    This is the most helpful video on changing out the parts on this Rialto model. Thanks for it. Trying to get the fill valve on with the gasket at full size is almost impossible. Compressing and putting the gasket in the freezer is brilliant. A heads-up for those following these instructions: Even with the gasket reduced in width, it's a challenge getting the plastic unit on. The gasket will only stay frozen for so long before it expands to full size. I failed the first time. What I had to do (after putting the gasket back in the freezer) was rehearse how to put the plastic unit on without the gasket. In my case, it took tilting it forward so it would slip into the grooves and I could rotate it left. Once I got the hang of it, I did it over and over 10-15 times before I was confident I could do it quickly once I put the frozen gasket on. Even then it took a couple of tries, but finally "clicked" in and I was able to rotate the unit left to the vertical position.

    Thanks for the tip of freezing the gasket. I was unable to install this valve due to the thick gasket, but saw your video. I compressed the gasket between two wooden boards, placed it in the freezer for 4 hours and then, before it defrosted, put it back in the valve. In less than one minute I was able to push and turn it with no issues; once the water started filling up the tank, the gasket defrosted and sealed perfectly the tank. This is a brilliant trick! Thanks!

    Fully agree with most of the comments that this is the most useful video for fixing this toilet. After wasting hours trying to install Flush Valve, I awash ready to give up. Then happen to see the tip about freezing the gasket and worked like a charm. I wish Kohler would include a link to this video rather than their instructions which were totally useless. Thanks 😅

    I had to replace the same model Kohler toilet flush valve (round) and the instructions given on this video worked perfectly. I only had to freeze the foamed gasket for 2 hours and it compressed enough to allow me to insert the valve and lock it into place. Thanks for sharing and saving me some time.

    Thank you for the amazing tip……. We have been struggling w/ trying to twist it. It’s in the freezer now& we are confident that this will work,! Appreciate you taking the time to share.

    Wow. Best tutorial I have seen.
    I just needed to replace the fill valve but was able to reuse the copper water feed. Luckily, the water feed and the fill valve connections lined up perfectly.
    Thanks

    Great Idea for changing Kohler Toilet Flush valve. I struggled for quite sometime to installtheflush valve, but was not able to compress the gasket enough to install properly. After Freezing the gasket overnight, it was very easy to install the flush valve. Fantastic but simple idea. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you so much for this suggestion. My gasket is clamped between 2 pieces of 1X6, and in the freezer so far for about an hour. I need to get it done today, so I’m going to give it about 4 hours & hope that’s long enough.
    One other thing, I am NEVER going to buy this toilet again. It’s been nothing but a headache for 19 years. Had to replace the seat, flapper, fill pipe, and now the overflow/flush valve component. You cannot just go to Home Depot & get a Fluidmaster ‘universal repair kit’, this toilet is one of the 1% that needs basically all custom Kohler replacement parts. But, it’s a $500 toilet, so you’re not just going to throw it out the window which I’ve wanted to do for years, so you have to suffer through all these inconveniences. My actual biggest complaint is that the holes that are supposed to be under the bowl rim that are supposed to be where the tank empties into the bowl when you flush?? Yeah, only about half of them were drilled completely through. Mine must’ve been built on a Friday afternoon, right before closing time & Happy Hour!

    Thanks for the video. I contemplated trying compression with freezing but was too impatient so I asked a strong family member to help me. Between the two of us we were able to apply sufficient force to squeeze the gasket enough to allow us to install the part.😉

    The idea of soaking compressing and freezing the foam gasket prior installing it was a god send for me. The valve took minutes to install using this technique. I spent hours trying to install a flush valve with the Kohler gasket. This technique will work with other valve designs that use this style of gasket.Trying to physically compress and install this style of gasket will yield heart ache

      Does it have to be soaked first?? Shit, I didn’t even think of that.

      Heartache, a backache, a stiff neck and major hand cramps & sore forearms.
      This frozen gasket trick… pure genius. Koehler should include this detail in the assembly instructions.

    The "compress it and put it in the freezer" tip's a good one. I'll try it next week when the part arrives.

    That's a lot of ice cream, sir. It's time to admit you may have a problem. Maybe I can help, if there's still some ice cream left... And thanks for this solution. That gasket is making me crazy.

    Thanks it worked I didn’t compress it 1/4 in more like 3/8. Froze 4 hours had to wet it it get it to release from metal plates. It expands quickly and still had to struggle bit but I couldn’t have done it without this timely tip.

    I found iut hard also. Needs a lot of pressure to compress the gasket. What I used was 3 wood shims between the piece and back wall of reservoir. Wiggle these in place loosely and then push the shims until they exert enough pressure to compress the gasket. Voila. I needed 3 carpenter wood shims to fill the space.

    Just did this. I clamped the rubber seal to about 1/8" thick. Worked excellent. I can see why the Rialto toilet is no longer sold. Every fix on it is a hassle and parts are hard to find.

    Since we didn't have the vice set up to freeze the gasket, we cut about 3/8 of the gasket off and it worked perfectly.

    I had to soak the gasket in water squeezing and squeezing it to make if absorb water. Then I followed the instructions in the video and it went right in. I'm thinking the frozen ice kept it from expanding. I've got two more of those crummy toilets to fix.

      I’m about to do my second one of these and grateful for the gasket freezing tip. First time I tried I left it too long (no more than a couple of minutes since removing it from the freezer) before trying to install it, the gasket had expanded again and I had to refreeze it and try again the next day. Marking the positions of the tabs is also a good idea. Really poor design by Kohler. It must have looked good on paper, I guess.

    Try first using liquid dishwashing soap. If that doesn't work, try using a kitchen vacuum sealer & place sealed bag in the freezer. Then try to quickly install. be careful if using any kind of lubricant as it may break down the seal.

    • @Willie_McBride
      @Willie_McBride 2 года назад

      Probably less than an hour, since it’ll be in contact with the toilet water. I made sure nobody tried it for a few hours, but once time was up, it worked perfectly.

    You totally don’t need to put it in the freezer. Just immerse the gasket in hot water for two minutes and it flattens like a pancake when you press down on it.

    I heated a bowl of water in the microwave and then soaked the gasket in the hot water for a couple of minutes and it squeezed right in. It's too hard to compress otherwise!

      Great video, very helpful. Another suggestion that avoids freezing the casket -- put some plumber's puddy or olive oil on the gasket and then slip it over the flange, install the plush valve and then work the casket back over the flange. Bingo

    • @Willie_McBride
      @Willie_McBride 2 года назад +1

      @@mikemarkovic9998 I’m not sure this would work for this particular model. The rubber gasket actually slips onto the plastic end that twists into the back of the toilet. There are three ‘teeth’ that need to be lined up with notches that are cut into the hole for the flush valve. The issue here is that the gasket is so thick & dense, you can’t compress it enough by hand, (it’s a terrible angle) to get the plastic teeth through the notches to be able to turn it and lock it in place.

    • @Willie_McBride
      @Willie_McBride 2 года назад

      @@CROSSETTBOY Thanks for this tutorial, but I didn’t soK the gasket before I froze it. Was I supposed to? Or will clamping it dry, in between to pieces of 1X6 and leaving it in the freezer for several hours do the trick?

    • @simonspeak9288
      @simonspeak9288 2 года назад

      @@Willie_McBride I’d be surprised if the gasket absorbs water. Wouldn’t that defeat its purpose? I’m ordering the part now so will be trying this out soon! Can’t help thinking there’s got to be a better way to design reliable and efficient toilets.

    Easy to install, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxjA-hDN2m8_mi0Dg0JD8U6QiArozIAc4I and comfortable. No idea what other people were talking about when they said it was difficult to install or uncomfortable.
