Wow it's beautiful out there. Seems like those dunes would get flatter and flatter over the years hmm. The little dog cot was so cute. I thought about getting one for my dogs. The stew looked yummy. Very nice video.

Most years South Pass is the way to go. There will be snow at the head of Grapevine Cyn but should be passable The Joshua tree flats before the canyon make a decent camp spot. And if you look to the North as you drive there you'll see a BLM cabin-First Come/First Served. It may look a little wino but Ive stayed there a dozen times over the years and its pretty bombproof weather wise.

I'm more of a "North Pass" type of guy. Fuel up at Big Pine, drive up and cruise in. Done it many times in snow without issue. If there are drifts, deep snow, or you got a report like you did then the best call is to divert. Either way SVWS is wonderful.

I've camped a few times at Eureka. Glad you didn't find out from a ranger that sandboarding is not permitted on the dunes. Always good to review park regulations. Dogs need to be leashed in DVNP.
Yes, we are glad that we didn’t find out from a ranger, too. We’ve sledded on Mesquite Dunes before (which is completely permitted), so agree that it is important to review the individual regulations first. Cheers!
We’ll have to look for that one next time! We were in a designated spot, but didn’t see any signs for site numbers. Maybe they took them down for the winter?
Agree it’s always good to have a paper map! Unfortunately they don’t show current road conditions though and the conditions in DV change frequently, which makes half the fun. 🙂
