  • Making dry-mounts of pollen, use of a slide ringing table. I made a slide ringing table and make a dry mount with spruce pollen. Spruce trees make large amounts of pollen every few years. 2018 was such a year and much pollen collected on the ground, which I then put under the microscope. For making the slide, I used a concave slide and nail polish to glue the cover glass to the slide. The slide ringing table was made by gluing a CD on a fidget spinner.
    Microscope used: Olympus CH40
Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II

But I think that I will buy one. The DIY solution works but is a bit wobbly.

I am wondering if using UV curing mask for soldering would be better than nail polish? That way you might even be able to use oil on the slides as long as you make sure it's all sealed up correctly! (?)

Great McGuiverizing the slide and working with what's available in the field.
The pollen with bits of tarmack would make for good wall art, the mixture and contrast betwixt the two was aesthetically pleasing.

That pollen actually looks exactly like the pollen we get every year in the Spring in Klagenfurt floating the Wörthersee. This year I will have my first microscope and will also take a look at that stuff....

Thank you so much for for your fascinating videos. You have reawakened my childhood fascination with the micro world. I got my first microscope at the age of 8. I have now bought a modest little Biolam C11 microscope (quite old but in very good condition) and which gives nice clear images ,even at 600x but it is able to magnify 1000x with oil immersion, which I have not tried yet. My favorite subject is pond life, although it can be hit and miss looking for little creatures , sometimes you get lots of things, sometimes very little. But I keep hunting. Thank you again for your videos, please keep posting and inspiring.

Bloody hell. I hope there were no Hay Fever sufferers downwind from those clouds of pollen you were dispersing into the air. There's enough there to send a thousand people to the ER unable to breath or see. ;-)

I read somewhere (I think in the newspaper) that spruce pollen luckily does not cause many allergic reactions. People were indeed worried about hay fever but apparently it is not such a problem with these type of pollen.
