What Does Pinning Mean in Soccer?

An explanation of pinning as an attacking tactical concept in soccer. Pinning is a very useful concept especially in possession heavy teams. Pinning can also be useful against teams that use a man marking defensive system. It is based around having attacking players focused on exploiting space left by a defender. If the attacker is able to "pin" two or more defenders then the attacker will be able to exploit space left by one defender and force another defender to step out of their space, possibly opening up space for a fellow attacker. Pinning tends to be highly contextual. It is typically useful when scheming for a specific opposition whose formation and shape you are familiar with.
