    1:43 There's something quietly marvelous about this picture. The sheer scale of the clouds visible below, the sense of lonesome openness, the illustration of physics by the inverted shuttle - it all speaks to the majesty of space flight.

    In a tower of flame in Capsule Twelve I was there.
    I know not where they laid my bones; it could be anywhere.
    But when fire and smoke had faded, the darkness left my sight. . .
    And I found my soul in a spaceship's hull riding home on a trail of light.
    And my wings are made of tungsten, my flesh of glass and steel.
    I am the joy of Terra for the power that I wield.
    Once upon a lifetime I died a pioneer;
    Now I sing within a spaceship's heart. Does anybody hear?
    Before each morning's launch, they know that I am there.
    To the soul that warms this vessel's hull they say a silent prayer.
    I am father, ship, and spirit of the dream for which they strive.
    For I am man at the hands of man; see us rocket for the sky!
    And my wings are made of tungsten, my flesh of glass and steel.
    I am the joy of Terra for the power that I wield.
    Once upon a lifetime I died a pioneer;
    Now I sing within a spaceship's heart. Does anybody hear?
    My thunder rends the morning sky. Yes, I am here!
    Though lost to flame when I was man, now I ride her without fear.
    For I am more than man now, and man built me with pride.
    Oh, I led the way, and I lead the way, of man's future in the sky!
    And my wings are made of tungsten, my flesh of glass and steel.
    I am the joy of Terra for the power that I wield.
    Once upon a lifetime I died a pioneer;
    Now I sing within a spaceship's heart. Does anybody hear?

    @Brokenankh This is what is called 'Tuckerization'. Using a RL name, or even just the veiled personality/character of a RL friend/etc. as a character in a story.
    (I should know, it's happened to me a couple times. It's one of the perils of living with a guy who makes his living as a sci-fi/fantasy author.)

    From the Divine Intervention tape/CD, the song Fallen Angel is about the Enterprise from Star Trek III.

  • @Wrenn00
    @Wrenn00 14 лет назад +13

    @Brokenankh Ah. yeah. Actually, it's more the other way around. Fallen Angels has many slightly and more than slightly fictionalized real people in it. From both sci fi fandom, and the SCA. (Especially in and around Chicago, and the mid west.) Some of us have been around long enough to pick them out when we read it.
    For example Jenny Trout... IS Leslie Fish. But she's the only just the easiest to pick out. (That... and the 'lyrics' attributed to her songs are Leslie's. )

      Good books, but the description puts this as being a memorial to dead astronauts.

    • @EvanEdwards
      @EvanEdwards 5 лет назад +15

      It is about the three brave astronauts who died on January 27, 1967 due to a fire during a test as Apollo 1 was less than a month from launch. They suited up, entered the Apollo command capsule (capsule 012) atop the unfueled rocket, were sealed in, and the high pressure, pure oxygen breathing system engaged. An electrical fire ignited the netting and other nylon materials in the pure oxygen, resulting in an explosive fire that caused the deaths of everybody aboard.
      Apollo 1 was cancelled and everything moved slower, with several rocket tests and unmanned flights. Eventually Apollo 7 did the manned orbital mission 1 was supposed to do, and Apollo 11 put the first humans on the moon two years later. The Apollo 1 crew of Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee all died one sunny Friday afternoon moving us toward that goal, and -- as the song expresses so well -- their legacy will forever be part of our long march to the stars. The song itself is often used as a general homage to all who have given their lives in our efforts to reach space.
