  • Singapore has been intensifying clean-up efforts along its southern coastline following an oil slick spanning more than 30km. Hundreds of workers are involved in the effort with dispersants, booms, skimmer machines, satellite imagery and more. They are racing against time to stop the spread of the oil, and ensure that one of the world's busiest global shipping hubs can return to business as soon as possible. CNA’s Arnold Gay explains in this special report how thorough the process needs to be.

but instead waited for the contractor to arrive 7 hours after the incident to deploy the booms, resulting in a total of 15 hours before the oil spill could be contained on site.

During a press conference on 24 June, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat explained that containment booms were to prevent further spillage, not “fence in” the spilled oil. This contradicts his 2020 statement that next-generation patrol craft could swiftly deploy booms to contain spills.

The information you have, IF TRUE, can explain MoT performance. He needed MoEnv & Sust & MoND help, which seems strange.
      Why MoHA did not perform.
Are you guys correct in your facts. Is there pressure in the cabinet to rid MoT Chee?
      That will explain a lot.

This will be borne fully by insurers of the vessels involved, the government will not be footing the bill. It will take time because it may involve businesses who operate along the coastline, including yacht owners who need to spend $ to clean their yachts due to the oil.

I ever worked on a SCDF Hazmat vehicle project....1 is located in Tuas, because of LKY great establishment planning, Tuas is where tons of heavy industries n chemical plants r....hence a Hazmat quick response vehicle is station there....that vehicle can also handle oil spill, n has plugs to seal off leakages asap....
With tat knowledge, why there's no Hazmat vehicles being deployed there on the very 1st day? 14th or even 15th June 2024? That shows how weak 4G garment is so weak....they dun even know wat does our country has....tsk tsk....continue hiding in ur gilded palace....tats how our garment "care " about our "welfare" 👏Bravo.... n stop blaming on the innocent mother nature who can't defend herself....u incompetent, 4G....😤

CNA you are using wrong type of vessel for illustration, you are using tanker for Vox Maxima and bulk carrier for Marine Honour. The location for the allision was wrong too, it's not at anchorage but Marine Honour was alongside a container ship at Pasir Panjang, not so near Sentosa. 7 hours later to lay the boom is unacceptable. The port master should be sacked! Minister for MOT must resign. This is a bloody low level mistake for a department that handle such emergencies exclusively for years. Now showing worldwide shipping community how bad MPA at handling such simple case. Chee Hong Tat should resign because he is responsible and don't run for this coming election under pap.

When SG keep voting in the same establishment party into government, soon they get so used to it that they think they will not lose even when mistakes are done. Complacency sets in and they develop an entitlement mentality. They keep shouting the "no blame" culture call and will expect you to return them back to government. SGreans deserve the government they elect.

I hope the Dutch shipping co responsible for this is made to pay for this environmental disaster. I wouldn’t be swimming in that water until I saw a water quality test with my own eyes. The chemicals used to clean up oil spills are often carcinogenic and more poisonous than the oil that was spilled. What a shameful disgrace.
