He's supposed to be a visiting lecturer teaching music in schools, colleges, universities and in the institutes of arts and culture. @ Agbaletu, this is an excellent new dimension to your postings. For once, Segun Awe impressed me immensely and I agree with 95% of what he said here. The only bit I disagree with is his continued claimed that his first record would have sent KSA and CCEO packing. Segun don't seem to appreciate the fact that people like my friend Apostle Matthew Olojede were merely diplomatic with him at the time but he took what they said literarily. I have listened to that track of his many times to try and see if I missed something with my initial assessment of it but I know 100% that my first assessment was right. The track was something new on the scene at the time but it was at best 40% of the quality of what KSA and CCEO waxed during those years. Did I go out to buy it? No. Would I now download it for free on YT to enjoy it on my own devices like I've done with works of the legends mentioned? No. @ Agbaletu, please help do a posthumous episode on the brilliant Late Tunde Ade (Adeyemo) from Awe. I love his works so much that I can hardly go through a single day without singing his track "Ise Loogun Ise". Please re-interview Lecturer Bob Aladeniyi, Thousand Wire and any other support personnel who worked with him. He was the closest and best to CCEO in terms of record output and it was a terrible loss that his life was cut short. CCEO acknowledgment of his would be good too. Bless you.
The man is simply saying that any cultural medium should continually evolve. I don't understand the repeated refrain that the guy is arrogant because he advocates innovation. Its eternally true that life must contunually be improved. Why are other genres like fuji overtaking juju? His simple assertion should be taken very seriously...
Why won’t they call KSA and OBEY to play in parties? The people in age bracket with KSA and OBEY will continue to invite them. Let look it from this perspective, those people born in 50s believe that Pele and Maradona were the best player while new generation would tell you Messi or Ronaldo. He should work on himself to be better. He’s a good instrumentalist.
Nobody will leave the stage for you, segun. You need to prove your worth and find your way up. The world is competitive, Sunny and Obey will not leave for you.
Baba Segun Awe is perfectly rigid and I give it to him. I respect his depth of flow as a thoroughbred musician. He's very detailed musically, highly intelligent and very true to himself, which is not an attribute that is peculiar to many of us that are yorubas. Being his third interview I'll be seeing on Àgbàletù, I was not bored; art is indeed ingrained in him. All thesame he should accept that all men have their nature and measure of gifting and grace. Baba Obey remains a legend in his space and we cannot take that away from him, so also Baba King (KSA). They all guided their art jealously and we cannot blame them for doing that. Luck might catch up with Baba Awe probably later in his own career too, just like Pa Fatai Rolling Dollars. He should be guided as regards his speeches concerning his bosses in thesame field. I must assert that Mr Dele Adeyanju is breaking fallow grounds in his investigative space as an intelligent journalist. Thumbs up to you sir. 1:51:00
Honestly, I am not sure his style of music would have sent KSA and CCEO packing. Also, I might not resonate with his level of arrogance and display of " Mr. Know it all". However, if you listened to his song during that time as we did, especially 'Se Alafia ni', you will SURELY agree with me that he was destined to go far and do good for himself. His style of music can comfortably be substituted for Fela or Orlando Julius style of music and those are the type of music from Africa that sold out shows abroad at the time. I assume somehow along the line, perhaps because of his arrogance or stubbornness and 'I too Sabi" attitude, he was spiritually short-changed which he still battles till date. May the Lord come to his rescue, and he realise his mistakes and make amend where necessary. Mr. Segun Awe is a very talented artiste. Thank you Mr. Agbaletu for your unrelenting efforts to set the records straight, another masterpiece as usual.
You are very correct. His music is nowhere able to kick anybody out of the game. He needs to chill jere! Same story since 1909! His stubbornness has kept him under. God gave him good talent, but the devil gave him the heart of arrogance, which has disturbed him for a long time. He needs to go bath in 7 oceans for deliverance (pun intended) lol
Thanks @Agbaletu for facilitating this master class. Please let this be an inaugural class. I will like you to exploit the place of culture because someone like Pastor Tao and other non-Yoruba speakers who made excellent and distinct contributions to Yoruba music should be interviewed towards appreciating and more importantly having them on how they could fit into musical genres outside their own culture for the records and for learning purposes. Thanks
I was laughing myself out when I heard most of what Segun Awe said about other musicians' leaders. Believe me, people should not take him seriously. He's a comedian
This man is excellent and confident. His truth and bluntness may easily be misconstrued for pride. I just pray him, baba obey and KSA will completely reconcile as they secretly wished for in their hearts

Àgbà really delved into the technicalities of Juju with this interview and there's no other best for the diagnosis like Segun Awẹ (not minding the catching headline 😂). This will really keep juju alive. May the universe keep blessing you.
Indeed this is a master class on the guitar elements of Juju music. Kudos to Agbaletu for adding value to our entertainment history, sociology, performance and even philosophy. I admire and respect his gradual emergence as an encyclopaedia and knowledge curator. May God almighty continue to enrich, enhance and empower him to do more impactful and greater works for posterity.
You have to give it uncle Segun for always speaking his mind. But baba Obey should genuinely reconcile with him. Have him feature in one of his engagements.
Egbon Segun...i, give it to you anytime, anyday...you are an embodiment of history... you, gave it your very best, amidst pluses and minuses... and, you were open to corrections... once again,i, give it to you... thanks so so much... and to Mr Dele... thanks for the opportunity, for some of us to learn some history... kudos to you and your esteem staff members...👍🙏👊
You are largely right but the issue is that KSA in particular is now a terrible shadow of himself. I once commented to one of his shows as being like an old boxer who is punch drunk and having one more fight for money. His band boys are regularly out of synch with him and are so far below par of his original band members. It's sad.
@@ultimateoneWell, KSA or any of his contemporaries at the age of 78yrs will never play like they did in their heydays. It ain’t possible!!! KSA still has some magic whether its acknowledged or not. He is perhaps one of the top three entertainers in Nigeria today. There’s no high class society party that KSA is not on the bandstand, for me that says a lot about his brand. Yes, he is aging, but he is doing so very gracefully. After all, he has nothing to prove to anyone any longer
This man is not serious, he doesn't weigh his words before dropping them. He always thinks he's better than everyone. I used to really love him in the past. I still love him but he's killing the love. He needs to apply wisdom when he talks. Who is he to tell his masters to retire. Yẹ̀yẹ́nátù.😏
Mr. Segun Awe, his Self- Gratification and his fallacy, it’s high time we write a book about him😅😅😅😅. No argument you became a good guitarist under the mentoring of Chief Commander himself and his band (I am sure nobody ever mentioned that to you). That alone is a fact that history will never forget. According to your narrative, you were brought to Inter-Reformer in 1974 by your sister but started performing on stage in 1975. So Obey was already a proven guitarist before you climbed stage and he was also a fantastic band leader. Amazingly Obey was 33 years old in 1975 (He was still relatively young and I am sure you were more younger), and that was also 9 years after the release of his first record (1966). So if Inter-Reformer gave you the opportunity to express yourself when you were allowed to joined them on stage as part of your further development, stop attributing that to you being the person that changed Obey style of music. Yea, you had a fantastic time with the band 1975-1979 no doubt , and you contributed your tokens to the music, you became a fantastic guitarist and history will never forget. Sir, when you left, Commander still went on to releases great music with great instrumentations, I mean EVERGREENS 🤣🤣🤣🤣 . Sir, I know you have personal issue with Commander, I am not happy either with some treatment from those band leader, truth be told. But on Obey music. Just appreciates the periods you were there. The band was better before you climbed stage and the band became even stronger and better when you left. You too check the music after you left nah😂😂😂😂. That statement ‘None of them can meet up my level’😂😂😂 I don’t know where it’s coming from, seriously.
You have given a well put together and constructive feedback to Elder Segun Awe. I hope he sees the beauty of what you have written. However, from my experience of dealing with instrumentalists and general practioners of juju music there is a fundamental flaw and sense of entitlement that comes with the arts. This is prevalent amongst those that are educated and worse amongst those with no formal education. They are unnecessarily competitive, driven most times by greed and non exposure. This attribute is responsible for their inability to focus on what is important to them and to their career! My conclusion is that talent is not enough! There is alot to benefit from building a good and reputable character!
I laughed throughout while reading your comment because it is so true. The man is delusional o. I know him well. He brags too much and condemn other musicians as if he is the Alfa and Omega of music. LOL!!!
Youth should create their own and not wait till Obey and Sunny retire, they are still relevant and i even love their music more than the present day music.
I've listened to a few of Segun Awe's interviews and for someone who is so gifted, he appears so entitled and unforgiving. Nobody owes anyone anything. He finds it hard to give due credits and overestimates his own prowress. He should be calming down abeg. Stronghead can only carry you so far. Kudos Agbaletu 👍
Agbaman I want to suggest one thing that you bring all these living guitarists, drummers and those that played with the band leaders and it could be a way to raise fund for some of them who didn't get a thing Nigerians will pay tickets. believe
Uncle Segun, here he comes again granting interviews with the same old stories. I met him in the early 1990s in Lagos and I was immediately turned off. Why? He brags that he is the best musician around, and he condemned others too easily. Fantastic guitarist of the style he plays, but other than that, the world has moved on and he fails to realize that fact. The talent of music is like a double-edged sword. It can easily becloud your judgement of yourself, thinking you are so special; hence lacking good attitude to help you progress. And the same talent may take you high with good guidance and counsel, if you are humble enough.
What still keeps Obey and Sunny alive musically is that they update their music style to the modern day, and also using modern day musicians and instrumentalists to remain on stage. Most modern day guys are looking for quick fame and money, they couldn't endure like those old ones.
My perception of Segun Awe is one who is very brilliant, talented and says it as is from his own perspective. However, some of his comments here depict someone who has a chip on his shoulder. Maybe that’s why he has not risen beyond the level that ordinarily if he was much more level headed could have risen to. ‘Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before fall’
Segun Awe shouldn't tell anyone to retire from their business. They young musicians need mentors. They should work harder to pass the ld musicians. Lionel Richie, Steve Wonder, are still playing. Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Fatai Rollind Dollar etc played to their last days.
I love Segun Awe. Highly talented and blunt to a fault. But as an artist you gotta build avid fandom. Live play and social music is very important. The ability to do praise songs is germane to the Yoruba culture. That’s where baba Commander and baba KSA have ingratiated themselves forever.
@bodeolonilua7259 God bless you, sir. This your assertion was corroborated by KOFO WONDER on this thread that DELE ABIODUN could not compete with the greats because of his inability to do praise songs rooted in Yoruba tradition.
Don't let envy and hatred bring out the worst in you. You are not too old to play guitar but Sunny Ade is too old to sing. What an irony! If Sunny and Obey's fans still need them, who are you to say they should retire. By the way, if not for Agbaletu, who knows you.
Agbaletu, you are doing a great job. This man had not really discovered himself. His is too proud to be an entertainment musician, because he believes nobody can play guitar better than him, hence drawn himself to limitations. Instead, he go for guitar training school, where he will be training people on guitars, then he w be renowned and come to lime-light.
Segun commander is your boss don't try to say bad things about him as a guitarist what have you achieved a star without nothing stop to criticised the big stars
What has age got to do with artistic talent, enthusiasm, and performance? Nothing!!! You should be happy for him to be able to perform at his age instead of your disdain. Don't you want to age and still do what you love best? I salute this great artist!
I laughed throughout his interview with Agbaletu. As much as this interview Could be classified as brilliant,Segun Awe is so full of himself. No man is an island,no man is endowed with all wisdom in this life. Let Segun give honour to whom it's due. There's no competition now, they're entertaining nowadays
Baba Awe is spot on guitar riddim and creativity,it forms the base and direction of music in the 70s compared to guitars of the 80s which has more talking drums and Hawaiian overshadowing the Guitar works for Chief Commander albums of the 80's.
I can sight arrogancy and envy here..Why telling a living legend to retire? If you're not doing well in your choosing career, that's your destiny. Abeg Park well
You're well known as a good guitarist when you played with Commander Ebenezer Obey...You danced well on stage when you're playing guitar on the stage with Obey's Inter reformers band
Segun Awe is talented/intelligent, has integrity & honest. Many will agree but won’t publicly declare it. Africa/Nigeria has issue of ‘sit tight’ leaders. At some point; people should take the back seat & nurture fresh minds to move things forward.
Nigerians all in the name of likeness of their favourite they take offence on other people's opinion segun awe is a professional guitarist and knows is worth if u know ur worth and good at what u do people will see it as pride.
Maybe, but shouldn't that alsonapply to Segun Awe ? If a Man is comfortable and healthy in old age to continue what he loves and has done all hus life, why not ?
Segun Awe, please stop trying to force your seniors into retirement musically. Remember, what goes round comes around. I can as well safely say that you are out of tune with what is in vogue in terms of nowadays music. The sky is wide enough to accommodate all kinds of birds that are ready and willing to fly.
@kobewms The child born yesterday knows KSA has a signature tune. That you don't know about that beats my imagination. Search on youtube, and there is a gentleman who teaches people how to play KSA style. The segun Awe guy has a beef with the greats. He is too hot-headed and like throwing tantrums. Check out SYNCRO SYSTEM album 1983, which was nominated for a grammy. KSA played the lead guitar like no one else. Segun Awe should eat the humble pie, the greats are not in his league. So long, brother.
@@Zendaya63 True! That person obviously doesn't listen to Obey and KSA's lead on their songs. There's a particular note KSA drops just when he's about to switch tunes from a drum or Hawaiian solo and Obey's mastery of the guitar has been notable since his time with Fatai Rolling Dollar. Who has Segun trained or mentored with such talent that he carries? He's still holding on to over 40 years of grudges. Na wa
*Segun should be mindful of his utterances, not because today or tomorrow but all tomorrows* *He should stop blowing his trunmphert himself* *He displayed arrogancy, and pride in his body language* *And adult doesn't talk too much*
Mr Segun go and work like sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey so don't tell the old musicians to quite stage you nust work very hard to achieve what they have achieved
Dele Adeyanju is a brilliant questionaire, he said one can teach you how to play but that does not mean you should be doing the say style with the Person that taught you . which Mr Awe even agreed
This guy is a lazy man if you are that good you will not asked people like Sunny Ade to retire it is your ability that will make him to retire. There won't be juju music anymore without Sunny Ade.The guy music is full of new investion with people like you talking like old centuries man.Sunny Ade play on you are the best.
Why castigate Mr. Awe for advising the juju music veterans to retire? There is time for everything under the sun. If they refuse to retire, their bodies will force into retirement compulsorily. It is simply natural.
Fantastic & very educative.. dis will be one of Agbaletu best interview, it focuses mostly on d subject "innovation of guitar in Juju music"... How l wish d show concentrate more on dis sort of subject.
To improve on any profession is dependent on individual. Some people are lazy that they resolve to remain on the level they are. Even if their children take over from them, they inspired by themselves to do it before their parents assist them financially and otherwise
Sorry, younger people should work hard to gain grounds ... In other countries bith the young and old live in the same space. its the works that they do that make them the best
Take it or you leave it, Segun Awe is a fantastic instrumantalist. He has carved a nitch for himself and contributed immensely to the duo of our revered juju musicians. He's free to express his opinion. Money is not everything. Hes is a egend too
Dele Agbaletu please intervene in the matter between Obey and Segun Awe because there is hidden annimousity between the duo.Segun Awe should be careful as He is nursing grudge.
There was only one thing i'm agreed with Segun Awe statement that obey was stingy man. How come Obey, who was a millionaire, gave only #500.00 as a laucher?
No one wants anyone to be like him in life, the only Person that does not get angry with anyone that copy him is a mad Person. No one want anyone to be like him in life.$475,000 is a hell of money then
Pride precludes Segun Awe from excelling in music... He should NOT blame Commander and KSA for his failure!!! He's a No-It-All and a joy killer. On guitar, I would score him 25%. He makes noise too much. In fact, Segun needs serious deliverance. Merely looking at him one could tell he's possessed with evil spirits......
He is a fantastic guitarist to be sincere but I belief his problem is luck. Not every musician will excell in the music industry just as other proffessions. What okocha did with football in life ought to place him in the ranks of notable players round the world.okocha is not poor but am very sure that if he is a whiteman they may do his statue like that of maradona in napoli. Uncle Awe should not force himself to be at the top because luck has a vital role to play in everything we do in life
Benson Idonije is bn idiomatic and sort of encouragement to, you *Your utterances, to your seniors in the musical world are crude and rude* *It's not part of our cultural heritage*
Segun Awe is rude, crude, proud and unexposed. He has no respect for his ogas in the musical world. Am not sure he is of a good background as a yoruba guy. He is frustrated.
This guy is not a serious guy, if you are so good you will take over from Sunny Ade not asking him to leave the stage for you. Even Shina Peter and Sikiru Ayinde tried they don't last. Trust me Sunny Ade is just too good he has supersede any musician in Nigeria even in Africa, That is because he is always research and perform excellently anytime. Without Sunny Ade no Juju music in Nigeria, Do you know he is the only musician in Nigeria that is in Hard Rock ,first Nigeria to be nominated for gramme awards twice, first Nigeria musician to play in Hollywood twice, have heard about Sunny Ade day in Atlanta USA. You look like ancient man and you think you are young.
I was subsumed. This is thorough lecture. Two intelligent, gifted, talented minds gave a treat.
More inspiration.

It's a delight listening to Mr.Segun Awe.
One has to just let go of the past, move forward in forgiveness and love. Our success is based on our walking in love as said by the holy book
This man is so good. Oh my goodness
Why tell someone to retire when people still call him to perform in their parties. No retirement age in music
Himself should retire considering his age
It’s coming from bitterness
You are largely right but the issue is that KSA in particular is now a terrible shadow of himself. I once commented to one of his shows as being like an old boxer who is punch drunk and having one more fight for money. His band boys are regularly out of synch with him and are so far below par of his original band members. It's sad.
@@joshuaoajide You've clearly missed the important point Mr Awe made.
This man ( Segun Awe) is a wizard. He is very skillful
Segun Awe is a born guitarist.... great guy. ❤
LOL!!!
@@OludareOlateju You are right, man. This set of musicians are so entitled, greedy and delusional.
Pride.
Why should he retired , it keeps them healthy .
Agbaman I want to suggest one thing that you bring all these living guitarists, drummers and those that played with the band leaders and it could be a way to raise fund for some of them who didn't get a thing Nigerians will pay tickets. believe
New DIMENSION.
God bless the two of you🙏
Oga Segun, the sky is big for everyone to fly.
Segun Awe...living legend
Thank you.
My thoughts exactly. He needs to take it easy
Agbaletu you're just growing from the roots to the fruits... God will continue to strengthen you.
Mr Awe, your music doesn't have signature.
Etanoid ni Segun Awe nlo. If people like the old artists why should they retire.
To be honest , this man is so good.
Sir shina was very hard working musician that was y he made it to the top.
Awe ni fun ni. Eyin ara mi. Obey ati sunny no dey retire. I love them both
Segun commander is your boss don't try to say bad things about him as a guitarist what have you achieved a star without nothing stop to criticised the big stars
The stupid man followed agbaletu to beg commander but till now still saying trash about d king commander
What has age got to do with artistic talent, enthusiasm, and performance? Nothing!!! You should be happy for him to be able to perform at his age instead of your disdain. Don't you want to age and still do what you love best? I salute this great artist!
This man would have been great if he could give credit to other his instrumentalist members instead of giving everything to himself.
He's is Donald Trump of Guitarists. Every credit goes to him
I laughed throughout his interview with Agbaletu.
Special mention to Celebration and Precious Gift album. The signature tune was solid.
I never knew music was this complex.
I can sight arrogancy and envy here..Why telling a living legend to retire? If you're not doing well in your choosing career, that's your destiny. Abeg Park well
"omode toni toun ba'dagba ori awo loun ma ma je, ori awo yen Koni je kodagba" check yourself Mr man!!
I noticed that uncle Segun didn't mention Ohiri when he was naming top guitarists. I'm presuming that just skipped his mind.
I believe Wasiu Kwam 1 used the Ohiri signature variation in hi Orin d'owo track.
Olusegun omo Awe
Would have been so great .... He needs to be humble. What a talent he is... But he pretty disrespectful.
You're well known as a good guitarist when you played with Commander Ebenezer Obey...You danced well on stage when you're playing guitar on the stage with Obey's Inter reformers band
Self praises kill this man, no one has ever talked about him.
People knew o believe me
Thank you Sir Dele. May you never go weary. No evil shall befall you in Jesus's name
*Segun should mind his utterances,Adult doesn't talk too much*
*He should be considerate of not only today or tomorrow but all tomorrows *
Segun Awe is talented/intelligent, has integrity & honest. Many will agree but won’t publicly declare it. Africa/Nigeria has issue of ‘sit tight’ leaders. At some point; people should take the back seat & nurture fresh minds to move things forward.
Nigerians all in the name of likeness of their favourite they take offence on other people's opinion segun awe is a professional guitarist and knows is worth if u know ur worth and good at what u do people will see it as pride.
Very true.
Signature simply means personalized creativity
Maybe, but shouldn't that alsonapply to Segun Awe ?
If a Man is comfortable and healthy in old age to continue what he loves and has done all hus life, why not ?
Thanks
Segun Awe, please stop trying to force your seniors into retirement musically. Remember, what goes round comes around. I can as well safely say that you are out of tune with what is in vogue in terms of nowadays music. The sky is wide enough to accommodate all kinds of birds that are ready and willing to fly.
Thank you for this
The guitarist 🎸 signature mentioned by uncle Segun is very valid. I wonder what Obey, KSA and Dele Abiodun signatures are?
Na wa
Commander is my best musician till today to people complaining of act of stinginess
*Segun should be mindful of his utterances, not because today or
tomorrow but all tomorrows*
*He should stop blowing his trunmphert himself*
*He displayed arrogancy, and pride in his body language*
*And adult doesn't talk too much*
Mr Segun go and work like sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey so don't tell the old musicians to quite stage you nust work very hard to achieve what they have achieved
Exactly my thought!
Must he retired before your can prove your worth?
Bunch of lazy people
To improve on any profession is dependent on individual. Some people are lazy that they resolve to remain on the level they are. Even if their children take over from them, they inspired by themselves to do it before their parents assist them financially and otherwise
I like his confidence
Ekiti man dont hide words in between their tongue. Say it as it this. We are not ngbati ngbati........
So Segun Awe feels threatened by a 77-year old? That’s a compliment!
...ema fenu retirement pe sunny omo alade mo👍💯☑️
Sorry, younger people should work hard to gain grounds ...
In other countries bith the young and old live in the same space. its the works that they do that make them the best
Segun awe is a rude person, Ebenezer obey and Sunny ade are your fathers, never you put them down anymore. Show respect to your elders.
Segun Awe dey try o
I don't know why they usually skip TUNDE KING WHO IS THE FOUNDER OF JUJU MUSIC
Uncle Awe should not force himself to be at the top because luck has a vital role to play in everything we do in life
MR SEGUN AWE FAILED TO UNDERSTAND THAT OLD AGE DO AFFECT EVERYTHING. KUDOS TO OBEY AND SUNNY . WE HAVE THE LIKES OF MEGA 99 ' NOW AND CO
Benson Idonije is bn idiomatic and sort of encouragement to, you
*Your utterances, to your seniors in the musical world are crude and rude*
*It's not part of our cultural heritage*
Segun Awe is rude, crude, proud and unexposed. He has no respect for his ogas in the musical world. Am not sure he is of a good background as a yoruba guy. He is frustrated.
Nightingale actually predates I. K. Dairo
Not sure if he can define “signature “
