Thank you George, this information is exactly what I needed for my beloved BMW. I began remote work over the past couple of years so I do not drive daily as in the past. The ticking began recently and I thought my time with my BMW was coming to an end. Now I know an interstate run at least once a week is needed.

I see many videos about ticking BMW engines, it's all about the oil !!! I use Redline 10W/40 in my N52 E90 330i. I only get the rattling lifters when the engine is low on oil. Redline fully synthetic oil is the bomb, don't get any lifter noise.

I had this unexpectedly one cold morning from a car that runs spot on and genuinely thought the engine had suffered chronic oil starvation and was wrecked. It wasnt, but the loud tapping/ticking stayed even a few miles up the motorway. I stopped in the services and switched the engine off and when I restarted half a minute later the motor was back to its quiet old self (140000 miles) it hasnt returned again, yet. The car gets regular motorway use so its a mystery why it suddenly occured. Was so relieved as the car would be written off with engine damage due to age and miles if it was as bad as it sounded ! Theres no dipstick on mine which added to the drama until I scrolled into the onboard services and confirmed oil level all in the green 🙂

I was going to say an “Italian Tune-Up” does them wonders!!! (Getting on a Highway and letting her stretch them athletic Bavarian legs!!!), and she will purr for you for it. She is an Alpine-Autobahn Beast!!! Not a “City Queen”.

The good old fashioned "Italian tune-up"... never fails. Keeping the oil change intervals regular will also help, and will help with engine life in general. But quite frankly anyone who has a straight 6 BMW in their life and ISN'T regularly taking it up to 6k between shifts needs to have a word with themselves!

BMW released updates to the lifters and head design to address this issue under a TSB. Whatever it happened on my car, I found fresh BMW oil change (sooner than recommended by factory) and some high speed highway speeds helped. The lifters bleed down with short duration drives

Remember! At least 4 lifters are permanent compressed when the engine stops and the car is parked.
That over time pushes oil out of the chambers. Each time the engine stops. How much, depends on the wear.
The engine needs some time, temperature and RPM to bleed them.
If you have many engine stops and short driving routes, the hydraulic lifters get drained and begin to tick louder and louder ...

An accusump or similar, set up for pre-oiling, will solve the issue. At least it did solve the issue 100% for me. Even for short trips. The problem occurs at start-up because the lifters sometimes do not get enough oil and one or more will start sucking air. When this happens it may take a while to get rid of the air bubble. With a pre-oiler the oil system is pressurized and there will be no oil starvation and therefore no noise. Even when the oil is thick.

I have to disagree with your statement about thicker oil causing more ticking. The ticking on my Z4 N52 is much less when I use 40w oil than when I use 30w oil; even after warm up. Since I used to swap to 30w in the winter, I have much experience with this. I decided changing oil seasonally was a bother, so I now just stay with 40w.
The lifters on many cars' lifters are louder during cold starts for well, other reasons that I can't explain! Maybe low flow?

Thank you for the video George!! Me having the same issue on engine with roughly 110000 mls. We have tried many ways to get rid of it but at the end I am planning for head replacement. I was thinking about to change just rollers, HVA but this is some issue with head design. So after all I have been told to go with head replacement (head with new design). Head replacement is for the same cost like to change HVA rollers....I have still some time (until April 2021) to decide which way to spent money :D. If someone got some tips what would be the correct way I am open for discussion ;)

Do you use 0W-40 oil? I used to get ticking sometimes but I don't get the ticking ever since I've used the tinnner 0W-40 oil and changed it every 4,000 miles. Well i've heard it once but it went away within a minute. I'm on 104,000 miles

Do you take it on regular long drives and really rev it out?

@@eded12333 first owner used 5W30 Castrol :(, oil change between 20000-25000 kms. I have used Mobil ESP 5W30, oil change 8000 kms + flush. Now I am using Mobil Peak Life 5W-50. Ticking noise developed after cca 8 months. Maybe I could try 0w40 but I am worrying that to go from 5W50 to 0w40 would turned engine into oilcan :D

@@GeorgeAusters 2 times 20kms (to work from home and back) and then 50kms to another city and back on daily basis. I am rev it out once engine is in optimal temerature range and keep revs above 3000. When engine is cold I am keeping revs up to 2000- 2800. I think HVA are just mechanically on its way to heaven. As I wrote earlier I have still some time to make decision what to change. I will do valve cover gasket soon so I think it will be good to check the camshafts, HVA.... Maybe it will help me to decide what to change/replace :)

Mine n52 engine has started to get this annoying ticking sound... I drive everyday but only short runs, like 5 min to work and 5 min home. It was starting ticking again when i got home so I was getting it up to work temperature and then i did 2 kickdowns and the sound is gone.
The engine screams for a readline when it starts to tick 😉
But i wondering if i can do anything else to keep it away? Like try a thinner oil? I now run with castrol 5w40.
