My mom loved this scene, it really made her smile, she grow up in this era and she was happy how well the cast pulled the dance off. Every time this scene came on she couldn't help herself but to do it with them, brought back a lot of memories for her now I have great memories of her watching this. R.I.P mom.
I was watching Hairspray one night with my mom and my niece. During one number, my mom just got up and started dancing. My niece was just tickled and I was a little in shock. My mom is not someone who would normally do that. I already loved this movie, but that made it so much better.
At that time the Madison was my brother's favorite dance; he was in jr high and i was 5 years younger. Hearing the song brought back a lot of wonderful memories of that dear guy. He would have been 80 this year. 😢
Yes! Exactly my sentiment when I dragged my mom and sis to see it in '88. I knew then that it was destined to be cinematic aberration and a mile stone in John Waters productions.
Things were way simpler in 88 not like now those were movies not like the stuff now back then people enjoyed themselves people now are so uptight and angry
I love this scene and this song SO much. This was the movie that turned me on to John Waters. I had no idea what was in store for me. But no matter what, I always come back to this.
Wayne Brasler I think that's great! I like the idea that if you know the dance moves...you're "IN". That's exactly what teens want and is more natural and organic. I came later in the 70's and it was if you had long hair and smoked pot you were "IN". Maybe I was born too late because to me learning dance moves and you're "IN" is better.
NelsonClick There's more to the story! I went to a junior college that was half black and half white. We all got along just fine because the blacks and whites had nothing to do with each other except be polite. A group of us who ran the campus paper (which, the one semester I was managing editor, got the top rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in New York City) included both blacks and whites and we worked together to get the two parts of the student body together. I won't go into how we did it, but we did do it, and that got me, a white boy, invited to dances at black home and I would bring with me friends from the suburban high school I came from. And, yes, dance and music proved a big part of bringing the walls of separation down without a great deal of drama.
Wayne Brasler That is a lot more. Thank you. Dance does that. I listen to a lot of 17th & 18th century music and specifically suites, minuets, sarabandes, etc. I realized the entire reason those were composed were to dance. The dance was the primary intent and the music was merely incidental. I wondered why and read that dancing was the only way men could interact with women that was safe and polite did not ruin a womens reputation.
NelsonClick Music truly is timeless. History truly is ever-surprising. I am in my 60th year as president of a lady singer's international fan club and just finishing 16-page issue of the magazine I do. What we've learned over the years about her worldwide impact on cultures is amazing, and something she never anticipated. At the age of 84 she is still planning new projects.
I love love love this movie! It reminds me of my aunt Kathy who passed in 2016. I watched all the good ones for the first time at her house. This one, Crybaby, Friday… so many more. 🫶🏼☺️ Thanks aunt Kathy❤
Well... John Waters actually danced at the real Corny Collins show in Baltimore. Back then it was called... "Buddy Dean". And kids really did just show up and get picked from the lines outside.
I saw the movie back in 1988 on the second night of its premier in Baltimore at the Senator on York Rd. Whenever some of the extras appeared on screen a lot of the teenagers in the theater started cheering for themselves.
Anyone know anything about the young guy with the vertically striped shirt in the thumbnail? He's a great, natural dancer and has great screen presence.
Oh how glad I am to have been there in the 60s to enjoy this dance and this type of music! In London, at the bottom of Queensgate, there was a club called The Madison Room, as I lived at the top of Queensgate, I was a regular at the club. There was a French DJ called Alain, who looked very much like the French film star Alain Delon - great days!
Glad to read there's so much love for this scene in particular and this movie in general. I saw it when it first came out. That makes me...gulp...almost 29 years older!
He has great technique and it looks even better due to his well fitting clothes - the other lads are mostly wearing looser gear and suits that flap about and makes their dancing not look as tidy.
They should show this movie in school and talk about it. It has great lessons about evils of racism, body shaming, etc. without being boring or preaching. It's a classic!
THANKS for posting, still the coolest line dance (and one of the trickiest) going. Although the Birdland step was left out of this, this is the best "version" I know of on film. They really get the moves and feel right. I used to work as a dance instructor, and had to teach this for some friends of mine getting married. Somone who originally danced on the Buddy Deane show, and taught us the missing step (the Birdland).
This is far closer to what I remember 1962 being like than the Technicolor fantasy of the musical. Plus Penny Pingelton's mother is far more menacing and off the rails than Allison Janney's.
Sidney Frederickson I like all three versions equally overall but I prefer the stage musical version where everyone lives happily ever after. Also Andrea Martin is playing Prudy in NBC's Hairspray LIVE
In case you would like to know the rest of the cast, the stars are Harvey Fierstein as Edna, Jennifer Hudson as Maybelle, Martin Short as Wilbur, Derek Hough as Corny Collins, Kristin Chenoweth as Velma, Ariana Grande as Penny, Dove Cameron as Amber, Garret Clayton as Link, Sean Hayes as Mr. Pinky, Rosie O Donnel as the Gym Teacher and introducing Maddie Ballio as Tracy.
Now this is awesome music from the 60's! The magic that began a stage and screen sensation that is Hairspray. I so would like to learn how to dance like that. Good luck to NBC with it's holiday TV broadcast of Hairspray in 2016
Somewhere in the back is yours truly... look for the redhead that was my partner. Lived in B'more for 26 years ay what I think was its height. Being in Hairspray was the most fun. Did three movies there in 10 years.
What was it like to learn all these dances and to work with the other kids on learning the steps? All you kids did such an authentic and convincing job, we really have to remind ourselves you were teenagers in the 1980s and not the 1960s.
The later musical was an OK feel-good show and movie, and made a lot of money for John Waters. But the original Hairspray was a truly subversive satire of the US of the '60s, in a way that the remake simply wasn't. Later generations who did not experience those times do not, and to be honest, really cannot understand that.

I have to say that out of all the people I've seen play Tracy, Ricki Lake is the only one who really could dance well. The other girls just did the moves, but Ricki had rhythm and style.

I watched this with my mom when it first came out. She's gone now too. Beautiful ladies indeed
What a lovely memories you have both! This movie is a heartwarming indeed.
I love this scene also bc I saw it when I was around 4 or 5 years old ❤ 😊

My mom the same thing.

Thank you for sharing that wonderful memory, it's made my day ❤️
LOVE how Tracy has the confidence to go to the front line. Not hiding in back.
Right
The whole point of the film right there
That always stuck out to me! 😍
She knew she was a star
Yeah getting between the couple lol
There is not a minute of this movie that doesn't make me smile!
I just smiled through that entire video.
Yes! Exactly my sentiment when I dragged my mom and sis to see it in '88. I knew then that it was destined to be cinematic aberration and a mile stone in John Waters productions.
It doesn't make me smile , It makes me think How should are world has become and it makes me sad

I love this scene and this song SO much. This was the movie that turned me on to John Waters. I had no idea what was in store for me. But no matter what, I always come back to this.
This films is mild compared to his earlier work
Definitely a far cry from Pink Flamingos.
I learned the Madison at a house party in St. Louis in 1959. This is the dance exactly.
Wayne Brasler I think that's great! I like the idea that if you know the dance moves...you're "IN". That's exactly what teens want and is more natural and organic. I love the movie. Rikki Lake's energy and perfect moves are so infectious - and aren't those dancers adorable?!! :)

this movie is so ridiculously good
I know that's right!!
No doubt about that!
Awww…warms my heart ❤️
It's My favorite ❤
In the 60s, dancing on the weekends was everything. I sure miss those times.
So what was this? Like the 60s version of the Cha Cha slide?
Let’s bring back The Madison. I was born in 65 but that looks like a cool dance. Love the song and the vibes from everyone.
Before it was just "Madison Time" but as soon as Tracy entered the room it was "Tracy Time." What a Queen. 👑💕
It’s the cha cha slide of the 60s lol
This felt more authentic to the 60s than the musicals (film and Broadway versions).
So true
I usually love musicals
But those ones i hate them

Agreed !
I totally agree as well. And,he was a cutie! 🥰🥰Lol!🤣
God how I remember how much I loved this Movie!
Such an iconic movie, wayyyy better than the 2007 version
Um ok
I totally agree with you!
These young adults look HAPPY!! No angry scowls. And, they make this dance look so much fun.
No fentanyl, no drive by shootings, no cell phones.
They only would scowl when doing The Stroll.
The blonde girl who was mean to Tracey was probably pissed and annoyed that she came, stood between her and Link, and showed everyone up. Lol
@@amylee8969 You think?
"Any of you know the Madison?" -Brad Majors, 1975
The original will always be the best!
Watching and hearing this makes me want to explode with joy. There is a vibe going on that makes every bit of my dark insides smile with light.

The guy on the left (his right) end of the line in the white/green/yellow vertical-stripe shirt just oozes simple-cool technique. Go Ahead!
100 percent agree. most natural dancer on the floor
He's always been my favorite to watch in this scene!
He is sooo good.
And the girl next to him with the beehive!
He has great technique and it looks even better due to his well fitting clothes - the other lads are mostly wearing looser gear and suits that flap about and makes their dancing not look as tidy.

You’re nothing but a hair hopper Tracy Turnblad! LOVE THIS.. a big strong Jackie Gleason!!!

perfectly filmed as a representation of the time and those shows

I love doing “The Madison”! As a kid I was brought up on the original version by Al Brown and the Tunetoppers! Both versions are hip though! 🥹
Loving every second of it...
Having heard Brad Majors speak of the Madison each time I watch Rocky Horror, I thought I would like to see just what he was talking about.
Great Movie and Soundtrack 🎵🎵🎵
and Link Larkin is my favourite character in this 1988 classic movie of all time
Heard this song on SOULTOWN countdown of dance music. Had to check this dance out being a linedancer. Classic linedance to me.
