- www.hitension.com Hi Tension sold over a 1/4 of a million 7" singles to reach number 12 in the Charts. The 12" version outsold the 7" version by more than double, as copies of the 7" ran out of stock. Unfortunately, the 12" was not counted towards the chart position at the time, as 12" singles were a new format. However, within months the 12" format became recognised, equally, for the count towards chart positions, to late for Hi Tension chart position
Late 70 and early 80s were the Brit funk explosion. Grateful for Hi Tension, Olympic Runners, Kandidate, Light of the World, David Joseph and Beggar and Co. They didn’t get the recognition they deserved.
This was THE sound in a little place called Thetford in Norfolk ,along with Freez etc. Tiny pub the Kings head had a disco Friday night, rammed and sweaty. Happy days.
@@cliffthefish correct. I was a teenager in a South London and Hi-Tension and the groups you mentioned were always being played. I suppose you would call it a grassroots or underground following.
That part was sad, Hi Tensions Paul Phillips brother interestingly was a member of Kandidate, and also played on occasions for the Olympic Runners..
Hi Tom 🙏🏾
They should have got more recognition
This just popped into my head for no reason today, had to look for it. Amazing song should never be forgotten ❤
Wow glad you found us 😃😍
Way ahead of its time, pure funk in its extreme quality. Bach would have loved it.
Hey Jangle thank you ☺️
Memories of Tiffany's in Purley (the place to be at the time) when these guys played this live. Those were the days when your biggest worry was when is Shame by Evelyn King gonna come out on a 12 inch!!!!!
I was there,bless the Funk.
M.O.T.
We all went wild for this track when it first came out back in the day. Those were the days when you could go pick a tune and ask the person behind the counter to play it.We got this played and danced the hell out of the place.Have still got this coveted 12 inch to this day, seriously class track
Thank You Patrick 👏, thanks for sharing you story, really appreciated 🙏🏾, at one point Island records ran out of copies🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ and people started buying the french import, that helped us fly up the charts in France 😂🤣
Why has this been lost? Genius!
They were from the UK.
This played on Yesterday Channel during a disco/boogie special on NYE 2017/2018 and I loved it!
Huge underground track that broke through. That’s what we are - superstar

This track topped the British Soul charts back in June 1978, the 2nd single release on Island records from North Londons Hi Tension, this was the track back then that made us all take notice of this band, because back then everything that was played on non commercial was from America, but Hi Tension broke the mode on Top Of The Pops
Hi J, thank you as always, ye was a great time for us and the British funk (Brit Funk) movement, as teenagers we played night and day finally getting our deal with island records, and the rest was OurStory 😂 History 🍾

Aww yes massive track, and a few others on his album 😊
The title is very misleading, no one sang on TOTP at this time. Great track though.
Yes true, but they made us re-record it specially for the program, Interesting some USA singers sang live.. it was all about the musician union making sure everyone got paid 👍
