A Spongebob Squarecab GP40-3 with a caboose. That's a lot of cool in such a short local! Back when we had horses we ended up with one inside of our pasture one day. Must have jumped in. The owners only lived about 1/4 mile away so was easy enough for them to just bring their saddle and tack and just ride her back home.

Seeing those horses reminds me of stories my mom told me about growing up on a farm in Texas back in the 1920s and 30s. My grandad had a horse, a mule (which my mom occasionally road into town when she was a little girl), along with some pigs and chickens. To her, those were the good old days. She's gone now, but I still remember her childhood stories.
Very nice catch on the Caboose! Last time I saw a caboose was an Arkansas Midland caboose in the middle of a Union Pacific consist which I have pictures of from 2015. Haven't seen one ride the rails since. - Jason
Those sensors you're referring to look like ones I once saw on the West Virginia Secondary in Brice, Ohio, and I was told by the maintainer that they were over-height detectors.
Our horses escaped three days ago, and ran two miles until they were stopped by a fence. Had to walk them all the way back. Saw a caboose about a month ago as well! First one since the early 80's I believe.
A great catch of a caboose! Very cool. Backing in was cool. I saw the spotter on the caboose and the engineer in the cab - avoids any issues that way I bet :) Cool horse in the yard - all we ever get is cows when they break out of the pasture down the road.
Haven't seen a caboose since I was a kid. A lot of them can be used for b&b, camping or just a place to stay for vacation or whatever. The possibilities are endless! You horse was so sad to see his friend go. He needs a companion. Another great Jaw Tooth video. Have a nice day 😊🌈
JT true to form you advertise live action and this is no exception. Nice coverage of the Caboose which is incredibly clean and graffiti free so it must spend the night in the yard close to the office. The only caboose to pass through Milwaukee is on the CP on ballast trains. Real horsepower so there's your NS thoroughbred
GP40-3 and GP39-2, with caboose! I remember when these GP39-2s were assigned to South Florida and I saw just about every member of this group as well as the Small fleet of ex lease fleet SD70Ms also assigned to Florida during the 1990s. Those were the days! This was also when the FEC had nothing but EMDs.
Speaking of no train horn zones, I was getting videos of the trains and this NS SD-40-2 blows this massively loud RS5T and I’m just hearing that thing echo thru the city 😂
I lived and grew up in Latonia. After going thru the wye, across from the model train store, there was water tower for the steamers. Further out the line was the Latonia Yards. Back in the late 50's, early 60's there were sidings with dozens of steam locos waiting to be scrapped.
Last time I saw a caboose was in 2012, when they sent a train down a [now abandoned] spur to pick up the remaining freight cars from some warehouses to clear the track, since they were removing the connector track due to none of the businesses relying on train usage anymore, but rather local trucking. I remember it greatly, they used a [i believe what its called] a SD70 as well with a SD40-2.
"Found beautiful horse in my front yard." My first thought was you had gotten adopted like Norfie did (yeah, silly thought.) Beautiful mare and well taken care of. Lucky she found you instead of getting tagged by a car or truck.
Hello from Germany. Through the videos I have become a fan of the American trains. It clearly shows the differences between the US and Germany when it comes to rail transport. Thanks for this. I am looking forward to more videos.
What another great location; those homes along the rail line are beautiful in Covington Kentucky; the last time I saw a caboose was in one of your videos. You’re right that is a “good looking horse”; but I must say Jessie is a “good looking dog”. Thanks JT fun video!
I haven't seen a caboose since the 1970s. Growing up in post-war USA, I'd see them all the time, and we'd always wave to the man in the caboose. The attendant used to wave to little children and, if you were fortunate enough to be the first car in line, you just knew that he had waited just to wave to you. 1. Who was that person, his title and his job? 2. Why were they phased out? 3. Why are caboose coming back? 4. Will there be caboose men this time around?
I think the person in the caboose was the conductor at the time. He would also look at the train and try to see any hot boxes (over heating bearings). The cabooses were phased out due to technology. The flashing end of train device and hot box detectors along the tracks to check for those. Also the position of brakeman and fireman were more or less eliminated so the conductor moved to the locomotive. Cabooses are still used when trains perform operations where they're backing up.
Cabooses aren't coming back. They're only used in very specific circumstances: either as crew cars for unusually large loads or, more commonly, where the train has to make a long reversing move. There always has to be a crew member at the forward end of the train. For short moves, they just hang off a ladder but, for longer moves, it's safer to have them stand on a caboose. As clineshaunt explained, the things they were used for (keeping an eye on brake pressure and making sure the train's OK) are now performed by the End Of Train device and trackside defect detectors. Also, hot axle boxes are now _much_ rarer, thanks to roller bearings.
