    As Afrikaans is a young language and there are not many Afrikaans speakers, we do not have many dialects yet, but it is always better to learn the "standard" form of a language.
    I think Annemarie is doing a great job.
    Afrikaans is one of the world's 3 youngest languages.
    It started in 1652 and graduately develloped till it became an official language of South Africa in 1925.
    The first Bibel in Afrikaans appeared in 1933.
    We do not have Afrikaans dialects in South Africa, but we have several "regional" languages.
    The most important ones are those in Namaqualand (Northern Cape province); Cape Town (Western Cape province); and the latest one is the language young people in Gauteng (especially Pretoria) speak.
    They pronounce an "a" as "au", like in "author".
    They say:"Ons prôt Ôfrikôns in Trônsvôl" (We speak Afrikaans in Transvaal).
    And they say:"Ak blaai in maai haaisie baai die sia" (I stay in my little house at the sea). The correct pronunciation is:"Ek bly in my huisie by die see".
    Dutch = Ik.
    Standard Afrikaans = Ek.
    Cape Afrikaans = Ek (something between "ik" and "ek").
    Pretoria Afrikaans = Ak (like in "accent").

      Sumari Haasbroek,
      Ongelukkig is dit so dat "eerste indrukke is blywende indrukke".
      Ek ek vandag n ding verkeerd leer, sal ek dit oor 50 jaar steeds onthou.
      Maar ek haal my hoed af vir Annemarie. Sy is n goeie onderwysseres.
      Die vraag is: Wie het haar geleer? Waarom het daardie persoon haar nie reg geleer nie.
      Luister maar na jong nuuslesers op radio en tv. Of na sepies op tv.
      Waar is daardie mense se ouers en onderwysers?
      Waarom is hulle toegelaat om so verkeerd te praat???
      Toe ek op skool was, het ons lyfstraf gekry as ons so gepraat het.
      Kyk maar na dievolgende:
      Ek = ack.
      My = maai.
      Jy = jaai.
      Hy = haai.
      Sy = saai.
      Hulle = halla.
      Julle = jalla.
      Huis = haais.
      Afrikaans = Ôfrikôns.
      Praat = prôt.
      Transvaal = Trônsvôl.
      Kaap = Kôp.
      * In die jare 1960 sou dié meisies NOOIT 'n werk by die radio en tv gekry het nie.
      Hoor maar hoe praat Gerhard Pretorius van die tv. In my tyd sou ons 6 houe op die sitvlak met n rottang gekry het as ons soos Gerhard Pretorius gepraat het.

    People from the country normally speak a better Afrikaans than those from big cities. The Afrikaners in the cities are very much influenced by English. Their pronunciation is often wrong, and they like to translate directly. They also like to use "Anglisisms".
    When a foreigner wants to learn perfect Afrikaans, go to the countryside - to towns and villages - to learn proper Afrikaans.

    People usually shorted "Dit is 'n plesier" to "plesier".
    "Goeie dag" to "dag".
    "Goeie nag" to "nag".
    "Goeie middag" to "middag".
    "Skuustog" is acceptable but "Askies or askuustog or skuus" is more commonly used.
    The pronoun "u" is usually used when talking to an old person or an important person, for example a priest. These days it's pretty outdated so stick to "Jy" unless you're speaking to a police officer or person of authority.

      Or "u" is also used to speak to someone who is older than you, (like 23, 24) and who you don't know. For e.g.: Hello, hoe gaan dit met u? (Hello, how are you, Mr., Mrs., Ms., or in a university, sir)
      or: When you meet someone who is a Christian (maybe) and older than you, (unless you are yourself a grownup) for the first time.
      Aangename kennis, hoe gaan dit met u?
      They would repy with these words:
      Goed, en met u? (of jou)
      There are also some words that you can use such as:
      Ek verstaan nie dit nie. (Note that there are two nie's)
      Or:
      Ek kon nie hoor wat jy gesê het nie, (I could not hear what you said)
