He actually had one of Yu-Gi-Oh's most famous villains dead to rights but passed out before he could declare an attack, and his filler arc duel with Valen had him turn into Lord of the Red, making him one of the coolest boss monsters in the Red Eyes archetype (even though "Lord of the Red" isn't technically a Red Eyes card...) Joey's amazing.

At least Syrus gets his deserved title as Jaden's best friend. A lot of the original, perfectly good characters from seasons 1 and 2 got upstaged by new ones in season 3. This split focus led to imperfect development for all of them.
