I'm a new EMT just got my first job for a private company doing interhospital transfers and was surprised by how many patients have chf. Lots of them have peripheral edema/ fluid swelling in their legs and go to the hospital for weakness/unable to walk in my experience. Haven't seen the pink frothy sputum yet but, yes rales/irregular lung sounds are common.

We just learned this, this week in my EMT class. Really helped clear up some confusion.

I remembered right and left sided CHF by associating the L in left with edema in (L)ungs

Good stuff. I have been an EMT for over 30 years and have just started teaching EMT school. You explained this very well and I will be using a lot of your techniques with my students.

Pulmonary embolism will also give you pink septum

Moreover, not only that, but most CHF patients do not present with pink sputum. That is a significantly late sign.
