    For most styles of rhythm and lead playing, I find the Dunlop Tortex 1.14 mm picks suit me best. D'Andrea makes a similar pick to that, and it works equally as well.

    i was playing with .73mm picks when i started. almost a month ago i switched to 4mm and man, what a world of difference when i was doing my sweep picking. i started a 100 day sweep picking challenge and learned alot during those 100 days. im on day 150+ (i lost count tbh 😂) and changing picks helped me a bit but technique is where its at.

    Jazz III standard red 1.38’s, Jazz III Tortex 1.14’s, Tortex standard purple 1.14’s..... sometimes I like to use Jazz III tortex .88’s....... for acoustic strumming, .73 tortex (yellow).... for bluegrass flat picking, BlueChip TP48’s and Dunlop Primetone’s of different thicknesses depending on what strings I’m using.

    I don't have big hands, but i use Jazz III XL instead of the smaller ones because i feel that when i use the smallers i have to get my hand closest to the strings and that makes my hole hand bounce in the bridge and don't let me move it freely. With the XL ones i feel like i have more milimeters of pick sticking out of my hand, so i can play from a little further away from the strings and that allows my hand, wrist motion, don't bounce again bridge and strings.

      Ive used Dunlop nylon .60mm for years on my acoustics. I like the amount of flex the pick has when strumming really fast, but it has, in my opinion, a decent amount of stiffness for when trying to pick fast bluegrass style runs. That’s just what I got used to using over the years. It’s worked for me. I use the gray ones with the grip, or the orange tortex ones.

    I have switched from a 3mm super stubby to a red jazz iii. My lead has improved, and my power chords have improved, but I think I am hitting the strings a little too hard when playing open chords,and keep catching my nail. I am going to persevere. I am wonder what the difference is between the black one you use and the red jazz iii? Have you got a link to the plectrums you use? PS. what guage do you use. I use 1.38mm

      I am currently playing with 3mm stubby pick (cheap) & I feel like I am not able to glide my pick freely over strings while alternate picking . Is that the same reason you changed your pick ?? never knew Pick matters until I started practice at little high tempo . what pick do you recommend ? I personally like to play with flat side rather than pointy side , it helps a little bit to glide over strings .

    • @TheTimeProphet
      @TheTimeProphet 3 месяца назад

      @@SameerSubedi.7I changed not because of the thickness, but because I couldn't hold the plectrum correctly because of the indent. My finger would slip into there at the wrong angle. However since using the Jazz III XL I can now keep my fingers in the correct position. I could play pretty fast with a super stubby, and play chords, but it never felt right. It took me quite a while to relearn the way I play.

    Now that I have heard Arnold Schwarzenegar talk about guitar picks, my life is official complete. lol
    Personally I love the Turtox Triangle Picks with a 0,88 - 1,14mm strength.
    Since I have very large hands, basic picks just won't work for me.
    As long as you have figured out the tip proportions which is exposed to the strings & to angle your pick slightly, you could play with almost every pick fast & controlled.
    Imo

    Can someone give me advice on why it feels like I don’t strike THROUGH the string and feels more like I’m bouncing the string? Could that have more to do with string tension? FYI I use jazz 3 when I notice this

    • @irlyheartA7X
      @irlyheartA7X Год назад +3

      Old comment but if you still struggle try giving your right hand (and pick) a certain angle. This will allow the pick to slide through the string and reduce de friction. kinda similar to the technique you would do when sweeping. Hope it makes sense

    • @asherasator
      @asherasator Год назад

      Depending on your string gauge, tuning, and the way your technique is with pick hold and angle, there are many factors. For some the pick may be too heavy and not plucking the string. The ideal goal is to have a balance between the string and pick give, because the string has to be plucked for it to vibrate. I've used all kinds of pick types and string gauges, and the best way to see what your pick is really about sonically is play it on a classical guitar with "Normal Tension" strings 28-42/43 [depending on brand]. You realize a lot about your playing and the pick tone and its capabilities.
      Back in the 80s when I was studying Jazz and Classical I found a black Jazz 3 at a music store sitting on the counter that somebody left. I played around with it and tried it with all kinds of various techniques and different holds and angles along with my main way of playing in a variety of genres. It was a unique pick at the time because of the point, shape and material [nylon and fiberglass]. I could play with practically any type of pick and have my preferences, but I took the Jazz 3 to my Jazz instructor to show it to him, and he immediately called it a "Mandolin Pick" and brushed it off. My Jazz instructor was old school, he only used Gibson celluloid tear drop wide shaped picks in medium gauge. Later I found out John McLaughlin uses black Jazz 3s, but carves into it a certain way for grip. I've turned students on to Jazz 3s when they couldn't quite get the dynamics or techniques with a normal size 351 shape pick. Some of them even went on and recorded albums with these picks. I started my daughter with a purple Tortex Jazz 3 years ago, and used to say to people jokingly "They're picks for little girls". The thing with Jazz 3s especially the small nylon ones is they just don't pluck the notes as hard or bright as a 351 shape. And you can hear the difference on a classical guitar. On electric guitar you can manipulate the sound a zillion different ways. On a classical guitar it is what it is.
      One of the main things with Jazz 3s and pointy picks in general is if you don't have the right string gauge to match the pick there's a picking imbalance that happens on top of not getting the most sonic full notes. What happens is pointy picks have a tight range alternate picking on a string, when you change strings that range is wider during the string change than the previous range on the string because of string space [whether you realize it or not]. That's also how all kinds of hybrid picking techniques developed because of space/range differences and compensate with the wrist and forearm motions mixing it all up to get notes flying fast. On a "Mandolin" the string space is narrower, so small picks work easier changing strings. It obviously can be done on guitar with "Mandolin Picks", but the right string gauge and technique comes into play. I think it's achieved easier with a 351 shape pick. So ideally my point is to have enough give between string and pick to where the amount of space alternate picking distance is about the same distance when changing strings. That's the magical sweet spot.

    I've always preferred thin or extra thin guitar picks. Currently using a 0.53 see through green with decent grip. Got it for a buck. Nk clue who makes it. I feel the thicker ones would break strings easier ( I've personally never seen this happen ). Keep up the good videos. Just found your channel the other day. I'm getting back into playing after a 14 year break. Lol.
