    Zen Master Eido Roshi was the first person to introduce Zen Buddhism to New York, Manhattan, during the 1960s. Today he is 80+ years old and talks to Soul Sessions founder Eloise about Buddhist philosophy, karma, how to heal our emotional pains and more.

    I've started meditation about a month ago and love it. Probably gonna do it for the rest of my life. It felt silly at first, but it really does help me relax and focus better throughout the day. Also I'm not sure if this happens to others (I hope it does), but my head just feels stronger and better than before, almost as if it got a massage. It's a great feeling.

    I hv been meditating for last 5 years.. And figuring out my own style was not easy at the beginning.. Silly feeling, criticizing myself for letting in intrusive thoughts... Etc etc.. 1 year or so passed that way, but I never stopped.. Since then it has changed my life for good.. It makes you whole.. Relaxed about things so u can enjoy more life moment to moment.. 😇I think I hv just began.. Lots to be found about my existence. 🙏love from India

      No worries at all. If you're interested, I highly recommend seeking out a meeting with a Zen master if you can find one. It did a lot to validate this work for me because I was raised athiest and quite sceptical. Let me know if you're ever in London, UK and I could try and arrange it

    The discipline of doing it regularly...everyday make it effective. He is very clever not to use the word "benefits" because I think it's not really a benefit, but a part of natural way on how humans function...peaceful and balance.

    benefits of meditation: mental functions increase. body obeys the mind. master of discerment. increased awareness, understanding the unconscious mind or will. perceiving ultimate reality. peace. joy. tranquility. etc etc etc...

    I had the privilege of attending a zen talk with Master Roshi in 2005 at DBZ. I was 19 and it was a life changing weekend. Thank you for this video.

      Thats because we know Roshi isn't a name, it simply means "teacher".
      In DBZ it'd be like "Master Teacher"
      Eido is his name, now he's no zen master but they decided to put that title on him, usually we just call him Eido Roshi.

    Thank you. One essential point Eido Roshi made is at 3:50 that penetration of *the breath* into the belly as an essential part of the meditative experience. I like to think that in the centre of our body we find the centre of our soul.

      the Zen folks got that from the Taoists. If you look at Hakuin's autobiography, he admits as much. In Chinese, it is called 丹田 DanTian, the Field of Elixir. In Chinese Medicine it is called 氣海 QiHai the Sea of Qi.

      Wetdookie From the perspective of meditation you become the inner witness or observer of your thoughts and breathing and never controlling them. I underwent reiki attunements which were very powerful!

    I am same way in regard to meditation practice and effects. What he is saying in the end is that by breathing from the deepest parts of our stomachs naturally, one practices meditation

    Your thoughts will lose their power over time, they may still be there but they become teachers showing your attachment and not so much something that keeps you in fear and worry about the future or regretting the past, stay present.

    To be honest it's not so sweet process. In these Pleiades of interviews and in the process of meditation you are going to collide with some of your most deeper shadows or demons/your oldest habits and desires will erupt. And This requires very big will power and further understanding of the process + a lot of courage to challenge yourself. This videos tried to sell only the surface of this process of self-calmness and self-development. Sure there are benefits but don't expect miracles because every miracle has a price... And in fact the whole unspoken truth is that it's a very severe and demanding process and most of the monks speak about this truth only if you show them that you are worthy to be trained any further. They look calm because it's part of their enlightenment and training but in fact they have extreme levels of willpower and kinda severe nature towards anybody who is not worthy or serious enough towards the mediation as a whole. PS: I have a Zen or Chi-gun Master and on the outside is calm and joyful but on the inside he measures everything.

      I'd agree with you here. There's a lack of understanding that meditation is a process, and that that process is not a straight line. Short term it can make you feel worse, and you may have many trials to overcome, even if your overall trajectory is positive. Those who don't know this may end up very scared and frightened.

    Japanese teachings, Chinese music...
    Shakuhachi (Japanese flute) music is a better background for zen related subjects as it is THE zen instrument, endorsed by the komuso (monks of nothingness) of the Fuke sect of rinzai zen as an alternative practice to zazen.
    zazen = sitting meditation
    suizen = 'blowing' meditation

      Zen is a Japanese form of buddhism.

      It’s hard at first but you get a hang of it the more you do it. Just watch for breath fall out. Don’t force it just let it happen by itself then you start to see the results.

    The interviewer should learn to ask questions without a 30 second intro of her opinion. Ask questions.

      If the way she sees the benefits of meditation is relevant to the conversation, which it is in this case because the master has to understand what she thinks of them in order to give an objectively useful answer, why shouldn't she share her opinion? Always amazed by people who look for the wrongdoings of others rather than saying she and her cast was of use because we can hear what master Roshi has to say.

    he speaks of doing sutras but isnt zen supposed to be signless? not about signs, or sutras, but looking into your own mind and that is it.

    Er, you've unnecessarily overlaid a perfectly good interview with culturally misplaced music. The instruments being played are the zhonghu (or perhaps an erhu) matched with a guzheng (Chinese instruments used for producing traditional Chinese music) 🙄

    This guy was treated terribly. Stripped him of his pension for engaging in legal, consensual behavior that was tolerated for decades. When the winds shifted, they threw him under the bus.

      Markus Rose there is no doubt in my mind that this man is a wise and enlightened being in which one can learn a lot from but he ultimately abused his position of POWER. Instead of teaching the dharma to women (many of which may have been suffering from some form of mental illness already, as is the case with many who turn to the dharma) with compassion, love and acceptance he abused his position and made sexual advances towards them. There wouldn't be a problem if he done this in a different setting but he done so in retreats where his role was to teach and that the sole purpose was to not carry out such behaviours. I don't think he is ultimately a bad 'person' he is a human just like everyone of us, subject to emotion and ultimately a creature of habit but in order to avoid future problems involving students, predominantly women, it was paramount that he face the consequences. Teachers must teach, not abuse power.
