That salt rub just washed off a lot of the key ingredient - lemon oil from the skins. Rinsing them off well should do it. Cutting off the peels & letting the oils seep into sugar for 12+ hours helps draw out the flavor (as well as adding some sugar to the juice/pulp).
Love that its natural the blue color and the flowers really make it visually appealing but im sure it taste wonderful as well lemonade is always refreshing this time of year.

No, its don't have flavour just smell like rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa) but the smell does not strong like rosella. So i recommended you make it with lemon or lime water. And it will turn into purple when meet acid.
The flower that gives the blue/violet color is called Butterfly pea. Malaysia has a dish called nasi kerabut, that has been using this flower like ages ago. Its tradition. Drink in moderation. Not enough study, locals call it poisonous if consumed too much and blue color in nature is generally considered rare.

Butterfly pea tea is lovely, but it tastes like hay. Other flavors easily hide the hay flavor though .
I agree! It's not as strong as turmeric but still has that hay-like flavor; I would use it just for the color and mix it with other things for flavor.
