- Jeffrey R. Holland, one of the twelve apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was invited to speak to the students at Harvard University. After he spoke to them they opened it up to the question and answer. Holland answers different questions about women in the church, Prop 8, and the Church's stance on politics etc... I had the opportunity to serve with Elder Holland during his time in Chile and I can truly say that he is a genuine person. During this short time I can tell you that there is an Elder Holland and there is Jeff Holland. The office of apostle holds him to the responsibility of representing the church. However, during informal settings he is a person that is very easy to talk to and there is no feeling of condescension or judgement.
I've met Mr. Holland personally and can say this...when he was with me I felt an overwhelming sense of peace.

+colorcountrykid - Supposing it is a sham, it's a sham that uplifts, purifies, inspires and brings myself and my family great peace and happiness. And, if it is a sham, then it is my view that every other religion, creed, doctrine, or even non belief that exists or has existed in the world is a sham as well. Having studied religions of many kinds for many years, I have yet to find any belief system (or system of non belief) that answers so many of life's deep questions than does the doctrine of the Mormon church. Thus, If someday I were to discover my religion is a sham, I will have no regrets because I will be no worse off than yourself or any other human being that has every walked the earth.

I used to attend as many guest speakers and discussions as I could during my own university days. Broader viewpoint and deeper understanding of issues and all that. The LDS church is greatly misunderstood. I remember my 7th grade US History teacher spreading incorrect facts to his students. Kids in elementary had wild misconceptions. Preachers in my mother's hometown would discredit the religion during their services. Media didn't bother to present facts correctly. I'm embarrassed I responded to a troll in the comments here earlier. As a scientist and person of faith, it was great to hear Elder Holland speak. I could listen to Elders Holland, David A. Bednar, and Dieter F. Uchtdorf all day.

What a fantastic question and answer session. I wish Elder Holland had repeated the questions since they were hard to hear. However, his answers were divinely inspired and confirmed my testimony of the truthfulness of his message.
Amazing how well he handles each and every question. Imagine if politicians spoke this clearly and openly about the questions posed to them. Agree or disagree with the LDS Church, you have to admit that Elder Holland excellently fielded some pretty tough questions, some of which were laced with a little antagonism.
If the LDS Church is smart, Elder Holland will be the next president of their church. He is the most genuine and well spoken out of all the twelve apostles. In my opinion, he's one of the few in the Mormon hierarchy this not a total asshole.

When he dies, the next senior apostle is "called" to be president. So yes, we know who will be next. So how do you explain the process how Brigham Young became president of the church after Joseph Smith died? What blessing to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, it is great and i am proud. In the church we are taught to abstain from tobacco, drugs, alcohol, coffee, tea and we are obeying those. We are taught to have one wife, we are taught to love one another, there are lot's people i had witnessed that changed their live when they hear the gospel, they live a happy and decent when they joined the church.
This message is for those faithful LDS trying to defend the Church. Do not waste your time debating these comments, it is just like throwing roses to pigs, they have no idea what they are talking about. Just let them drown in their hatreth and bitterness. We have better ways to surf the web where there are many sites and videos that inspire and build instead of destroying.

Tom Pearson That was not at all uncommon at that time, though it is obviously a terrible thought right now. It happened in Biblical times as well, but more importantly it happened in the early 1800s without anyone thinking twice about it because people only lived to about 38 back then, so 14 was half of a person's life. Its not an excuse, that's just the way things were, check your geneology and you're likely to find something similar in there. Marriage at 14 was pretty common at the time.

I think everything that was said was well-spoken, and respectful to the beliefs of others while still expressing his own convictions. It makes me wonder why these few detractors continue to fight so hard against something that is inherently good, doctrine aside. This church does more to care for humankind than most other churches I have had the experience of visiting or attending. Christ did not teach contention. He did not teach that the 'enlightened' should tear down the beliefs of others. It saddens me, though does not surprise me, that these few very angry people, would waste so much time kicking against the pricks.

SportsRant, have you ever read the new testament? Jesus regularly bashed on the scribes and pharisees calling them hypocrites and threatening them with damnation. Speaking critically of someone else or their religion is not an "attack". It is an exercise of free speech. Your right to religious freedom does not eliminate another person's right to free speech. Playing the victim role to silence criticism; how exactly would Christ view that? Or is the Bill of Rights just another form of "anti-Mormon" intolerance?

Prayer, studious thought, and miraculous personal experiences have always led to my personal testimoney that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true. Respectfully, I have learned very profound truths from those not of my own faith simply by listening and asking questions. Of Jeffery R Holland particularly in this video he expressed openess and respect for all the questions asked of him. Perfect man, no. An Apostle of Jesus Christ, Yes.
I truly love this apostle. He speaks from the heart and is a holy man of God. I would encourage all to listen to him and judge for yourself. God has again revealed his love in these our days. Their are plenty of anti mormons out there blinded by darkness. The Lords elect hear his voice and harden not their hearts.

Ed Decker had made the "God Makers" film exposing the workings within the Temple and other facets of our religion...And the church by changing the Endowment Ceremony...Made it impossible for Decker to be able to make a mockery of the Endowment Ceremony within the Temple, as he doesn't have a recommend to go in to see what is going on any more. The ceremony, being symbolic, is just our indoctrination into how we are supposed to get into the Celestial Kingdom.

I am curious - If that's true, then why did Joseph Smith do things contrary to established law? For example, he performed marriages without a license. Polygamy was also illegal in Illinois when he was practicing it. (source: Revised Laws of Illinois, 1833, p. 198-99). Destroying a printing press was also a crime.
How does one reconcile these things with the 12th Article of Faith - "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law"?
@@joshwilkins2353 You have to look at the doctrines he was told and taught by Christ. It was not easy, in any way, to practice polygamy. He was told to do so, didn't have the guts to tell his wife but there is no evidence that he consummated any marriage before Emma knew and ultimately accepted it. Brian Hales did over 30 years of research on polygamy in the early church and found that Joseph Smith made mistakes but nothing like committing adultery or sodomy or pedophilia. He did find mistakes and errors that Joseph made, many of which are written by Joseph himself. He even exclaimed once that he thought he had lost his soul because he had sinned against God at one point.
So obviously he made errors, but none of them were nefarious in nature or would make him unworthy to be a prophet.
The doctrines that he received were completely new, such as the temple, polygamy, among others, it was difficult doing these things while the government actively looked for ways to place him in jail. They kept him in jail for many months without trial. They murdered him, many of the early saints persecuted him, tarred and feathered him and others and still after all of this, we find that we believe in following and being subject to the law.
You don't understand that a lot of this was done on the run, from criminal government officials who went as far as to convince the U.S. government to exterminate the "Mormons."
Still, he could have never done what he did without real and lasting guidance from God and His son Jesus Christ. He made many mistakes but taught incredible truths, and his testimony of Jesus is among the most powerful you will ever hear.
He himself did nothing but proclaim Christ as our Lord and Savior. Satan doesn't want you to know that for sure.

I do understand completely all that has been written about that period in church history (having been a member myself for over 40 years) and having done extensive research using church approved sources as well as historical sources from the various places the church had members.
So if I understand you correctly, it's okay to violate the law if god tells you to do something that is contrary to the law?
Joseph Smith was not innocent in all the cases legal authorities brought against him. Were some cases flimsy on the evidence to prove Joseph guilty? Yes (it even happens today; prosecutors still create weak cases just to show their authority, etc.). However, I believe that the charges brought against Joseph that ultimately put him in Carthage Jail were justified.
He was initially charged with a charge to riot for ordering the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor. I have never been able to understand the action Joseph took in that situation. He didn't like what was going to printed, so he ordered the destruction of the press? Very visible example of violating the First Amendment.
Then, he was charged with treason against the State of Illinois by declaring martial law and ordering the Nauvoo Legion to guard Nauvoo. For that charge, I believe it could have gone either way; did he have a solid legal reason to call up the militia? No. I believe that in calling up the militia to protect Nauvoo, he was doing so in anticipation of what the State of Illinois would do (hence the charge of treason against the State of Illinois).
"There's no evidence that he consummated any marriage before Emma knew". There's also no evidence to show that he didn't consummate any marriage. And for those who claim that he didn't have intimate relations with his plural wives because there were no children born from the relationship, contraception and abortion have existed for millennia. Some women are infertile; of course no children would be born from that relationship.
If you've reached this point, I just wanted to say thank you for reading it all! Regarding all the points you made and ones I note in this reply, there were times that Joseph seemed to be threatening others to participate in polygamy. When Emma at one point protested plural marriage, I find it very convenient that Joseph "received" the revelation known as D&C 132, specifically verses 51-57. If Emma doesn't go along with what Joseph was doing, she'd be destroyed?
And how nice that in that same section Joseph is told that the lord sealed upon him his exaltation, and then the lord proceeds to threaten Emma in verses 51-57. In addition to this revelation, Joseph used another method of convincing other women to participate in plural marriage with him.
According to Brian Hales (I believe that he's the same Brian Hales you referenced), in "Encouraging Joseph Smith to Practice Plural Marriage: The Accounts of the Angel with a Drawn Sword" (pp. 55 - ), there were about twenty accounts of the angel with the drawn sword. Hales takes the position that these accounts were never corroborated, were embellished, etc.
Telling someone, especially Joseph's younger plural wives, that he Joseph would be destroyed by an angel with a drawn sword if he didn't move forward with the plural marriages plays to the conception that those women had about Joseph (i.e. I'd better do what Joseph wants; he's the prophet, and I don't want to see him destroyed if I say no). Really?
He also employed another "you should obey me because your family's salvation is at stake" with Helen Mar Kimball: "Smith gave Helen 24 hours to respond to his request. The girl consented only after Smith explained to her that it would ensure her eternal salvation, along with that of her family" (Anderson & Faulring, 1998). I thought that eternal salvation was my own to work out. Now Helen had her family's eternal salvation in her hands? If she loved her family, and there is every indication that she did, then how could she give an answer other than "yes"?
That is not how I understand the plan of salvation to work and I have a real problem with anyone in authority (much less someone who says he's a prophet of god) threatening others if I don't do what he/she wants me to do.
"Satan doesn't want you to know that for sure" - this presupposes that there is a god and therefore a satan. Is there a god? I do not know. If there is, is he/she the god that mormons believe in? How about the Muslims? Evangelical christians? Catholics?
Would a loving god issue threats to a prophet to go along with what he was ordered to do (the angel with the sword)? Would a loving god tell a teen-age girl that her and her family's salvation rests on accepting Joseph's request?
I'll end with these: 1. I cannot accept that god would be a hypocrite - "12th Article of Faith: we believe in being subject to kings...in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law" but then instruct Joseph to do something that was very clearly against the law. A more recent example is the 2015 policy about children of same-sex couples not being able to be baptized until 18 years of age, and as part of that, they have to have to move out of the home, disavow same-sex marriages and receive permission from the first presidency to get baptized.
Since the church teaches the importance of baptism as the first step on the road to salvation, and as the church teaches the eternal nature and importance of the family unit, the 2015 policy in hypocrisy at it's best. (Yes, I know that the church changed that policy a couple of years ago. If Pres. Monson was indeed a prophet of god and received that policy via revelation, I cannot accept that a loving god would do that to children and their parents. And if Pres. Monson was a prophet, why then did Pres. Nelson need to receive another revelation ending the policy?)

@@joshwilkins2353 I understand where you are coming from, many of the questions raised are from anit-LDS sources and most can be proven to be inaccurate. That does not mean Joseph was ever perfect, but that does mean that many of those stories are embellished only to attack Joseph Smith and the church, not to actually find the truth. The research is nothing but confirmation bias and not well done. Real research is showing that most of it is false... some of it is true, such as the racism in the church.
Furthermore a lot of the stories you have come from the government which was completely and utterly corrupt in charging Joseph Smith falsely and never helping them even when their members were murdered by locals. Not only this, but the United States government gave an apology to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because of the extermination order that was ordered due to corrupt state officials. So literally nothing you read about from the government time can actually be accounted as fair or accurate, but only prejudiced and illegal. The few states were absolutely wrong, evil and immoral in the way they treated the early members. So do I blame Joseph for destroying the printing press? Not a bit. Was it his best move, definitely not, but you have to understand the circumstances.
If you take into account the fact that many people were actively trying to kill and imprison Joseph Smith for no reason at all, then you would understand why many of Joseph's actions were in desperation. the trials were never fair, or according to the law, they kept him in prison for extended periods without a trial for no reason at all, and murdered many members of the church who were described as a friendly people.
The people in the area were completely immoral and evil... especially those in government. Nothing they have record of was as it seems, none of it.
Lastly, I never said it was ok to break God's laws, but way to twist my words...
I witness that Jeffrey R. Holland is one of the 12 apostles on the Earth today. He is a good man.

It's pretty clear from the comments there are disagreements as to whether the LDS church is true or not. And that really is the question. Is The Book of Mormon true, or isn't it? Did Joseph Smith see God and Jesus Christ and restore the true church on the earth or was it all a lie? Those are the big questions that need to be answered.
James, in the New Testament says "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."
The last chapter of The Book of Mormon explains how to gain that knowledge. Moroni says, "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things."
I have done what both James and Moroni said. I have asked God whether or not the LDS church is true or not and received a witness from God. I know The Book of Mormon is true and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. Did Joseph Smith make mistakes in life? Yes. Who of us hasn't? But he was chosen by God to restore the true church and saw God and Jesus Christ. And if some Joe Shmoe finds a website that "disproves" The Book of Mormon or Joseph Smith's prophetic calling they can't dissuade me from what I know. The knowledge of man is just that, imperfect and impartial knowledge. Knowledge from God is always truth.
If anybody has sincere interest or questions about the church, I would be glad to share what the Mormons truly believe or better yet, do what James and Moroni say, "ask God."

That scripture is about asking for wisdom. It has nothing to do with asking what someone is saying is true or not.
A wise person after praying would investigate the Book of Mormon's historical claims with historical means like evidence, archaeology, history, etc.
Joseph Smith didn't know how the Amerindians got there before Europeans or from where they came, so he made up his Israelite migration story up.
Smith should have told them of his day that they came from Asia if he really had prophetic and supernatural help from God. Instead Smith sent missionaries to the Lamanites ( Indians) with an erroneous book that has nothing to do with them or their origins. It's stupid really.

I completely agree that knowledge of truth is different from wisdom. Dictionary.com defines wisdom as "knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action..." So, to me this means that wisdom is not under knowledge of truth, but an understanding of how to appropriately act on that truth.
I also agree with you that historical evidence is important. I don't believe God asks us to throw all history and science out the window and jump on the illogical crazy train of spiritual learning. He wants us to use both textbooks, classrooms, and spiritual methods, etc. to learn truth. But I think it's important to remember that God knows what we sometimes don't know. Less than 200 years ago there was no scientific or historical evidence that smoking or tobacco had any negative health effects but now we know it increases your risk for coronary heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. It also damages blood vessels, increases blood pressure which can lead to blood clots and heart attack. Not to mention lung diseases (including COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis), asthma and lung cancer.
If you would have told a smoker in the early 1800's about these now common scientific facts, they would have thought you were crazy.
I don't know all the answers on the native americans and why historical evidence is contrary to what is written in The Book of Mormon but I do know that God answers prayers. I know that The Book of Mormon is true and I know that following the commandments inside it,s pages lead to true happiness. It has made all the difference in my life.

Historical evidence is contrary because the book isn't a real history (it's made up and it contains the erroneus ideas they had at that time). They believed the Indians may be lost tribes etc. They didn't know why their skin was different either.
Here comes Joseph Smith seeing an opportunity to give answers and appoint himself a new career. Smith even writes in the BofM of the later Europeans coming over. I mean come on? he knew that already? I read the BofM and it was an obvious fake to me and resembled my life's experience of religious study with various churches. I could only conclude Smith wrote of his own life and insecurity into the narratives.

When Joseph Smith supposedly was speaking to the neighbourly Lamanites, He should have told them of their origins in Siberia and their migration over beringia, instead he tried to palm off a fraudulent history on them with a book that even tells them they turned dark skinned because of their ancestral unrighteousness. Spencer Kimball spoke in conference and still expected Lamanites on conversion to LDS to change white again! How ridiculous does it have to be before members wake up? Aaron McCombs Since you are so high on the Book of Mormon I would ask you, as the missionaries do, to read the Book of Mormon. But not the current one. Read the original one from 1830 as I have. I think you will see, even after praying about it, that it is not what you were lead to believe it is.

I love the church and its teachings, and most of all, Jesus Christ, the savior of the world. To those with bitter views of the church --I understand you have an opinion, can we just put off all this rubbish arguing until the judgment day? Besides, its best to have God showing us the right way than anyone else isn't it?
What exactly is a "bitter" view of the church? And why should anyone put off "arguing" their opinion until judgement day? Mormons have religious freedom and freedom of speech. So does everyone else. One person's freedom does not supersede another person's freedom. If you believe to know the Mormon doctrine to be true, then no amount of scrutiny should threaten that; so why ask other people to stop arguing their opinions? That makes you appear to be intolerant towards opinions different than your own. And when a precedent is established, it will reach back to yourself.

I know God has always called Prophets (Amos 3:7) and is unchanging (Hebrews 13:8) and so calls Prophets today through revelation. I know Elder Holland is one of these Prophets and Apostles called in our day so we are not, "tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine" (Ephesians 4:11-14) and we are, as Ephesians 2:20 says, "built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone."

I want to add my voice as another random person on youtube to say, I desire to contribute so much of my life to Prophets of God being on the Earth today. I follow them as any followers of Prophets in the days before and after Jesus was on the Earth. People have the right to believe what brings them peace and happiness. If anyone of us wants to share that reason for peace and happiness, and our belief that God is Real then... some may hear and believe and others mock what is personal. But what is more Christ like? God has always "called Prophets"? That is so much Mormon garbage!
Every ancient prophet was known to be one when (and particularly AFTER) he had prophesied and the prophecy came true. That's it. Nothing more and nothing less. Such an observation (of a prophecy made and fulfilled) demonstrated that each of those individuals had "the gift of prophecy", as talked about in the New Testament.
The BEST illustration of this gift is seen by those who conscientiously read the story of Samuel, in the Old Testament. Samuel had the gift of prophecy from the time he was a small boy. No "ordination" there, JoeE, my boy!
But, you are right! God is unchanging (Hebrew 13:8). So, it could 'never' be as you describe: as Prophets, anciently, were not 'called'.

What he doesn't say is that the church systematically promoted, through heavy, sustained pressure on its members at the local level, a nationwide grassroots campaign using members to provide the groundwork and financing to pass legislation to block gay marriage in every state possible during the last 20 years. IT was not just in California, but in other states as well. Now that the writing is on the wall and a new generation has accepted the LGBT community the church is trying to reach out and be more welcoming for the first time, but the bottom line is that there IS no tolerance in church's written policies instructions and guidelines that is in the least bit tolerant of gay, lesbian or transgender people. Basically, their position is, give up your sexuality or leave.

Commandments aren’t the same as regulations. Commandments are strict and eternal, regulations are subject to interpretation and are changeable.

+quintana1230 Not one cent went to it. The fine paid was for services. Most was declared time by church employees or travel expenses. They General Authorities travel and it is paid by the church. If they did anything for Prop 8 they declared the travel to Prop 8. Also they produced videos and other such stuff that was by church employees. So no not one red cent went to Prop 8.
The fine wasn't for money they didn't declare it was for money they declared late by their mistake. It happens.

I was born and raised Mormon but I've graduated from the need of an organized social club that I attend regularly. I've found that Jesus is the Sun in the sky and not the savior we need to pray to. The foundation of religion plays on the weakness of humans so they can control and make money from us. Why? What religion are you apart of?

The earlier citations above concerning cains curse, was not from Brigham Young, but from John Taylor. So this is not a proof that such opinions would be scriptures. Brigham Young did clarify his message about his sermons being as good as scripture when he says that if his sermon are checked or corrected. it has always been the policy in the church that revelation needs to be checked by the 12 and be approved unanimously to be scripture, these discourses have not been checked nor approved thus.
