I own a 2 series and I think that anyone driving these cars back to back would agree that the M2 Comp is a more thrilling driver's car thanks in part to RWD and balanced weight means the Bimmer has the advantage laterally. The Audi will win any launch due to the quattro and sometimes that is a nice benefit but not sufficient to make me interested in it.
But the RS3 will put the power down in consistently in all weather conditions, and a much better daily. I drove both, bought the RS. M2 looks the best but just doesn't cut it for me.

I test drove a RS3 and hated the steering (absolutely no feel) and when I found out the front tires are wider than the rear I couldn’t run away faster. Bought the M2 Comp and very happy. New M4 on order.

Apparently to be made in Mexico and will have i4 instruments. There's quite a bit on Bimmerpost and RUclips including videos of disguised prototypes testing at the Nurburgring. Won't have the G80 snout, but neither will it have a graceful design.

The car is muted and it's fake exhaust sounds are sad. Inside is way too luxe (especially with normal seats and bland colour options). Won't comment on looks. The ZF is too smooth for a "sports car" and there's little difference between different modes. There's also been quality issues (admittedly affecting relative small batches): defective seatbelts, defective brakes, missing cameras and passenger lumbar support, door seals running paint off B pillars, missing exhaust system screws and latest S58 main bearing issue (also affecting X3/X4). Wait for an LCI if you must go there...
I like the look of the M2 but I went with the RS3 for the simple fact I don't want a car trying to kill me every time I drive it in the wet. It rains a lot in the UK. Plus my 2017 RS3 sounds way better than the M2. The main reason I bought it was for the engine.
I bought an M2 Comp, I actually kind of like that it tries to kill me in the rain (and I live in Seattle so there's plenty of rain!) To each their own though, the RS3 is a very cool car, I'd have seriously considered it if it came with a manual. No arguments with the sound either, the RS3 FOR SURE sounds significantly better. I love the sound of a good 5-banger.

I have no issue driving in the rain in mine with good Pilot Super Sports. When I had Pirellis, I actually wrecked my last BMW in the rain not even doing anything other than just driving. I was actually afraid of driving in the rain in my new one, but these Pilot Super Sports have made ALL the difference in the world, at least for me. I never have issues now.
I can't deny that the RS3 is a well refined fast hot-hatch. But when I need massive sideways and smoking tires, the RS3 would not deliver. That is why I chose the M2C as my everyday performance car. BTW, the rear seats of M2 are not that bad, they are still fairly comfy.
I picked up my M2 Comp yesterday, and will be selling my S3 tomorrow. The M2 is definitely an angry little bitch, but each car has its advantages. The M2 had a manual transmission option, which was the deciding factor for me, but the B&O stereo in the Audi is a 1000 times better, and the visibility actually seems better in the Audi too. Not to mention the interior. So I could definitely see why someone would choose the RS3. That being said, the M2 is undeniably a special car. Driving it is an experience, and the car is a head turner. In fact, it actually draws too much attention for my liking. You see people's heads turning like chickens in just about every car that goes by.
Audi had a characterful engine in the EU until the OPF arrived. RIP 5-cylinder. And in export markets, the M2 doesn't have OPFs, sounding better and more pure than the UK model here.
Audi is better built, but upfront indeed a plain boring dashboard if you're not appealed by the video gaming capability of the virtual cockpit. One car here is for kids, the other for purists.
Unfortunately we no longer receive the RS3 as of the 2023 edition here in Canada. It looks like I'll be switching over to BMW for the new M2. Great review mate.

Ill be honest these guys dont know how to drive. At autocross and track days, with mich mps4s i was ahead of M2 on cup2. You just need to know to how trail brake... Look at speed academy miata race to see journalist show us their awesome skills...
Totally agree. Drove both bought the sedan rs3 sports pack mag ride exhaust etc. Interior is nothing like "a standard a3" and the all weather capability kills the M2 as a daily.

Would be great to see Dan compare the M2 Competition with the Toyota Supra - yes, the M2C is more powerful and more practical, but perhaps the Supra's more superior chassis designed on a sportscar platform might make it the pick of the bunch.
Supra and M2C are surprisingly close against the stopwatch. But, aside from being a fake Japanese hero car, the M2C's S55 engine will keep on pulling long after the B58 runs out of puff. And, ironically, the M2 is the more practical (4 seats and usable trunk) and real (no fake vents or heritage - German BMW not Austrian Magna-Steyr).

How can you pick the M2 comp and not even choose the Rs3 sport pack options? With mag ride it kills the M2 for ride quality..also the handling of the Rs3 is brilliant with the staggered setup. "Lifeless" handling lol. What is poor about the Rs is the gear box tune. Terrible stock TCU, in D it changes to early meaning you can be sat in 7th gear at only 4k, always in the wrong gear approaching a roundabout, S mode down shifts too early etc. Etc.
They're direct competitors. They cost similar money and are more or less the same size. The entire 1-series/2-series lineup very closely matches the A3 lineup in terms of price and engine options. People are absolutely cross-shopping these cars.

Honestly, I see 100 times more M2 'fan boys' out there. Every M2 driver I know are young and care just about performance and sound. That's fine, but the RS3 is a different kind of car, nicer interior, quieter, more practical. It appeals to the more mature driver. Both are great cars. RS3 better all around car. M2 better pure sports car enthusiast's choice, IMO.

It depends on your needs. It's a silly comparison to be honest; a RWD car with an optional manual, vs a people mover suited for typical London weather.
Why is this question even being asked ? Audi is well known for having the engine too far forward, and under-steering into oblivion, numb steering feel, and not great damping either. The M2 Comp is levels above in every way. The 'sound' of the car is personal preference and just because you (Dan Prosser) likes the Audi, does not make it 'better', because many others (including me) prefer the BMW sound. If I want to sound like a chav I can just put a different exhaust on, thanks. I have the best of both worlds, a remapped 2017 auto M140i, which is faster than the RS3, and still has the practicality of a hatchback, and what's more, I saved £30grand lol !
Nice different angle, but an m140i is as stiff as a spaghetti relative to a real M model 😉 Tune that B58 all you want, it will still ultimately run out of puff and capability.
@@nessuno5403 I can't disagree with the M140i being a bit wobbly, it is. But, as a daily driver, which it spends 95% of it's time doing, it's very comfortable. I could obviously fit underbody braces, strut brace, solid subframe mounts, and make it super stiff, and handle like a boss around a track, but that would ruin it as a daily. I'm not sure I agree with your engine comment. It is a very tuneable engine, some people have managed over 1000bhp from it. Mine is running at 455bhp/634nm and there isn't many other cars I come across that can stay with it. Obviously expensive supercar's will, but for the £22,000 it has cost me to buy & tune, nothing comes close. If I wanted a track day car, I wouldn't use an M140i. Probably have an old Elise or Caterham if my budget would stretch. Could you suggest another car which matches the power of mine, does 184mph flat out, yet is practical and docile driving around town, for 22 grand please ?

Look, Audi is known for good cabins, but not in the A3 class. That particular cabin looks utilitarian and that includes the RS3. Let's give credit though, the RS3 is very fast and a bunch of fun. At the end of the day, the BMW is the heroic one and will garner the most respect.

The 'sound' of the car is personal preference and just because you (Dan Prosser) likes the Audi, does not make it 'better', because many others (including me) prefer the BMW sound.
If I want to sound like a chav I can just put a different exhaust on, thanks.
I have the best of both worlds, a remapped 2017 auto M140i, which is faster than the RS3, and still has the practicality of a hatchback, and what's more, I saved £30grand lol !
Nice different angle, but an m140i is as stiff as a spaghetti relative to a real M model 😉 Tune that B58 all you want, it will still ultimately run out of puff and capability.
@@nessuno5403 I can't disagree with the M140i being a bit wobbly, it is.
But, as a daily driver, which it spends 95% of it's time doing, it's very comfortable.
I could obviously fit underbody braces, strut brace, solid subframe mounts, and make it super stiff, and handle like a boss around a track, but that would ruin it as a daily.
I'm not sure I agree with your engine comment. It is a very tuneable engine, some people have managed over 1000bhp from it.
Mine is running at 455bhp/634nm and there isn't many other cars I come across that can stay with it. Obviously expensive supercar's will, but for the £22,000 it has cost me to buy & tune, nothing comes close.
If I wanted a track day car, I wouldn't use an M140i. Probably have an old Elise or Caterham if my budget would stretch.
Could you suggest another car which matches the power of mine, does 184mph flat out, yet is practical and docile driving around town, for 22 grand please ?

RWD will be spinning on all wet roads and during winter. Plus imo the 5 pot is a better engine overall. The M2 sounds like sh!t too

Look, Audi is known for good cabins, but not in the A3 class. That particular cabin looks utilitarian and that includes the RS3. Let's give credit though, the RS3 is very fast and a bunch of fun. At the end of the day, the BMW is the heroic one and will garner the most respect.
M2 will always be better b/c it has a manual option. Automatic bullshit is a bore and will forever be as such
