- Singapore has been intensifying clean-up efforts along its southern coastline following an oil slick spanning more than 30km. Hundreds of workers are involved in the effort with dispersants, booms, skimmer machines, satellite imagery and more. They are racing against time to stop the spread of the oil, and ensure that one of the world's busiest global shipping hubs can return to business as soon as possible. CNA’s Arnold Gay explains in this special report how thorough the process needs to be.

but instead waited for the contractor to arrive 7 hours after the incident to deploy the booms, resulting in a total of 15 hours before the oil spill could be contained on site.
I am still afraid to utter my dissent out of self preservation nurturing
Merilions : Hit the Baltimore bridge and Blame Americans..
Karma : May i come in (Oil spill)
During a press conference on 24 June, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat explained that containment booms were to prevent further spillage, not “fence in” the spilled oil. This contradicts his 2020 statement that next-generation patrol craft could swiftly deploy booms to contain spills.
Deploying booms are no easy feat..i had 2 days of sore arms and legs after a 5hr training exercise long ago
The information you have, IF TRUE, can explain MoT performance. He needed MoEnv & Sust & MoND help, which seems strange.
Why MoHA did not perform.
Are you guys correct in your facts. Is there pressure in the cabinet to rid MoT Chee?
That will explain a lot.
😢
Who is footing for all of the oil spill cost?the cleaning and environment restoration?
The tax payers $$$$ lorz😂...continue to praise garment la😂....new citizens n PRs n foreign workers, open ur big eyes, BIG, BIG....
@@EvelynHo-y3v Dumb comment lol, everything also blame the government. The elevator takes 1 minute longer = blame government.
This will be borne fully by insurers of the vessels involved, the government will not be footing the bill. It will take time because it may involve businesses who operate along the coastline, including yacht owners who need to spend $ to clean their yachts due to the oil.
what a calamity for only 400 tons. Do you know we have over a million tons of oil stored in the jurong underground caverns? is SG really prepared?
naaaah we're not! Even Houtis have autonomous boat systems..
Does SG have a Pre-Emptive East Coast Oil Spill Plan?🤭 Or remain Re-Active given one of the worlds most busy sea route?
@@LonganLee oh yes there is the East Coast Plan!
The underground caverns are well protected, did you think that professionals building the premises would not have thought of it? Or did you think underground caverns are exposed to the elements and the contents just left out in the open?
@@jeems2066 to debunk what you said is too easy. "Well protected" means what? Can you guarantee anything? See, don't talk like this in the age of A.I. people laugh at you
No videos on the real actions?
Anziar no comments, on slippery ground.. haha
Do not worry. GOD will provide the solution. REPENT NOW and heaven awaits.
It shows the response to this incident isn’t good enough
The moral of the story, don't be greedy
This discrepancy between the MPA’s initial definitive statement on 14 June and the subsequent frantic measures to contain the spillage points to a failure in the initial response.
This situation suggests a critical gap in the MPA’s initial assessment and action, undermining their claim of having contained the spill early on.
Half, leaked? Is either the hole is pretty big...or the response is way too slow....
I ever worked on a SCDF Hazmat vehicle project....1 is located in Tuas, because of LKY great establishment planning, Tuas is where tons of heavy industries n chemical plants r....hence a Hazmat quick response vehicle is station there....that vehicle can also handle oil spill, n has plugs to seal off leakages asap....
With tat knowledge, why there's no Hazmat vehicles being deployed there on the very 1st day? 14th or even 15th June 2024? That shows how weak 4G garment is so weak....they dun even know wat does our country has....tsk tsk....continue hiding in ur gilded palace....tats how our garment "care " about our "welfare" 👏Bravo.... n stop blaming on the innocent mother nature who can't defend herself....u incompetent, 4G....😤
Can deploy AI
CNA you are using wrong type of vessel for illustration, you are using tanker for Vox Maxima and bulk carrier for Marine Honour. The location for the allision was wrong too, it's not at anchorage but Marine Honour was alongside a container ship at Pasir Panjang, not so near Sentosa. 7 hours later to lay the boom is unacceptable. The port master should be sacked! Minister for MOT must resign. This is a bloody low level mistake for a department that handle such emergencies exclusively for years. Now showing worldwide shipping community how bad MPA at handling such simple case. Chee Hong Tat should resign because he is responsible and don't run for this coming election under pap.
When SG keep voting in the same establishment party into government, soon they get so used to it that they think they will not lose even when mistakes are done. Complacency sets in and they develop an entitlement mentality. They keep shouting the "no blame" culture call and will expect you to return them back to government. SGreans deserve the government they elect.
Dont talk so much. Just clean it up
CNA, you guys need to reduce the bass of the mic for this relatively new male presenter. His voice is already very low in tone. Viewers using good 5.1 dolby surround speakers will find it very hard to hear what he is saying, too bassy.
I hope the Dutch shipping co responsible for this is made to pay for this environmental disaster. I wouldn’t be swimming in that water until I saw a water quality test with my own eyes. The chemicals used to clean up oil spills are often carcinogenic and more poisonous than the oil that was spilled. What a shameful disgrace.
*Are these workers well paid for this job ?*
The progressive increase in resources and measures suggests that the initial containment efforts of the 400-metric-ton oil spill were inadequate.
This is especially surprising since booms were part of the patrol craft’s capabilities, as indicated in its tender specs in 2019 and touted in 2020.
As for the MPA’s next-generation patrol craft, it is puzzling why booms were not put up by the MPA patrol craft, which arrived 11 minutes after the allision of the two vessels
S'poreans are very fortunate because the PAP govt is ranked the most effective in the world. ❤❤
Do u work here or pay Sg taxes?
How? 😂

Who be the Pm also no use, majority people said they choose the pap party but only getting more and more sufferings and problems from the pap party always of course.
Given the limited information available, Singaporeans can only get answers about what really transpired following the incident on 14 June through an independent review
For those who comment negatively on the approach the ministry handle, why don’t you participate in the process since you are smart.
As usual, they only have negative comments but no solution. Bird Brains are like that.
Do the people here have no voice? Even if they wish to participate, their opinions are not heard because they are not in positions of authority.
The water there is perpetually oily and smells.
Nepal must learn with sigapore .
Its good to hear that, so lesson 1 for today: Its spelt ''Singapore''
@@fidelcatsro6948 Singapoor? Sing a poor? Sin and poorahh!!!
What's important singapore became a multi-nation country, multi-nation-singapore so even with the saf soldiers also no use, it's the pap party mistakes and there's no way to u-turn back.
Surprisingly majority people said the people are the opposition themselves.
Ministers Chee HT Grace Fu n officials from MPA got alot to learn from this disaster.
It has tainted our Country natural Eco system and impacted the earnings of locals who depend on it..
What kind help be given them PM designate?
Turn to the LORD and he will provide. REPENT NOW.
How to learn from engine failure of a vessel? Your car breakdown then the Minister of Transport must fix your engine?
Chee used the word “fence-in” in the press conference to avoid directly contradicting his previous statements about containing the oil spill. But seriously, is there any difference between the two terms?
Majority people said the pap party holding all the money and own self collect own self 's highest pay etc, but only gave singaporeans a little money the pap party call helping the people.
CheeHong Tat statement on the purpose of setting up oil booms somewhat contradicts what he previously said back in 2020 when the MPA held a joint exercise to address oil spills and revealed the next-generation patrol craft of MPA - a S$12.2 million project which was designed and built by Penguin International.
Majority people said it's a matter of time before the remaining singapore reserves $ be scammed away, or by the pap party of course.
Nothing can be learned from Sg unless u want to overpay your ministers
