All due respect: I've read posts and comments from sound engineers and audiophiles who have been handling equipment for multiple years and even decades. All of them that I have read say that pulling the plug or plugging in with phantom power does zero damage and that it is a myth that it does. According to them, they have done it untold numbers of times and some actually do it all the time. And they say: no damage. Also, I read something from an engineer who was not a person who had a lot of experience with audio equipment, but explained the science of them in exhaustive detail. He too said it won't damage equipment. Just thought you'd like to know that. I know I do, having done it once or twice with expensive to me equipment!
Lol...all due respect huh? I have lost mics to it...so has Dylan. Sorry man...its an actual thing... Of course I mean that with all due respect to your engineers
Here is the next challenge Aiden: Take this microphone now with all its damage, record a brief dialogue passage with it, and see if you can process it up to an acceptable level!
I think the noise is not exactly caused by the sledge hammer. It think it's because you took the bottom cap off and in doing so, you've removed it's shield from the outside interference which can cause a lot of noice. I you could make it work with the cap on. I'd bet it'd work just like nothing happened.
Good mod! This could be a popular thread on gearslutz or whatever they're calling it now. 1st off, I'm impressed that the grille didn't break more. I've dropped 414s from lower than that and the clasp that holds the windscreen on cracked. 2nd off, I heard a good bit of a difference in the top and some in the lows (although can't be certain it was just the way you were talking). It actually kinda sounds good all mashed up like that. Less fizzy highs/a bit tighter lows. Fun stuff! Get that thing bronzed and put it on your mantle!
Oh I'll be keeping this beauty. I noticed a few things too...but I wasn't being too careful with my placement...something I will have to keep in mind when I do the 58!
@@DarkCornerStudios The 58s gonna win that battle. Would be curious to hear what a dented 58 grille sounds like compared to a mint one. Kinda curious if that makes a difference.
You're very brave to do this 🙌🏾 distroy a perfect microphone that I can only dream of having for my music 😭😭 Im depressed but I support the video it helped me thanks this video deserve more likes
I came up with a crazy idea of burning out a sponge inside grill because I can't open my Chinese mic, which is glued inside... What can possibly go wrong
A high end condenser mic would hold up better but this mic doesn't seem bad at all for what it costs. High quality dynamic mics are still tougher though.
I've recently dropped a Rode M2 that is considered a mic for live applications. It fell from about 120 cm on a laminate floor and it stopped working. So I had a quite opposite experience :D
My heart goes out to you. Much like the unplugging test...yeah...if it hits just right...any mic can die. Funny enough...Rode has some of the most rugged mics too. That sucks man...sorry to hear
@@DarkCornerStudios Thanks. I've called Rode technical support to find an authorized service. They told me that M2 is very hard to fix, but they sent me a new mic for free, so finally I was quite lucky.
I want a whole series on this from something like the blue yeti, king neat bee 1 & 2 to the sm58, to the Shure sm7b (that doesn't. work anymore of course) but it would be cool to see how much damage these mics can take
I wanted to do that...but all indicators are that it is an immediate death. Perhaps I should do a shorter video highlighting that. Anyhow...dont go to the washroom or make soup with your mic and you should be fine...lol
@@DarkCornerStudios I have seen a few videos here that say their mics stop working for a time then work again. Once in a while mine would not work but after a couple of days it was fine . But its been a week since I last used it. Troubleshooting has narrowed it down to the mic. Yesterday I cleaned it a bit, it was a little dusty but not bad for 8 years old. I will try again today.

Aw thanks!

But the hammer causing noise cuz of denting it and making gaps around the body does count.
Currently waiting for the SM58 😁
It sounded better after the hammering. Sounds smoother now like a dynamic.

You should send the microphone to Spitfire Audio or Venus Theory so they can make a decent sound effect for movie scores from the effect you created.

I hear ya
Even smashed it still sounds better than when someone talks into the top of a blue yeti.
Like this video a shame that RUclips hasn't run with this a bit more.
Honestly surprised it didnt take off...this is right up the alley of a LOT of people...
Anyhow...it will probably randomly pop off in a year or so

Someone in the world had to do it, great video haha
Can you really damage a condenser by unplugging it with the phantom power running? I thought that was rare
It is rare...but not that rare.
Do it enough to any mic and eventually it will get tired of it
I just dropped mine on the floor but still work fine is it common with condenser mics? 😩
I have an MXL 770 and I like how yours sounded up until the sledgehammer. I am seriously wondering what DIY things I can do to get it less sibilant.
Planned obsolescence - how about a stove test ?

Dylan wouldn't lend me his u87 to test it out...lol
the shark has officially been jumped 🤣😂🤣
We need a series of Hulk Smash Stuff videos.

Gonna need some financing for that...lol
SM7B? Do you want to destroy the hammer? ;) :D
If you damage a King Bee it buzzes.
Good Mic….. as a weapon jejeje great video 🎉
Cheers!
My mixer has no option to turn phantom power off. How can I unplug my condenser mic then without damaging it?
Turn it off?
Now to keep it fair... Do the same thing with a U87
Now we won't know what happens if you accidentally drop the mic in the toilet or in boiling soup 😞

This: is the microphone as a BASE LINE TEST 🤌👌👌
Yeah phantom power unplugging killed my 2k mic 😂
Don't crap your pants with light boxer shorts. That shit will go right down to the ankles.
John Cameron Swayze microphone treatment, takes a licking and .....
You should have done the test with the industry's standards: SM58 vs U87Ai (but you're paying, not me!) 😁😂🤣
you should do a test of how much spit would a condenser mic take before it starts to break
This one is going to happen
Mine fell off from almost 5 feet... no problem at all... hahaha, we can agree is a hard Mic
now do a humidity test :)
You can still use the microphone to record punk rock.
That noise tho...
Imagine having that doubled or tripled...ugh...lol
