Yes, the last time we had a power cut, out here in the sticks, it lasted for about 36 hours. Me and my missus loved it and wanted it to go on for a week or so to really test our preps. When it came back on we could hear loud cheers from next door but we just looked at each other with disappointment on our faces.

I regard prepping the same way as paying for insurance. I don’t feel ripped off if our house doesn’t burn down or my car doesn’t end up in an accident I’m relieved. I’m not waiting for a SHTF moment to use my preps, because come that moment it WILL be way worse than you can imagine!!!

I recently had a power outage from early morning to after 5pm...thankfully the hot water had been put on an hour before bed time the night before which is normal. I have two gas camping stoves, a whistling stove top kettle, we had a small radio for music and we were absolutely fine. I had an evening meal planned using the camping stoves as I had no idea when the power was back on. The afternoon was spent playing Monopoly, it was a good trial run for SHTF and we all coped fine. Portable solar panel and battery pack for charging phones so all was good. Good to test out the preps and see if there`s anything that could be improved.

That all sounds amazing but as someone who’s involved in the tabletop games industry you need to sack monopoly off haha
Can I suggest “the mind” “coup” and “cascadia” for three games that are easy to learn and will prevent you from undoing all your hard work in prepping by having to kill yourself from boredom with monopoly 😂

I know what you mean about being disappointed about the power coming back on. Last year a load of houses near me needed evacuating, and they were looking at extending that evacuation. Had mine and my families bug out bags all ready, double checked them. Waited a couple of days to hear more, then on the 4th day found out we only needed to evacuate for a few hours! 😂 Interestingly, it was my 10 YO who was the most gutted, as he wanted the adventure of it. Despite that, the fact that houses just up the road from us needed to immediately leave their houses for 5 odd days shows the importance of having some sort of bug out bag.

I originally started prepping as a form of inflation proofing as food prices started to rise. I'd always been OK for alternative ways of cooking and lighting in case of short power cuts because I have wild camped and hill-walked for years and have various stoves and fuel, ditto water filtration but I've expanded into preparing for longer term outages because cyberattacks are becoming a worry. The effects of an escalation in the issues with Russia and a resulting breakdown in the supply chain is also making me prep harder. Virtually no-one that I know seems to be doing any kind of prepping - there seems to be little awareness of world events.

Our psychological threat response system is the Limbic System (LS) which is constantly assessing the environment for ‘threats’.
The last 4-years in particular have seen a massive uptick in psychological warfare/attack against ‘Joe Public’ and as such the LS has been dialled up into Hyper-arousal which is a state of heightened physiological and psychological arousal. It’s characterised by increased alertness, restlessness and a heightened state of readiness leading to….’prepping’.
However, this aroused state can’t be maintained indefinitely which leads to psychological exhaustion when the LS goes into Hypo-arousal which is a state of reduced physiological and psychological arousal. The brain has to shut down and take a break or it will breakdown/burnout. It’s characterised by a lack of energy, motivation and engagement with the environment.
The constant assault on our ‘wellbeing’ is a key psych-strategy being deployed; to wear down the resolve and resilience of people so they become exhausted and compliant. Prepping is like exercising, rest days are essential.
    Apologies for the essay ✌

Oh fairly recently we had another issue with our local water pumping station and we were without water. My brother dashed to a local cash & carry to stock up on bottled water and ask me if I needed any and I laughed and said I’m more than prepared for this and have been since the last time our local water pumping station failed years ago and have been prepared ever since! Yet I can’t even drum in to my own flesh & blood the importance of being prepared! Humanity is doomed ;-)

    Again , thanks Steve .
What I get really fed up with is , people won’t listen and ridicule our prepping efforts. Seems very wide spread . Well amongst my circle of friends anyway . Don’t get me wrong I don’t tell them much but do tell them to purchase food if you have spare money to invest , buy tinned foods especially with long shelf life . Food prices never go down anyway.
I’ve invested in a small solar set up since your “solar basics” video a couple of weeks ago , so please don’t get too despondent about the number of views on solar videos . At least the message is getting through
Looking forward to the next video

I’m 76 now but I remember when I was about 12 I said to my mum, “ why do you keep a sideboard full of food”? Mum smiled at me and said “ just in case”. That’s all she had to say and I understood.what you are doing is “ just in case” and a lot more people should be doing it as well. It is up to us to safeguard our future. I am always looking for alternative ways to use fuel, fats, wood, sawdust and rocket stoves, gasifiers etc. One day I’ll crack it all. Carry on undeterred . Phil.

Power failures are something I have to deal with that can go for days. It was one of the first things I prepared for because it does happen. The good thing about batteries and solar is that they are silent. I do have a generator that I use during the day if needed and can charge my batteries to go over to at night.
I live in Australia, so people really think that we are in a safe part of the world. No governments here telling people to prep or emergency broadcast drills, etc. I still prep, but I don't talk about it to anyone, they would think I was mad here.

RE pay off for solar etc, I never looked at it that way either I've 3.6kw on roof, 12kw of house battery and 3 powerbanks circa 4kw total. Cost around 15 grand for all of that, and I couldn't give a crap about the pay off, was never the primary install reason.

One of those things we need to be careful of. If anything like my neighbourhood during a power outage, everyone comes out and has a moan and a chat for 20 mins or so until as like yourself, some communication is received. We need to go out just for a look to 'blend in'. Perhaps lighting your home wasn't the wisest things to do even with blackout options until the comms were received. As its evening anyway and the power was coming back on most likely during a time when you are going to bed. Was it worth exposing yourself. A few candles and a torch without the blackout option would draw less attention and less suspicion if seen.

Is solar worth investing in even if you only have a couple of hundred pounds max? Or do you need a big amount to make it worthwhile? I'm really early on in prepping journey and don't have much money (got to love statutory maternity pay lol) but am interested in it.

    • @everydayprepper

Hi, thanks for your comment. It depends what you mean by worthwhile. If you want a really long term backup that can run a fridge and other larger items, then you can start small and build it up, which is what I did. If you are just prepping to ensure you have backup for USB and other small devices then an all in one unit may suffice. You can get a 100W solar panel, charge controller and a battery for less than £200 which would charge all your usb devices if the grid went down. Thanks for watching btw 🙂

I am a conspiracy theorist but I love the fact that you concentrate your channel on prepping. There is the argument that you have to keep up with what They have planned for us in order to know what to prepare for but frankly our prepping all amounts pretty much to the same things, having to rely on what we have in, food shortages, inflation, supply chain issues, power outages, breakdown of society and nuclear war. That is us in Europe of course. In other parts of the world they have volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, earthquakes etc. Thankfully in Blighty at least, we don’t very often have these and when we do, see above!

Talking water YT recommended a video about water distillation and I thought that would be another way to create drinking water assuming you have power or a heat source. Rain catchment is all well and good, but with the way pigeons poop on everything including our roof I wasn’t planning to use that water for anything other than flushing the toilet while the sewerage system is running or washing stuff up. Now if things get desperate I might have to use that water. So that’s my next project to research that. Oh and after I watched that video YT recommended videos about stilling alcohol 😂 Though that would be a great barter item after SHFT! ;-)
