Duse, great questions, great reactions. I was in grade 9 the this album dropped, I still remember the 808 bass popping in everybody's subwoofers. good times. God bless the 808 bass
Great reaction as usual! You asked about beat break down preferences. I think it's more intricate than that. A good 32 bar song has two verses, followed by a bridge (usually 8 bars, sometimes 16, that is a significant change in sound and usually with some contrast to the earlier portion of the song). Then a 3rd verse. Depending on structure, you might put a chorus between the first two verses and after the third verse. The bridge can definitely have a "beat breakdown", but also the chorus segments can be beat breakdowns. I think it's an excellent structure to separate the verses with a chorus. It makes the song more enjoyable. Someone just dropping vocals over a beat the entire time isn't packaging the song right. That's not a song. That's a solo with accompaniment. Vocals are an instrument, and a song is comprised of various instruments. The vocals can be dominant at times, which is fine. But other instruments need to surface and be in the foreground for a while also to make it a song. Think of it like a group of people having a conversation, where each person represents an instrument. One of those people is the vocals. If they just dominate the entire time, it's just noise. If there is ebb and flow from each person representing the instruments and taking turns speaking in this "conversation", a song is being made and is a much more interesting "musical" conversation. How and when each instrument jumps into the conversation is what makes the song.
An ideal structure (and many of the Beastie Boys songs follow this): V1-Chorus-V2-Chorus-Bridge-V3-Chorus and often times with an intro and outtro added to the ends. Intergalactic is similar to this. It goes: Intro-V1-Chorus, V2-Chorus, V3-Bridge (beat drop), Chorus-Small Outtro.
