About this place :-
CHIKKAMAGALURU: Galikere, a natural lake on the highest peak of the Baba Budangiri Hills, is crying for attention, thanks to the callous disregard of tourists visiting the area.
Once known for its pristine waters, this lake is now being polluted with garbage and plastic bags thrown into it by visitors. It has turned into a dumping ground for non-biodegradable wastes such as plastic plates, cups and bottles.
Galikere has enhanced the picturesque beauty of Baba Budengiri hill range, a historic pilgrimage centre. It houses a variety of aquatic animals and birds. Due to its proximity to the Bhadra and Lakkavalli wildlife sanctuaries, many wild animals frequent this lake. However, the recent pollution has posed a serious threat to the lives of fauna depending on the lake. The local lore connects the origin of this lake to the Indian epic Mahabharata. It says Bhima, during the period of Ajnyathavasa, struck the ground here with his mace, which led to the formation a natural lake. It was named ‘Galikere’ as Bhima was the son of wind god Vaayu.
Villagers in the adjoining areas bring their deities for Ganga Snana (ritual bathing), during which the devotees throw garbage into the lake. Devotees of Kencharaya Swamy temple located nearby add to the pollution. who visit this place keep dumping plastic and other pollutants, showing blatant disregard to protecting the natural beauty of this place. Locals have complained that the area is a hub for illegal activities - especially at night.
These developments have incurred the wrath of environmental activists. Convener of Chandradrona Ulisi Horata G Veeresh told Express that due to the many frolickers, the water body is being contaminated. He insisted that the district administration, forest department and tourism department take measures to curb illicit activities and save Galikere.
Sources from the tourism department said they had not received any complaints so far and assured of taking action to conserve the natural lake.
