talking points, has downplayed how severe of an issue racism is, has been an apologist for racist cops, and in this video, revealed he’s a Kevin Samuels stan.
I wouldn’t trust any observations or statements Chill Review makes on racial issues or women if I were you.

The "black" people from africa are hamites.

Long story short but very important so you can see through every lie, the vatican payed for the entire world to invade our contientents and split them up amongst themselves. I'm an idoit and I can clearly see why canada is french British colony .

There was more times I counted on one hand in this video alone where I asked myself if this guy was really black. Especially the episode where they have black face in Europe. Season 4 bro lol
Season 1 and 2 was the crew in Atlanta IN the jungle and season 3 is the jungle on the road rich and famous TO ME thug
1:12 you and me both brother but it was such a good episode
They got us 🥲
I was watching this season week by week hoping the next episode wasn’t some anthology shit, now Atlanta is my favorite show oat but this is the only season I can say has more than 2 episodes I can say “I don’t feel like watching that” whenever I wanna rewatch something from the season or others...
@@chillreview636”didn’t like” is strong I wouldn’t say there’s episodes I didn’t like, there’s some I didn’t care much for tho
The Black reparations episode, Tarrare, white fashion, Trini 2 the bone (I probably gotta rewatch that) & rich wigga poor wigga.
@JaeSproo bro doesn't know about subtext 😩
It's a cool theory, but I'm just not sure where anything the show points to that
Van abandoned Lottie, but earn got to live a life outside of the both of them without any push back or questions about his role in Lottie’s life ?… Ok… that’s ridiculous
Van even had to take care of Lottie while earn was in college.
@@CrownMeBrie to be fair. I also called K Samuels a d*ck head lol
I would hope not…
S3 of Atlanta was like s2 of the Wire. Looking back at it, I get it. But at the time, it felt detached from why I enjoyed the show.
I'm still on season 1 of the wire but I've a lot of people say the same thing about season 2. Something about those Docks I guess lol
Bros “f*ck Van arc” been here since season 1 lmao I think her season 3 finale episode is one of the best.
I love Van in seasons 1,2 & 4. Hate her depiction in season 3 and that finale is a big reason why. Why do you like it so much? I'm genuinely curious
The rich Wigga Poor wigga episode is a representation of Drake and his character...well thats my view....season 3 is Hella underrated
Lol this is like the 3rd different episode/character that somebody has assumed to be Drake in the comments. You could right tho
I don’t know if you say this later, but that random white guy is the white guy from Lake Lanier
Yeah I peeped that on my most recent rewatch of the season. Didn't think it was that important mention in the vid, but definitely interesting. I wonder if he was supposed to be in more episodes
@@chillreview636 I doubt it.The conversations he has in both share a common theme of “ this is what we deserve”
I feel like they had to have the weird episodes because they still needed to show the city of “Atlanta” …the main cast was in Europe the whole time
One of the episodes takes place in Trinidad though, and there's nothing in those other strange arc episodes that particularly represent Atlanta. They all could have taken place anywhere in America and been the same story
the irony in you not liking the van episode is funny😂
Lol I really wish that episode just never existed. Van is a great character in the rest of the show
@ My take is people hate Van episodes because people struggle with writing black women well so that it’s digestible for everyone outside of us.
Another banger CR!
Thanks! ✊🏿
I went to London once as a kid and said I'm never coming back 😂😂
Earn is equally a bad parent!!!
He could have his daughter with them in Europe
I see where you're coming from but I disagree. A European rap tour is no place for a small child. Earn left to go on that trip under the pretense that Van would take care of Lottie while Earn provides for them. Van is the one who betrayed Earn trust and left Lottie with her parents so she could find herself Europe. She's much worse in this situation
@ No
I took my son on a tour of France last year.
