- Mari Boine grew up in a Sámi family in the North of Norway, where she was taught to be ashamed of her heritage and the close relation to nature. Growing up she found the opposite to be true, and turned the realisation into a life long musical career. Mari is a singer, musician and songwriter from Sápmi, Norway. Her music is infused with Sami roots (joik) in combination with jazz, rock and electronic sounds. Mari Boine has been one of the most outspoken and important representatives of the Sámi culture. As an artist and activist, she has worked tirelessly for the recognition and preservation of the indigenous Sámi culture and for the protection of Mother Earth among other causes. my family is german and i had been told that we were swedish but after some more digging we figured out we were sámi which explains why we have a lot more slavic features with button noses or “ski jump” noses and round faces that are much different from the lanky sweds with long faces. i’m glad we now know what we are. it feels nice to know that there’s reasons to why we look the way we do ❤💚💛💙
@freddiekrueger8715 people take their culture and traditions with them when they immigrate to other places, just because my family decided to move doesn't make me any less sami it makes me sami-american which is still sami.
That makes about as much sense as saying you stop being your ethnicity when you learn another language.
I only found out my family descended from the sámi because I was frustrated that I didn't look like any of the other euro-centric people in my life! It's crazy to see how our heritage can really influence how we look and not knowing where we come from can be a source of incredible frustration
Thank you Mari for your strong testimony. I live in Belgium, the European heart (hard?)land. I believe a shift is happening now. More people are tired of our over imposing culture. They reconnect to nature which is nothing more than life itself, maybe they discover something of wildness within and around. From this new roots are growing to our common ancestral heritage which is still here, right under the surface. I believe people like Mari are interconnected, together they are like a protective shield , wathching over this planet...
She's a treasure for the world and the wonderful Culture she upholds.
I was honored to meet Mari very briefly a few years ago. I wish I had known my close biological connection to Saami Loppa peoples then. Such a powerful point of irony, our ancestors lived by the leave no trace and sustainability for our future generations, yet that has made us non-existent in the eyes of Euro-christian and capitalistic greed. I hope to share space with Mari again someday, to learn from her insight and continue to carry the torch forward. I share your wish for equal respect of our scientific and philosophical worlds, particularly for our tree relatives. Ollu Giitu Sámisosa!
living with the land in community with little to no class system has been carried out successfully by so many indigenous communities. thank you for pointing out that European Christianity and capitalism are VERY tied because so many European governments had no problem exploiting indigenous ethnic groups because they were not Christian and therefore subhuman according to colonizers.
Maris music made such a big difference for me. It made me dear to use my voice. And her story is such a profound one for how indigenous peoples knowledge has been treated, and needs to be listened to, for the good of mankind. It can not be lost.

I was born in Western Norway, where my mom was also born, her family having been there for centuries. My father was from Finnmark, from a long line of proud fisherman. We moved to the US when I was young and I've spent the bulk of my life here, but still feeling very much Norwegian. It was a lark to recently do my DNA and to find out I'm part Inuit, Finnish, Swedish, as well as Norwegian . Inuit????? Even the Finnish and Swedish was weird. But then I looked at where in Sweden and Finland my DNA was from, and it was from the very northern parts of both of those countries, bordering Norway. Then I looked at my DNA relatives, and many from those areas were wearing traditional Sami Kofte/ Gakti. I then started my geneology. Most records don't say who is Sami and who isn't, but my great grandfather's did, and there were several others, as well. Near as I can figure out, I'm about 40% Sami. And I had no idea, because it was a shameful thing to admit in my father's family. They assimilated and hit it in order to survive. I'm over 60, and I'm just now finding out a bit of who I am, that I'm part of a rich culture with long roots that I resonate with. If one believes in those kinds of connections, it explains my restlessness, an inability to stay in an area for more than 2 years, my connection to nature and to animals, my joy in music and traditional songs from all over the world. And I'm both sad and angry that I've missed out.

I am 40 and did almost the exact same thing you did, and just like you, found out about the erasure, the scattering, the religious education, and my own grandfather who i never met. Apparently there are too many of us figuring this out later in life because NOBODY in our family would admit to it. I only wish I knew what color gakti they wore.....
You have Finnmark in bouth Sweden and Norway, that the Settelment frome the Svedjefinnar. The burnd Land in the Forest that the was able to have Grains of There Homstead. They usuelly came frome Finnland = Finnmark

Thanks you so much for this truth and your nice energy Mari. And yes, it happened through whole Europe, they destroyed our holy oaks, our cultplaces, built churches on it and they burned our wise women. We all have to find our roots back to heal again and to connect to our real animistic nature.
The sámi religion survived until the 1800s
Her music is excellent. I wish she had more vinyl out. I have so many of her cds.
Found out some time ago that part of my Norwegian Heritage is Samí.
We are here in America too. I feel connected to her songs.

The Pagans(So many of the different forms from the north and all the way down Europe) also had this rythm, in different sounds, love and respect for the world around them. It's so sad that it's been lost and we've completely forgotten who our ancestors actually were.

Nothing is lost! Humanity all over the globe has lived in shamanic societies from our beginning until appr. 2500 years ago. But even only 1000 years ago, shamanism was still the culture in which the majority of all people on Earth lived. The old wisdom, the old knowledge, the love for Mother Earth and her beautiful nature: it is all still in our genes, in our bone marrow, in our eternal spirit and soul. Nothing is lost as long as millions of people get goose bumps all over when they hear Mari Boine sing, when they "recognize" her music in their hearts, even if they don't understand a word with their ears. We only have to re-member to be able to re-connect... And that's what's happening world wide, right now.

My grandfather was a preacher. My grandmother always made me give thanks for nature. Even when I hurt myself she made me go and ask the thing that hurt me take the pain back. Always. I miss her.

BUT in history the culture & offcorse tha language "was in som places succesfully vansihed/destroied".
