Trey Lance taught John Lynch a very valuable lesson - starts in college matter. Look at this latest draft you'll see 4th and 5th year college players instead of the resume Lance was able to put up due to Covid.

@@dakotastyles It doesn't matter who's pick it was, its a noticeable trend everywhere really, more years in college, what some might call the brock Purdy effect (4 years as a starter is good) but really probably has more to do with Covid making it very noticeable, lack of college starts makes for very unfinished products.

Heh. Look at _EVERY_ QB's stats who played with Jerry Rice with & without him & their passing #s to him versus all other of their receivers. None of them declined. They all _bombed_ without him. Steve Young was a *tremendous bust* without him who got truly lucky they had T.O. to pick up the slack the one season Rice got injured.
The mark of QB greatness isn't winning with the best roster, it's elevating weaker ones like Mahomes & Fields (in the 8 games Eberflus allowed Getsy more control over the offense) do. Fields & Getsy made the Bears the #1 offense 3 weeks straight _BEFORE_ they acquired D.J. Moore. He out-played Mahomes, Allen & Burrow's élite WR trio breaking records with Darnell Mooney & Chase Claypool, two guys famous for being unable to catch passes that land on them as his main 2 receivers.
_That_ is legendary. Unfortunately, Eberflus is charismatic & Fields got blamed for all those losses. Amazing isn't it how perceptions count for more than facts with most people? "This proves Fields can't wi" because the Bears lost all 3 of those games.

I started at QB for two years on a very good varsity team (Merritt Island H.S. in Merrit Island Fl.), with my dad being the OC those two years (he played QB at Navy) and learned to read defenses from watching a lot of the 22 tape with my dad. I fancy myself a pretty good college QB scout...from the tape I saw of Trey in college I was shocked anyone had him rated as a top prospect. All I saw when I watched him was a big kid more physically mature than the H.S. level talent he was playing against...his big runs where he over powered people were against defensive players that would have had a hard time starting on my H.S. teams. I thought he had a slow delivery and didn't look terribly natural in the pocket...he did have a strong arm but that is all I saw that i liked and even that wasn't an Elway or Marino arm. I had him rated as a 3rd round or lower pick...nothing I saw said high first round and certainly not top 5.

I was really disappointed in the pick and two, at what they gave up to move up to draft him. In this day and age, there is no player worth that much draft capital. It's the way the college game is played, there's no sure fire QB'S out there, it's all speculation and a crapshoot.
Secondly, yes the covid shortened season was definitely not the time to use up all your savings to buy lottery tickets. Niners drafted a project, then said the project has to figure out his own development. Why would you expect a guy who threw 288 passes in college to play the same as a guy who threw 1400 passes in college? Even with Brock’s experience it’s clear the Niners were shocked with what they drafted; he over-performed, and they realized they won the lotto.
Again…I DONT want Trey back. I think the kid is surrounded by question marks because in the end…he hasn’t really seen the field. Clearly has one talent, but may just be too raw right now. He’ll never justify 3 first rounders, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have a successful NFL career.

😂 College potential doesn't always translate to the pros. QB is the most over hype draft pick. Athletic ability doesn't mean the guy can play at NFL level. Measureables. Arm strength. A former QB said, how often do you throw 60 yrd passes. Mobility depends on offense scheme, Lamar n Kap is great at running, but lacking in passing. Some Intangibles ability to overcome, ability to process quickly, no fear of rush, etc... These guys drafted #1. Wilson (Jets), Fields (Bears), Jones (Pats), now Lance (49ers). All had college talent, but haven't translated to pros yet. Sometimes its the situation too. Rebuilding teams could be lacking in offense n defense. QB can't succeed without support. A coach who can develop n use the player's abilities. Niners tried using Trey as runner. Designing run /pass options. But, He proved, he's not as fast or elusive as he appeared in college. As a passer, Trey is not quick or decisive. Starring down receiver, like a rookie QB. SYoung said the passing window are a lot smaller in pros. Trey appeared to be hesitant. Kreug witness in camp, Trey misses 1st option, starts to run, misses 2nd option. Someone yells just throw. Former WR, JJones says the game is too fast for Trey right now. Former LB/ED Acho says he doesn't think Trey is reacting/reading to defense formation. Trey is missing a lot of experience. He could have switch to div 1 like Newton n Burrow for better competitions. He can't get back this experience in the NFL. NFL is win now, not for long league. He should try CFL or UFL (USFL?). He choose to come out early, he thought his NDSU experience was good enough. He a good kid, hard worker. But trying hard may not be good enough. Many good players, just can't make 53 rosters. 20 mill is more than enough to retire if he wants too. Niners wasted 3 1st rd picks on him. Could have pick O-line n D-line help. Fuuny? This draft, Niners picked players with full college experience. Head scratcher, pick 2 slot/gadget WRs n sign extension to Jennings n sign Owens son. Niners have 10 WRs for 5-6 roster spots. Couldn't the D-line used more run stuffer or O-line use more starters or backups. Seems to have 3 SS, but need FS to replace Gibson. Guess another wait n see draft. Only 2 starters from last yr. Moody (not Robbie yet, missed kicks), Brown (came in for Huf injury, but do Niners trust him, brought Logan in). Niners need more from draft. Need to get younger, better n cheaper. Many contracts up in 2025. Hopefully, Niners found some gems. Will be interesting to see how Kyle integrate Pearsall with Deebo, Aiyuk, Kittle, Cmc, even Cowing. Assume more teams will try Chiefs defensive scheme on Niners. Press coverage. Limit Brock quick reads. Attack the O-line, specially the right side (C-G-T). How do the Niners counter?
