    My pocket hole hack is I bought an extended star tip drill driver and use regular screws out of the box instead of the pricey kreg screws. I know Ana can't say that if she ever wants a kreg sponsorship but it works for me super well

      Agree. 100%. For over 10 yrs I have largely used much cheaper normal self-tapping screws + 9mm washer to create 'pull' in the final turns of the screw. Saved $$$$$$

      The only issue is that those Kreg screws stop when they're supposed to. But that said, I have used construction screws as well 😂

      you just need pan head, or washer head screws. Kreg typically is self treading.
      Anyway, I hate pocket screws and use dowels, dominos or dado

    I really like the older JIG you showed because it has the vacuum hose attachment point. I learned the hard way that you have to "back-off" the bit depth about 1/8th inch in order NOT to overdrive the screws. A great way to attach without biscuits.

    Hi Ana, I have a couple of solutions for when the screws blow out the other side on a project that you though it was set up perfectly. I found that the collar stop on the drill can wander off its setting, so I fixed it for future holes. But here us a solution to fix the existing ones: If just the end of the screw is showing a little bit, you can put a stack of washers behind the washer head. You can plug the hole with a skewer and glue, then drive the screw back in. Also you could try and grind the end of the screw off, but I don't like that solution because if I get the screws mixed up later on, I could end up blowing through the repair... It's no fun when that happens. I've had a lot of that happen on a recent project that drove me bonkers. I have the older Craig K5, and the other one in the kit, I like the new one and the collars are so much better than the way you used to do it.

    • @jodilea144
      @jodilea144 Месяц назад

      I had that issue with an older Kreg set, but I use Massca these days and find that the drill stop stays in place really well - but time will tell if it continues to. I tend to adjust a couple of millimeters shy of the recommended depth to avoid issues, but I used the washer solution for a small shelving unit awhile back, then just filled the hole where the screw blew through. 🙂

    These were excellent tips - from you, as well as your facebook community. I love using pocket hole joinery, but it does require a bit of patience and practice when one is starting out. The tip to use offcuts from your project pieces for practice is an important one, as different wood species and plywood types compress differently as they are screwed into - therefore, what worked for one type/thickness may not work for another that is supposed to be the same thickness. Hopefully that made sense!

    Thank you for your great channel, Anna. I have learned and used so many of your videos as I built my furniture and cabinets.
    A trick I learned from one of the woodworkers I worked with at Home Depot was that to avoid overdriving screws, he used a penny under the tip of the drill when setting the collar. Now that is part of my Kreg kit and I have never had to worry about screw blowout.

    I can NOT seem to get over my prejudice against pocket holes. It drives me nuts. But when I see them I flinch. I've got to get on board (badum-tss.) They're SO effective and useful.

    Pocket holes used often here. My advice is to get 90 degree clamps for assemblies and have 2 drivers ready, one with the drill and the other with the drive bit. Once you get into the build rhythm it can go very quick.

    One thing I heard about keeping the board from moving while screwing is to use wood glue and then sprinkle some salt on the glue before screwing it in. The salt will act to keep "traction" and keep it from slipping. I haven't confirmed this method but it came from two reliable wood-working sources. Personally, I just clamp a block onto the board and that keeps it physically from moving.

    Ana thanks so much for this video. Ive literally just started my pocket hole adventure with a Trend mini pocket hole jig. Im building the bench press I found on Jaime Costiglio's page. ...full of pocket holes 😂 Was thrown a bit as it didnt have a measuring depth gauge..but I just spent a bit of time experimenting with drill depth and screw size..and also wood depth. That 720 look so much easier though 😍

    It's much more expensive, but if doing a lot of pocket holes one might consider the Castle 110 pocket hole cutter. The angle at which the screws go in is only 3 degrees so the boards don't tend to shift/creep and your joints are stronger. It doesn't handle any material more than 1" thick so if you are going to work with 2x4s you have to also have a conventional pocket hole jig.
