  • Hoo boy. This is probably one of the touchiest subjects to discuss for a channel such as this, but here goes. It's been nearly 5 years since we learned that the new Pokémon games wouldn't have all of the Pokémon in them. It was not the best time to be a Pokémon fan. In this video we'll briefly go over what happened, the aftermath, my personal thoughts it as well as things I wish Pokémon would try to help alleviate the sting of what this change in direction for the franchise has caused.

    I apologize for the background noise you might hear at a couple of points a way into the video. I live on a busy street, and I tried my best to edit it out, and a little bit managed to stay in.
    This was also admittedly a video I was very nervous to make. This topic either doesn't matter at all to someone, or, if you're clicking on this video, it likely matters *very much*. I think all feelings, criticisms, about this subject are valid, but let's keep it civil. Everyone has a right to enjoy or not enjoy something, after all.
    If you're reading this, hope you have a great week!

      Thanks for the video! It's very nice to hear someone else has a similar outlook and feelingson the situation. There are many types of Pokémon fans and players. We all enjoy the series in different ways, and I think it's important to address the concerns from all fans in a respectful and understanding way. Having Pokémon Home include it's own battle simulator is seriously one of the best ideas, and I'm ok with it being realized in any way. It could be a simplified version of battles, or something new completely. Anything to make it more worthwhile keeping all my Pokémon in there.

    the scope issue is not nothing, but SWSH were not at that point yet. it’s ludicrous to think that SWSH couldn’t contain the national dex, especially with reused assets. It has that capacity and more. It was intended to sell them back in DLC and i will die with that belief.

      I agree with that notion. I speculated that they'd eventually make a game, bring everyone else back via DLC, and use that as a selling point. And I WAS RIGHT... sort of. The amie/refresh/camp/picnic features would be more on point with the HOME concept, for sure.

    Commenting before watching the vid: I feel that dexit was a net negative for the single player experience, and honestly inexcusable given the resources at tPCI's disposal.
    However, I do feel that it has really spiced things up in the competitive scene, with generations now feeling more like TCG rotations, each with their own unique mechanics and movesets, and with old and new pokemon being added in the form of "expansions" via dlc.

Like you, I understand that this was inevitability, and I am also ok with it. At the same time, I really don't envy GameFreak's position in constantly balancing the old with the new. I'm grateful they've continued to support transfer of older Pokémon (it's definitely one of the features that sets them apart from other RPGs, along with the multiplayer and competitive aspects). It really can't be easy to balance all these factors when working on a new game each time.

    I don't think Dexit was ever inevitable. They could DEFINITELY fit 1000+ Pokemon into a Switch game. They were able to fit 700+ mons on a 3DS cartridge.
    Even if it isn't on the cartridge day 1, they were able to add in more of the older Pokemon through dlc updates. It wouldn't even have to be a whole expansion either. They could easily add the rest of the returning mons as wild encounters, raid events or even just for transfer for free. The problem is that Game Freak and TPC aren't willing to commit. They feel they need to immediately move on to the next games while nearly abandoning the current gen games. Despite them being the current competitive games for several years with NO meaningful updates.
    I truly feel the actual reason they cut the PokeDex is to further incentivise purchasing Pokemon HOME subscriptions. They want you to constantly pay to keep all your mons in the app rather than all in one game for free.
    Dexit will always be the WORST thing Pokemon has ever done. It shouldn't even be a controversy amongst fans. Anyone who's a Pokemon fan should voice their criticism for these decisions and attempt to fight for change, for things to return to the STANDARD of what was.

      Why wasn't it inevitable? It definitely happened way too early, but by the time they've made thousands of pokemon, implementing each and every one of those pokemon into each game new game, fixing any bugs that might've appeared because of that, checking to make sure none of them would break the competitive scene, ect would just take way too much time and use way too many resources to be worth it at some point. It was inevitable if pokemon wanted to continue to grow and evolve as a franchise, it just happened way earlier than it needed to.

    • @Jdoesstuff
      @Jdoesstuff 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@louiepikmin3184 The main series Pokemon are one of the most vital aspects to the franchise. Therefore, they deserve to have the time, people and effort to put into them. GF and TPC clearly do not give themselves that.
      Even going all the way back to the 3DS games, all the Pokemon models were very high poly and good looking. This was in attempt to future-proof themselves for future titles so that they WOULDN'T have to put as much time and effort to redo everything for each game. With technology getting bigger, better and more powerful, that also means more memory storage. Meaning containing more and more Pokemon data on future hardware shouldn't be an issue.
      It's totally possible! But GF and TPC are making poor decisions with their unreasonably tight 3 year schedules per Generation. They're also shooting themselves in the foot by having more detailed and updated models as of SV rather than keeping a simple yet stylistic art style for the games. Breaking their whole thing of raising and bonding with whatever mons you want to transfer to current games.
      Also, about competitive balancing. Official competitive rulesets have always only allowed Pokemon found in the game's regional dex for battle in the 3DS games. They could easily keep that ruleset and have outsider mons only legible for casual battling like they used to.

    The thing is, I think a lot of people would have been legitimately ok with Dexit if the new graphics/animation thing had been real.
    Like, if SwSh came with the texture/material update from S/V, that would've been something.
    Maybe just the X number of featured pokemon get slight tweaks, new punch/kick/snuggle animations, and maybe some attach points for accessories.
    I mean, the cureent gen pokemon had to get the capacity for hats and new textures just because of terastalizing, so we may see simple clothes next gen!
    Just in general, there should always be something to show for a limited dex!
    Otherwise, the number of mons should be at least closer to the pre-dexit numbers.
    It just feels so nasty to have them reduce the number of pokemon for what feels like no good reason.
    The data and models all exist in home, so its On Disc DLC-adjacent. Just sitting there, waiting for modders to add them back in, basically.

    My main issue was the Pokemon returning in first and the amount. Sword and shield had 400 Pokemon, which regardless of the amount of new Pokemon feels like a downgrade because gen 6 had 721 Pokemon, and Alola added a bunch more, as in over 800 Pokemon total were available+any that had alt forms if you transfered them in. When I heard about the dex cut, I didn't think much about what that actually meant until someone posted a list of the games pokedex online... I immediately had a big reaction to it. I remember more about that moment then my original playthrough of Shield

  • @Coaltergeist

    EDIT: I want to add this at the beginning because I feel like I came off kind of harsh in my comment; I really enjoyed your video, and honestly I feel pretty much the same way. I just personally disagree that Dexit was always going to be inevitable.
    There's not really a good reason for not including all the pokemon, that's what really annoys me.
    -it's not a model problem, the models are for themost part identical to X/Y
    -it's not a space issue, modders have been able to add older pokemon with ease
    -it's not a balance issue, since they clearly aren't worried about balance
    You say that it's untenable to continue to add more pokemon and still keep the old ones, and that Dexit was inevitable, but I honestly don't see it. They should have gone out of their way to make sure that this wasn't a problem. They added more pokemon in the DLC for the newer games, but why did they stop? When gen 8 and 9 finally ended they should have opened the floodgates and let you transfer everything you wanted, but no, they still left some out.
    I'm serious, I would really like to know why Dexit was inevitable, from a logistical standpoint. If anyone has any answers I'd be happy to hear them out

    • @louiepikmin3184
      @louiepikmin3184 5 месяцев назад +1

      Because at some point, they'd be implementing thousands of pokemon per generation, updating hundreds of models per generation, make sure to check every single pokemon and every single move to make sure none of them are broken or super unbalanced with the changes of the new games, ect. I agree that doing it in sword and shield wasn't necessary, but at some point, it was inevitable. It would've just been way too much work and that time is better spent improving the games. Once again, I agree that this shouldn't have happened now, but it was inevitable.

    • @Coaltergeist
      @Coaltergeist 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@louiepikmin3184 I addressed those points in my post; I absolutely agree that if they cared about balancing or updating the models, then yes at some point it wouldn't be feasible. I still refuse to play any mainline game without all the Pokémon.
    The excuses are simply covering for bad business practices and decision, so I will not support those with my money. This can be seen by how unoptimized both Gen 8 and 9 are, despite their cuts. Gamefreak's programming simply sucks.
    A thousand Pokémon might seem like a lot to the average person, but if they actually hired good developers and put some effort into the technical side of things, then modern and steadily improving soft- and hardware could possibly handle even millions of unique Pokémon in the future.
    Finally, if Pokémon Home was free, as long as one purchased main line game was registered with it, or if it was at least priced similarly to Bank, then it would be less of a problem, but this way you are paying them to keep several of your Mons stuck in Home. Bank wasn't made for profit, so they decided to make Home instead, instead of simply updating Bank for more platforms and with better features.

    Dexit hit me incredibly hard because I tend to view all my Pokemon as beloved pets.
    Nearly each one I have raised holds a special memory for me (Especially my HeartGold team), so to have all those fond, special memories be locked up and basically held for ransom really made me lose a TON of respect for Game Freak, TPC, and whoever else was in charge of the decision.
    I don't give two shits if my Pokemon are just '1's and 0's'...they are MY 1's and 0's that I spent an entire decade collecting and raising, and I shouldn't have to pay them MORE money just to watch them sit and rot in HOME while they potentially wait another 3-6 years to be available for the next game.
    HOME really needs a battle simulator and an Amie feature to actually make it worth the money we're paying for it. Otherwise, it feels less like a 'Home' and more like a 'Prison'. I miss being able to pet, feed, and play with all my Pokemon.

The fundamentals issue of not including all the pokemon in a series originally about "catching them all" and seeing the amount of people who defend such blatantly lazy and anticonsumer actions seriously put me off the series. Paying a whopping $30 total $60 for both or twice the price of the original game for an expansion no matter how big to include things that should have never been taken away in the first place. The expansions should have never been paid DLC and if it was any previous gen it would have (and should have continued to be) a free add on, and the mons should have been in base SwSh. The removal of Pokemon from the games has always been an inevitability, but I'm still not a fan of how small the number allowed is these days. 400 in a regional dex feels way too small, and you can feel some NPC teams re-use Pokémon, when XY had a 450 mon regional dex.
    And the final games to have all the Pokémon in them were USUM, which had 807 Pokémon in their data. Meanwhile, modern Pokémon games struggle to reach this number, even with multiple DLC additions.
    On top of all of that, Legends Arceus only had 242 Pokémon in the data, but nobody was upset by that because that game had fantastic storytelling and world building, innovative gameplay changes (compared to other Pokemon games at least), and took risks artistically and mechanically.

    I still believe Dexit was just a way to sell those extra Pokemon back via DLC, and I refuse to buy the DLC because of that. I wish Game Freak, TPC, and Creatures would just hire more people to mitigate the workload, since there's PLENTY of talented individuals out there that would love to work on the Pokemon franchise, and it's not like the series doesn't make enough money to make it worthwhile just to keep the positive vibe around the franchise rather than making people feel as though they're doing the bare minimum to get by and make maximum profit.
    Hopefully this changes in the future, but it won't until the dinosaurs at the top of each of these companies for decades. Until then, hopefully BDSP becomes a great hub for ROM hacks and giving people fantastic experiences beyond what the official games are providing.

    Funny enough I think Dexit itself somewhat heart pokemon's own bottomline in the long run.
    Think about it, back in gens 1-7 there was a reason to constantly get the new games, buy them and transfer your pokemon up through the gens. Even if you didn't care much for how the games looked, there was cool to see the monsters you raised from Gen 3 on be brought up in newer games.
    But now, each game kind of feels... separated. There isn't really a pressure to buy say, the Gen 4 remakes when there is nothing in that game that isn't in Gen 8 main games.
    Pokemon has made itself just like every other monster taming game/Rom hack, and when you actually start looking at the games subjectively, they are kind of not great (Doesn't help that the series kind of have been on a downtrend in terms of content in games since Gen 6 but that is another story)

    People REALLY need to stop blaming everything on gamefreak. The fall in quality of the games isn't because of gamefreak being "Lazy" or "Not trying hard enough;" it's because of time constraints. Each of the two teams at gamefreak only have 3 years to make a brand new game with brand new pokemon... That's it, 3 years, and a year of that is taken up by making DLC for the previous games. So it's essentially 2 years to make a brand new game. That's nowhere near enough time. Look at some Nintendo's best selling franchises on switch and look at the development times: Mario took 6 years to get a new game after Odyssey (And even then it was a different team who made the new game,) there was a 6 year gap between BotW and TotK for Zelda, a 5 year gap between splatoon 2 and 3, and hell, so many other franchises still haven't recieved a second mainline game on the switch (Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, ect.) 2 years is just simply not enough time to make a game, so lots of corners have to be cut, which has resulted in the quality of pokemon games going down. So to the "Gamefreak lazy/bad" crowd, it's not their fault, it's the fault of The Pokemon Company/Nintendo for not giving them more time or resources to work on these games. Gamefreak is doing what they can, and there's definitely some signs of good game design in the switch pokemon games, they're just all extremely rushed.
    (Also this comment wasn't directed towards you Azure, it's just for the people who blindly blame gamefreak without seeing the whole picture)

Switch games have more than enough storage to handle the models, and the majority of the models and animations ste still lazy and reused so it really wouldn't be much effort especially for soemthing on the scale of Pokémon to incorporate. It jsut sounds like making excuses for them. Maybe if game freak gets more than a year to release a game this wouldn't even be a consideration in the first place.
    Home is shit cause paying $20 a year to just allow my Pokémon to exist with 0 options for physically storing all of them is dumb especially when bank was cheaper.

      It happened way too early, but it literally was inevitable. Once the number of pokemon gets into the thousands, it'd take way too long to implement every pokemon, check for bugs, and balance each one to make sure none of them absolutely break the game or break the competitive scene. Like it shouldn't have happened now, but it had to happen at some point if pokemon actually wants to grow and evolve

    • @Magikarpador
      @Magikarpador 5 месяцев назад

      @@louiepikmin3184 i still disagree. like at any point the majority of pokemon will have been in the previous games. So a lot of it can be straight up copied over. and like if theres an issue with the scripting or whatever they could probably try to future proof some of the code specifically involving the pokemon data to make it more modular to just straight up allow copy pasting like that. From there the only thing they really need to manually update is movelists which like could be time consuming sure but on the scale of game development, not really. Everything else like the models and animations and all that doesnt need to be iterated upon every gen, definitely should be improve incrementally. like just polish up the pokemon in the regional dex and leave the transfer only as they are that gen. As for balance that's never been a super strong consideration especially looking at the state of gen IX but like if they do somehow accidentally allow a tera compatible shedinja in or whatever then like they arent shy to patching out broken stuff like with the dragon cheer and cud chew glitches,
      And like for far off futures when the numbers do get absurd like the state that game development is is might not even be recognizable and there will probably be easier ways to handle stuff.

I'll enjoy the games afterwards at some point - but I still don't even own Scarlet or Violet, the first games in the series that I haven't picked up at or close to launch. Dexit was a salt in the wound more than a primary issue for me, and more something that I felt bad for people who were *paying* for the service to bring their games forward from past games, but I still see why that would be THE REASON people would swear off or be upset. I still enjoy the game play of Pokemon as a whole, but I would argue that the issues that have cropped up recently have removed some of the 'magic' pokemon has had in the past - at least to me.

    The dexcut in its current form was unethical. Simply put they want to have their cake and eat it too. They could have done things like made all mythicals obtainable and not have things like version exclusive legendaries to lower the stakes of collecting but they didn't. They want your collection to have the value so you pay subscription but they don't want to put in the effort to give you the utilitarian benefit of being able to transfer pokemon you can't simply catch in game relatively quickly.
    If they simply opted not to make Pokémon Home: Bank users can have their sense of closure, casual fans wouldn't need to worry about transfer exclusive Pokémon and event fomo effecting more then one game, games wouldn't need to have to have similar data structures to all work with one system thus providing them with just as much freedom as other game devs.
    Also it's totally feasible for them to hire another studio patch in all the Pokémon into both SWSH and SV and let them battle each other. They have more than enough dough. It's just simple math.

    Personally, I think this is a case of the “bigger than a molehill, still not a mountain” phenomenon where something that is on some level a valid complaint gets magnified for various reasons. Given that not having all the Pokémon in the game is something that would bother a highly dedicated group like completionists, it’s not surprising it got the online traction it did.

    I'm of the opinion the national dex itself was unweildy from the start, irrespective of how hard it would be on the developer end. It's a novelty at It's core, one you needed to pay for more often than not. Some would say that novelty is what keeps them invested in the franchise, I'd say it's what keeps them addicted, with sword and shield being the withdraw.
    That said, the way gamefreak & co handled "cutting" this feature has eternally poisoned the conversation around it. The issues with the series' development run far too deep to be solved with simply lightening the load, especially when they never fully commited to it in the first place. They didn't cut corners to increase quality, they cut corners to preserve an existing quality

  • @broccoo
    @broccoo 5 месяцев назад +3

    In hindsight, Dexit was always inevitable. They’d always reach a point where there were just too many Pokémon to program into a game - especially at a console changeover. Sword and Shield should NOT have been the games where this was implemented. As much as they try to claim they didn’t have time to craft models for all the Pokémon - most were ported from the 3DS. They’d need cleaning up and textures reworking but they already had a big chunk of the work done. If Nintendo and Game Freak hadn’t rushed the games out, it wouldn’t have been an issue. And for these two being the flagship Pokémon games of the Switch… they doomed them before they even launched. Galar is a beautiful region with great architecture and design, it has a great roster of new Pokémon, but they set it up to fail by making fans bitter about Dexit. And with every subsequent Pokémon Switch game, they’re just making it harder for themselves by refusing to stick to a consistent art style. If they’d take an art style for their games and run with it, they wouldn’t have to worry about making 1000 new models for each game. It really just seems like poor management and rushing things out too quickly.

    like others have said, i don't get why they can't just add the pokemon back through updates, or even just take a little longer to make the games to add all the pokemon into them BEFORE release. all of my pokemon are so special to me, especially some of my pokemon from ultra sun. like my nihilego, who i lovingly and very creatively named jellyfish. i really don't want to touch sword/shield again (i might restart my shield savefile though lol) so she's basically just stuck in home for who knows how long. and i...honestly kind of regret trading her to home because of that. if i had kept her within ultra sun, i would've been able to still battle with her. but now she's stuck. because she can't go to scarlet and violet. because the devs are lazy.
    sure, i'll admit it, i think the new games are good. good from a gameplay perspective. not from what pokemon are in it. there are so many pokemon that i love that just...aren't in the game. mantine, octillery, grapploct, and of course nihilego (i just realized like all 3 of the pokemon i listed are sea creature based pokemon. i should probably stop playing so much splatoon) are pokemon i'll never be able to transfer.
    i'm in a playthrough of pokemon y right now. i love playing older games because i can form memories with these pokemon in one game, and have the joy of seeing them in the newest games once i'm done. but there's some team members that will never make it to scarlet and violet.
    kage, my beloved crobat from sun, is stuck. mizuei, my beloved mantine from y who i literally only just caught, is stuck. sure, both of those pokemon are pokemon that are in legends arceus! but is that really the same? i can't battle my friends with those pokemon if they're in legends arceus. i can't have picnics with them if they're in legends arceus.
    they're stuck. because they can't go to scarlet and violet. because the devs are lazy.
    maybe i'm going insane from writing too many youtube comments and whatever i just wrote makes 0 sense. but basically, to summarize:
    i like nihilego, please add it to scarlet and violet

In Arceus you actually get a cool little side mission showing off their intrigue.

It's certainly going to be annoying when Pokemon Home shuts down in the near future and there'll just be a handful of mons that are just completely unobtainable in a mainline game until Legends ZA comes out. They already solved this problem without making pokemon inaccessible. It's called ban lists. Legendaries and Mythicals are in the games and banned depending on the format. They've also added "Origin Marks" since gen 6 that designate where a pokemon originates and determines what battle formats their eligible for. Completely removing pokemon was the worst way they could restrict pokemon for the competitive scene.

    Dexit was such a disaster. I agree that it was inevitable. It would make people unhappy no matter when it released. But doing it at the start of the first mainline hd Pokemon game on the most successful console in years was a terrible choice. I've never been able to reassemble my old team from soon and Moon.
    Dexit was the straw that broke the camel's back and really forced people to judge Pokemon games more critically. Pokemon used to be my 2nd favorite series ever, and ever since dexit it's dropped to not even top 10.

    Playing Devil's Advocate; if there is one type of game that could contain EVERY single Pokémon now and in the future....
    ...it would be a live service game. Think about it; they would work on one sole engine, and it would be a single game that they have to maintain. A single competitive format that they could update yearly to match the pace of new releases (though I highly dislike the yearly game cycle); and a single hub to add all the Pokémon regions in.
    It's a massive undertaking and there is a clear setback to live service games due to their infamy but genuinely that's what I believe would work.

    Honestly... What are people expecting? There's a LOT of freaking Pokemon now, there's currently over a thousand of them. They can't keep doing this... _Every single game_ having every single Pokemon is kind of a huge ask for such a relatively small development team with a rushed release time. Its not a sustainable option, especially if they want to make _new_ Pokemon as well. It would have only gotten harder and harder with each new release.
    But on the other hand, they do reuse the same models from the 3DS games... So what do I know? :/

      Soo... No one is keeping Game Freak, Creatures Inc. & friends from recruiting more programmers, managing at least in a decent way their own projects and resources, taking more time to develop main series titles. Well, no one besides themselves, and consequentially TPC. It's the root of all the issues the games have since the jump to 3D, Pokédex cut included. They could "keep doing this", but they don't care a single bit. If their management isn't sustainable it's their fault, not a destiny carved in stone.

    haven't finished a main series game since gen 7, primarily for this reason. i'm a shiny hunter, and i miss getting to actually have my shinies in game without subscriptions. i also miss the old pixel sprites as well, the 3D models still aren't that impressive and the animations don't appeal to me. that being said, the furthest i got was with legends: arceus, a game that's probably the most limited a title has been in terms of pokemon for years. i was fine with it though, because it made sense for the game. if they want to limit the pokemon for story purposes, that's fine. but leaving some behind (so far) permanently feels bad. there is still a chance, however small, that a few pokemon just won't be popular enough to move forward. not being able to guarantee that, and charging money for a subscription service to hold these mons, sucks.
    watched a bit further, coincidentally im a newer final fantasy fan. this vid makes a lot of good points overall :)
