  • A splashback is designed to protect the wall behind a sink from splashes by providing a waterproof barrier between the wall and the sink.
Splashbacks can be made from a variety of materials including glass, plastic or metal, but in most cases bathrooms will feature a tiled splashback.
The rustic bathroom in this old dairy features a decorative tiled splashback behind the vintage metal sink.
When installing the splashback, we used the Selleys White For Life system. This comprehensive range of tiling products features tile adhesive, grout, grout sealer, tile and grout cleaner and silicone sealant that have been designed to stay as brilliant and white as the tiles.
Designed with superior water, mould, soap scum and stain resistance at the point of installation, the Selleys White For Life range ensures grout stays brilliant white for longer than ever, with far less ongoing cleaning and maintenance.

    How to install the tiles
To install a tiled splashback, first attach a level ledger beam to the wall to support the tiles while they are secured to the wall.
Mix the adhesive to a thick toothpaste-like consistency using a drill and mixing paddle.
Mark the tile positions on the substrate, then spread first course of adhesive across the wall using a 5mm notched trowel. Press the tiles into the adhesive, using spacers to keep the joints even.
Repeat for each new course of tiles until all the tiles have been installed. Gently clean up any excess adhesive with a damp sponge, and leave for at least 24 hours until the adhesive has set.
    How to apply the grout
The Selleys White For Life range features ready to use grout in both a tub and caulking tube, as well as powdered grout, which we’re using for this splashback.
Use a sharp knife to rake out any excess tile adhesive from between the joints.
Mix the grout to a creamy toothpaste-like consistency, then apply it across the joints using a rubber squeegee, ensuring all joints are filled.
Carefully wash away the excess grout with a damp sponge, taking care not to rake out the joints. Burnish the joints with a gloved finger, then remove any tile supports and clean up the lower edge of the splashback.
Once the grout has dried, clean off any powdery haze with a damp cloth, and leave the grout to dry for about three days.
Apply Selleys White For Life Grout Sealer to penetrate into the grout to create waterproof and stain-resistant barrier.
Finally, seal all the corners and junctions with Selleys White For Life Silicone Sealant.
When applied as a complete system as per the package instructions, the Selleys White For Life system will resist yellowing, staining and blackening, creating a brilliant white finish that you’ll be proud of for years to come.

Trying to translate "grout" meaning in my native language and the definition is a mortar based on a binding component, isn't the "tooth paste" material you just applied considered just a joint filler? Or some kind of construction putty?
