As with your wonderful sailing videos, your homesteading stories leave me feeling very good inside. Informed and happy. Thanks for continuing to post this great stuff.
Cut out tires are good for growing potatoes. As the plant grows up you add a tire, fill it with more earth until at the end of the season you have a waist high+ cylinder of tubers to be harvested. Then instead of digging them up you kick over the stack of tires and pick them out. Very space efficient too.
I was a long time Free Range Sailing fan and was not sure about the change to the Free Range Living lifestyle but I have been won over by the work you two have done on the property. It is a refreshing change to see the new skills that are shown to the audience each week. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely excellent, I always feel better after watching your episodes. I remember our Dad using old tyre tread to resole our boots each winter. Keep up the great work.
We have come to expect Harrowing experiences on the Sailing videos, but were suprised to find one on "FREE RANGE LIVING!!! " (You knew some nut would have to say it!!! CHEERS from Canada!
I use the tread portion of tires to wrap my early seed starting containers. Holds in heat from the day well. Can't wait for your adventure with goats and a garden.
I think that's a great suggestion. They would be great heat sinks and we do have a few panes of glass that would fit on them too. I'll try it in winter. Thanks Scott
Good tip to sew small seeds spaced out. 🎉Buy fungicide free wallpaper paste. Put paste into an icing squeeze bag mixed with seeds. Pipe into furrows. This is wonderful for carrots which will not need thinning out. Good for all small seeds. JB
Really enjoying the series. Troy, your so handy that I bet you could make you’re own version of a seed fiddle. An early 20th century way of sowing seed. RUclips has some fine examples.
You can use the tire belts to grow sweet potatoes. Plant the sweet potatoes in one or in good soil. As the potatoes grow, add soil. You can then add the second tire and continue on. When it’s harvest time, knock the whole thing over and harvest potatoes.
Get friendly with a concretor and have him fill a couple with "overs" and set a loop of reo in. Decent weight to tie something off to.... or grow spuds in em... You guys are brilliant, sad that you're not on the water anymore but things have seasons. Your narrative and manner in dealing with and explaining things is lovely and I really appreciate the way you put forward your intentions while being respectful of others advice and thoughts. Well done you both.
You've probably already heard this, but the Mexicans (and probably others) have been making shoes out of old tires forever. Think sandals. Brilliant upcycling from before it was a thing. Granted, you may not need that many, but it's one option. I like all your creative solutions.
Hi Troy & Pascale, love watching your videos. The goats are so comical as they jump and climb around the tree. Look forward to your next episode. Take care, all the best from the UK.
The old "rag" tyre treads were handy, steal band less so. Using 13mm retic to cover the edges, I've seen them used to cover the tops of posts & rails, wrapped around trees to stop horses from chewing them, covering things that might get impacted. Surprised wire was being used, where's all your old fishing line. I built my chook coop on an old wheelbarrow (tub had rusted out) so I can maneuver it through tight spots. Have net with stakes I spread to protect them from the local cats & dogs (suburbs). Filled the tyre with foam so I don’t have to keep pumping it up. I miss the enjoyment of my farm (divorce).
we used the traditional mattress box springs. towing behind a riding mower it did a great job, with grass growing now it's a smooth and beautiful as a gulf course.
"Ramshackle Ranch"..........................Luv it and your lifestyle. May you beaut couple have heaps of wonderful living amongst all about you. Thanks for sharing again.
Not a big lizard compared to the monitor, good as a pet size. As a teen I would keep it for a while and release it. As an adult, I would do as you did. Thank you.
Hey Guys! For the tyre treads, if you are planning on planting fruit trees in the future, you could use them as a ‘weed barrier’ and whipper snipper guard while the trees become established, you could bury the tyre halfway so that weeds can’t set roots under it, and then you’ll be easily able to mulch and/or fertilise the fruit trees.
hi troy and pascal instead of the sides of the tyres try cutting the treads to make long flats put them instead of the sides it will flatten of the ground a lot more and harrows the seed more evenly you can drill and put bolts through the first pair to really spread the seed in then two more sets to finish the job cheers from the uk keep up the good work been watching you since you started free range sailing with my grandson and now take him out on my westerly Berwick 31 ft sail boat round the Essex coast Uk thanks for setting the bar its high but trying our best to follow your example cheers keep on doing what you do cheers
Loved the video, as always. You might try staggering the tire sidewalls, three then two on the centers. This may give you more thorough coverage/ distribution. How about R/C sailboat races on the pond! Thank you for allowing us all to share in your lives.
The ideas you have Troy are quite amazing.. you can make several things . With the part of tire "where the rubber meets the road!" 😊!! I'll send a few pictures an drawings of what my Granpa an Dad did... You both have settled in to running the Ramshackle Farm... Quite well.. I am truly excited for each week.. Pasquale will you do a cook book of sorts with farming advice mixed in? Your both so inspiring, an remind one to never give up on a dream or be afraid to adjust your dreams to something a lil different... 🥂 Cheers you 2 ...By the way Jet is grown from a cute puppy. To a beautiful intelligent dog!! Thanks again for sharing your lives with us... Grateful for the opportunity an wisdom shared ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Great episode 🦘😃👍 I was wondering with the chicken 🐓 coop if you put a pvc pipe cut a slot in it so it will go at the end of the roof you can catch the water 💦 and the chickens can have fresh water, and you don’t have to worry about getting a hose out .🙈🐓🐓🐓 take care.
tire treads are also good if a craft person you can make saddles or thongs because you are using tyres they will virtually never wear out just a thought
My patch of suburban back yard was sprayed then watered, then sprayed and watered for months to germinate the seeds and kill them. There's nothing you can do. It's not noticable as the patch of lawn is mowed often. It just grows back if unattended by mower, or livestock. Not being a Debbie Downer, but yeah... There's other battles to win .
Nice job as usual......thank you. We look forward to the start of the veg garden. Two years ago we put aside our sailing and planted a garden. It has been very fulfilling. Cheers!!!!
What a fantastic series this is . I love every minute - from the ham (wouldn't it be quicker to smoke it ?) to Troy's heath robinson contraptions that somehow always seem to work brilliantly , to the animals themselves, and the effects on the ground they have
Wonderful, the balm of hurt minds. Animal husbandry is something mysterious and beautiful, whether it be sleepy reptiles, docile ducks, or the gambolling goats. To live like that in relationship with other creatures is completely foreign to me and yet at the same time wholly natural. What does that tell me? Joni Mitchell said, 'Gotta get ourselves back to the Garden'. Such a relaxing half hour, thank you.
Great work on the harrow! It really does look effective! Any chance that a new cook book is in the works? I've really enjoyed the provisioning guide and boat recipes. Hope that there is a Ramshackle Ranch one planned! Wishing you both a happy Spring! Take good care!
Thanks so much Mr Kranz! I'm actually trying to finish compiling the sailing cookbook first (videos and a couple of surprises this Spring have hampered my efforts ;-) ) but I've also started writing down the homestead recipes too for another cookbook.
Great vid. Remember when Troy was reluctant to be on camera..a long time ago? Thank you both for forging ahead, continuing to share your knowledge & keeping us (faithful followers) in the loop. Headed into winter here Northeast US. Best wishes.
Im so sorry to be a party pooper as I love your videos guys but I hate to see kids riding on farm machinery. Your sour sop Troy is also called Oxalis and disturb it and you scatter dozens of bulbs from each plant. A real bugger to get rid of unless you spray..lets hope the parrots like them too..good luck. Im jumping all over the place with your videos so sorry for old and new or belated comments. May I say for a sailor you make an awesome farmer. Your ingenuity is outstanding!!!! Pascale your food knowledge is amazing too, are you going to put out a cook book which includes making your own cider, bottling etc etc..a best seller for sure. That ham was something else bet you cant wait to taste it!! Cheers from the sth west. Btw loved hearing the twitter of wrens on your walk. What a great way to start the day.
What a fantastic life you guys live . loving this homestead journey and learning so much about it...if you ever need a farm hand I only need something with wheels on to rest my head 😉
I would paint the tyre walls a dark earthy colour and plant herbs, edible flowers as a kitchen garden near the house. Or maybe double up the tyres as a garden swing for visiting kids.
Looking great you two. You're really making this farming life work for you and I'm glad that it's all coming together for you. It sure looks different from what it was when you started and I am enjoying these vids almost as much as I did the sailing vids. I sort of did the same thing you two did but sooner. I sold the boat, bought a small piece of property. We have no livestock to care for. We veggey farm, have lots of berry and cherry varieties, fruit and nut trees, and get much of our meat and fish from the abundant wildlife around us. I must admit that I miss the sailing, scuba diving, and related activities at times, but, this is a good life and I'm mostly content. This is likely why I can so easily relate to what you are doing. Keep the videos coming, which of course are of excellent quality.
At the end of the video you had a garden box. I thought maybe you could use the tires in a similar way by burying them and leaving a couple of inches above ground making 2 round garden patches you could use for herbs. Like a specialized place to grow delicate herbs and edible flowers. Like this.
You 2 have farming blood in you👍 The way you have gone about sectioning and dividing your fields works great. Amazing how your pigs contribute 👍 Sure tell your happy and loving your new life style👍 By summer and fall this coming year: should be lush crops growing and hopefully snack on the preushetta !!! Love your channel💕 Long ways from 🇨🇦 Canada.. B Deacon Manitoba Canada 🇨🇦
Wow, you two are doing great out there, great place. Do you guys miss the Sea life , much ? Silly question I guess… I missed many of your vids….been too occupied…. Troy looks odd,to me in those farm duds….Pascale the lawyer/Chef….looking great ! Thanx
I just want to say that whether you're on a boat, or at a farm, your videos contribute to my happiness in life ... love you guys
Just sooooo typically informative and interesting , as usual, looking forward to more.
Goats are natural entertainers, what fun. Fantastic video.
As with your wonderful sailing videos, your homesteading stories leave me feeling very good inside. Informed and happy. Thanks for continuing to post this great stuff.
The people that own that property couldn't have gotten better people to look after it. You guys are thriving and I love watching you do it.
An old box spring from a bed is an excellent way to even up the ground and cover seed by dragging behind you!
I bet, sounds very effective.
Huarache sandals! Bring back an old favorite! Little leather work use the tread voila!
Great job, migrating from the southern ocean to the farm.
I like the frog sounds from that boggy place in the woods
Nice work m8s thanks. Look forward to the next one.
Tire treads are used for shoe soles all over the globe.
I've even seen entire sandals made from a cut up tire.
Inspirational.... aspirational too!
Tyre treads make great sandals!

I think ever home in the world has the same Pyrex measuring jug

Yay she is pregnant, congratulations
The tread left over from your tires could be painted and look rather nice as you said used for plants of whatever choice you desire.
Really enjoy the videos.
Glad to hear it!
Idyllic. ❤
Absolutely excellent, I always feel better after watching your episodes. I remember our Dad using old tyre tread to resole our boots each winter. Keep up the great work.

South Africans make sandals with tyre treads, with inner tube straps as uppers . . . 🙂
Awesome
so much progress on the land and with the animals and processing foods, WOW!!!
I use the tread portion of tires to wrap my early seed starting containers. Holds in heat from the day well. Can't wait for your adventure with goats and a garden.

Innovative!
You can cut the treads straighten them out. And then use them as a walkway or in between rows in the garden… spike them in
Really enjoying the series.
Troy, your so handy that I bet you could make you’re own version of a seed fiddle. An early 20th century way of sowing seed. RUclips has some fine examples.
Fabricate sandals using the tread. 😁

It will be fun to watch your spring and summer during our fall and winter.

Tree wraps sound good. Sorry about the divorce. Always a disaster.
we used the traditional mattress box springs. towing behind a riding mower it did a great job, with grass growing now it's a smooth and beautiful as a gulf course.
I'd like to find one of those. I'll be keeping my eyes open.
I have seen tyres used to mound up soil for growing potato`s, the treads should do well for that.
Sandler bottoms. We're made by locals in Vietnam during the war and during US time there.
"Ramshackle Ranch"..........................Luv it and your lifestyle. May you beaut couple have heaps of wonderful living amongst all about you. Thanks for sharing again.

I hope you get many fantastic years of sailing with your grandson. What a great gift to give.
You can grow potatoes, flowers, or most things, in your tyres.
Loved the video, as always. You might try staggering the tire sidewalls, three then two on the centers. This may give you more thorough coverage/ distribution. How about R/C sailboat races on the pond! Thank you for allowing us all to share in your lives.
Yes noticed that also.
Like a chain harrow.

I think in summer they will need to have auxiliary water but for half the year that may work. In winter they can just go out and look up 😅
I’ve seen soles of shoes made from tyre treads Troy !
It's nice to watch spring in upside down land.
tire treads are also good if a craft person you can make saddles or thongs because you are using tyres they will virtually never wear out just a thought
My grandpa wired angle iron to a peace of chain link fencing to do the same thing as your tires.
I did look for some chainlink but had no luck. It seems like it would be super effective.
Sow turnips by seed over winter next year to improve soil. And good piggy food.
Will do.
You both are so lucky. What a great life. Love your videos. 💙
Guys great sound and I love the shots of fire at dusk with the sound of the Kookaburras
VERY COOL Episode!!!!!! that Place is Coming ALIVE🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍
You could make sandals from the treads. They would last a long time
A very popular suggestion
Use the tyres for raised veggie beds.
Thanks
Cheers mate!
Miss the sailing, love the farm.
This is so different from when u where sailing. I found u on You Tube sailing and i do farming myself, but i am also sailing...
My patch of suburban back yard was sprayed then watered, then sprayed and watered for months to germinate the seeds and kill them. There's nothing you can do. It's not noticable as the patch of lawn is mowed often. It just grows back if unattended by mower, or livestock.

Those hand held seed spreaders are very low in cost and would spread the seeds more evenly spaced, but since you have great help that works ok too.
What a fantastic series this is . I love every minute - from the ham (wouldn't it be quicker to smoke it ?) to Troy's heath robinson contraptions that somehow always seem to work brilliantly , to the animals themselves, and the effects on the ground they have
Thanks EiF. We did also do a brined and smoked ham for our family Christmas and yes, it is quicker but also eaten faster!
Huge difference in your pasture. Your labor is paying off..
use the ash from your fires for your compost pile
Yep, the wood chips are slightly acid so the ash does balance it.
Love the episode. Nice to see you are getting good rains, nothing in sunny California
Plant strawberrys in the tyres

Outstanding…..as per usual 👏🏻👏🏻
I am amazed by the talent you both have, whether on sea or land. Can’t wait to watch you build a rocket ship😀. Outstanding channel….
Hmmmm - free-range space travel - it has a certain ring to it . . .
I am envious! A beautiful adventure!
That ham looks better every time I see it !!
Great work on the harrow! It really does look effective!

Blackberry root has a lot of medicinal uses, check it out.
I was disappointed when you came in off the sea, but I have genuinely enjoyed adventures on Ramshackle ranch. Thank you

Surprised there were no spuds cooking in the ashes of those fires
Thanks again guys.
Make yourself a set of flip flops.
about the tire treads ...people in Africa and Asia make sandals from them by cutting the soles from the tread area of discarded tires
Nice
Good stuff folks
My whippet X is exactly the same. Great dog.
Congrats on the tractor, you needed one!

The tire tread makes a nice raised bed for flower bulbs. Seed snap dragons around the edge and they will hang over and hide the tread.
At the end of the video you had a garden box. I thought maybe you could use the tires in a similar way by burying them and leaving a couple of inches above ground making 2 round garden patches you could use for herbs. Like a specialized place to grow delicate herbs and edible flowers. Like this.
You can make excellent soles for a new pair of sandals. Added benefit is that your sandals would be radials….
We would have excellent cornering
You 2 have farming blood in you👍 The way you have gone about sectioning and dividing your fields works great. Looking forward to seeing that prosciutto in 10 months.
Looking forward to possibly seeing some honeybees out there. They would surely love all the wildflowers
Us too!
A nice fire's as mesmerizing as the sea, isn't it?
If the onion weed is the one with the triangular stem, it is edible. Haven't ventured into it myself yet, but apparently it is very palatable (in NZ)
We also have that one in the shady parts. Trimming around the trees smells like walking into a garlic market.
