  • In this illustrated lecture, Professor Ben Kiernan identifies powerful connections and patterns that, for nearly every case of genocide, gave early warning of the catastrophe to come: racism or religious prejudice, territorial expansionism, and obsessions with antiquity and agrarianism.
Kiernan is the multi-award-winning author of Blood and Soil: A World History of Genocide and Extermination from Sparta to Darfur, recipient of a 2008 Gold Medal for the Best Book in History.
He highlights the rich historical evidence and the importance of its tell-tale signs for predicting and preventing future genocides.
Co-presented by the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University.

use of antiquity to justify expansionism and agrarian settlements is something reminding me of an apartheid state in the Middle East

Re: Agrarianism: Mass killers Stalin and Mao clearly did NOT romanticize agrarianism, they wanted to overcome it by industrializing/modernizing. They were not obsessed with antiquity, but rather with MODERNITY. Stalin destroyed small farmers - labeling them "Kulaks" - by ways of famines and mass killings. So these two features do not seem to hold up as GENERAL features of genocides/mass killings.

Mao could quote the chinese classics and cherished stories such as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and "The Water Margin." A key part of his theory is working with the peasants (very useful during the war and civil war) and wrote how thankful the Chinese should be that the peasants are "poor and blank".

You clearly know the word but not the meaning, I suggest you read a book titled Dictionary.
