The reason of his lack of goals you mentioned in midseason was that he played as an attacking midfielder behind striker Johnny Bosman at that time. He later claimed back his role as striker because... well he was the best.

Marco van Basten was my all time favorite. I will never forget 1988 EC finals. Years later I met him near the beach, already retired. Weirdest moment in my life and as vivid as today. He's in the top of my list of heroes.

"First touch and ball control 8/10". No way. His technique was out of this world. He could do so much with a ball in a small space. His bicycle kicks and scoring ability with both legs (and head) are the result of his technical talent

I am italian and an AC Milan fan since 1980. Milan in the era of Berlusconi has been a legendary team, Sacchi's Milan by FIFA is considered the best football team of history. The champions passed in those quite 30 years were incredible, Rjikaard, Gullit, Van Basten, Baresi, Maldini, Ancelotti, Donadoni, Desailly, Boban, Savicevic, Weah, Papin, Nesta, Kaká, Schevcenko, Inzaghi, Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Pirlo, Seedorf, Rui Costa and many others. But apart all, Marco Van Basten has a special place in all the Milan's fan heart and in mine. I don't know if he is the best striker of all time and it doesn't matter, the rankings are not very significant, but surely, few other players gifted to me so many emotions. He literally danced on his feet with the ball, he was excellent with all the two feet, the killer insinct of a striker and the ability of a true number 10. When he left football at the age of 28, was the worst day for me in the football world. When I think of that day, I actually cannot hold back the tears. This is the video of the goodbye to the football by Marco Van Basten and the greetings by his fan. Fabio Capello's tears, a coach known for his rudeness, are emblematic. Grazie di tutto Marco Van Basten, Thank you for all.

In terms of greatest ever striker..I don't know but if you are talking solely about No.9's then i think Marco has a very strong case. As a kid i wondered why all the other no.9 were big, brutish lumbering types of player then i saw Marco..All technique and elegance and it completely changed my perception..Suddenly guile and technical excellence overshadowed brute strength and aerial ability.. Beauty and grace personified was Marco

Nice video once again! What a player...one of the best I've seen! it's such a shame that injuries cut his career short, when he was essentially still in his prime. Such a complete and prolific striker; he had it all: speed, shooting, skill, power, heading, two-footedness, passing, intelligence, hold-up play, movement, elegance...and he won so much in his short career with Milan, Ajax, and even the Euros with the Netherlands with an assist and an incredible goal in the final. It's a shame that he didn't get to play at the 1994 World Cup, as maybe with him (fully fit, that is), they could have done better and he could've gotten some World Cup goals, which would have added to his legacy, and might have led him to be ranked more highly among the all-time greats.

How good was Van Basten ?
No matter who he was playing against. No matter how successful they were or how good their current form was, you would be shocked if Van Basten didnt score.
    Think about it.
He was world famous, he was no surprise to any team but nobody could stop him.
When it comes to presence on the pitch, his reputation, his aura, his attitude, I can only compare it to the feeling one would get while being in a snipers sights.
    Technical.
    Clinical.
    Efficient.
    Two good feet.
    Powerful in the air.
Fast, agile & very tactically astute.
Van Basten is the epitome of a European striker.

Thanks for making a video about my youth idol and fellow dutchman Marco van Basten. Not all your statements are correct, I think you looked at the wrong sources. I know all facts and statistics, because I simply remembered them from that time. he made his debute at the age of 17 in 1982, and scored. The next season Van Basten played 20 games, mostly as substitute and scored 9 times. In 1983/84 he became the first striker of Ajax, after Wim Kieft left to Pisa. Despite he missed 8 games because he get ill (Pfeiffer) he became national league topscorer with 28 goals in 26 games. He won the silver boot as vice European topscorer. In 1984/85 he won the national league. He became topscorer again with 22 goals in 33 matches. The next season Van Basten became european topscorer with 37 goals in 26 matches. It was the season when the problems with his ankle injury started. Van Basten became for the 4th executive time topscorer in his last season at Ajax with 31 goals in 27 matches. In the European Cup winners cup final van basten scored the only and winning goal for Ajax. In 1987/88 van basten missed most of his debute season at AC Milan because of his ankle injury. At the end of the season Van Basten made his international breaktrough during EURO 88 with 3 goals against England, the 2-1 in the last minute of the semi finals against Germany and his famous volley in the finals against Russia. The next season van basten did okay in the Italian league with 19 goals in 33 matches, but he played his best matches in the European Champions League. At the end of 1988 Van Basten won his first ballon D'Or as European Player of the year. AC Milan reached the finals that season, and Van Basten scored 2 goals. He bacme the topscorer and MVP of the tournament with 10 goals in 9 matches. Despite missing 8 games because of his ankle injury van basten became Serie A topscorer the first time with 19 goals in 26 games. Art the end of 1989 van basten won his 2nd ballon D'Or. AC Milan won the European Champions Cup again. Van Basten scored 4 goals in 10 matches, and gave the assist on the winning goal of Rijkaard in the final. The next season was the least of Van Basten's time at AC Milan. He only scored 11 goals. The next season Van Basten came back strong and became for the 2nd time topscorer of the Italian league with 25 goals in 31 matches. Milan became champion. The following season Van Basten improved himself again scoring 12 goals in the first 8 league games, including 4 goals against Napoli. The same month Van Basten scored 4 goals against Gothenborg in the fist edition ot the Champions league, including a bicycle-kick. Van Basten was considered the best player of the world at that time. But than his ankle gave up. At the end of 1992 van basten won his 3th ballon D'Or and the 2nd edition of the FIFA world player of the year. In the spring of 1993, at the age of 28, van basten tried to come back in 3 matches, but his ankle couldn't holp up any more and he played his last minutes in the lost Champions league final agianst marseille.

The entirety of Holland so wished for van Basten to return with Bergkamp, Kluivert etc. The injury took a while to nationally digest. To compare him to R9 (Nazario de Lima) is a bit apples-to-papayas because there's a generational difference. Soccer took a leap in pace. And yes if you have seen R9 in real life (I did) you know he is the BOAT. Van Basten did have the height (1.88m) for headers and overhead kicks. But in his era, he was as big of a star as Zidane, R9, Maldini, no doubt. And in Holland, he remains perhaps the biggest icon after Cruyff.

    • @LightMovies
      @LightMovies 2 года назад

A Generational difference? When Ronaldo passed from Barcellona to Inter Milan, Van Basten was 31 y.o and he would still playing at the top of his carreer without the ankle injury and the retirement.
Van Basten was way better than Ronaldo, because he was not only a striker but an assist-man with a number 10 feet and vision of the pitch. In fact, in FIFA's official ranking is the 9th gratest of all time, and Ronaldo 13th.

    • @hsafootballworld1321

@@LightMovies Both Ronaldo and Van Basten careers were hampered by serious injuries.
Neither of them could fulfill their true potential.
If not for the injuries both of them would have challenged the likes of Pele, Maradona, Messi and Cruyff in the GOAT debate.
