There are no socialist states in Europe. We are all democracies. All European states guarantee paid vacations, paid sick days, paid parental leave and health care for all. Demos stands for people and a democracy should be there and provide for the people in the first place.

This depends on your definition of socialism. Socialism an democracy are absolutely not exclusive. Socialism is a system for spreading wealth and democracy is a system for valuing the importance of single citizens (meaning every citizen has the same value and therefore basically the same rights as any other).

A lot of people get confused, but europe is capitalist. Everybody can start a business, you can ask the price you want for products or services.
Anybody can become succesfull and rich. We have stock markers, competition, democracy, freedom.
The only difference is our governments and businesses have to keep the unions happy, and the unions are not happy if the workers are not happy.
Sadly the unions have disappeared in the USA, leading to the exploitation we see today in the USA.

You do kinda make a lot of excuses for your country...it shouldn't matter what peoples diets are for the life expectancy in certain areas...the fact is something is wrong with your country's systems that make it so those people in Appalachia and West Virginia have low life expectancies...like preventative health, higher wages to buy real food, social welfare help for those who are vulnerable and at risk.
Many countries have areas where the population may be poorer but the government helps to make sure the majority can afford accommodation, food and has access to healthcare. Even with these poor people most other industrialised countries will still have a higher life expectancy than the US.
The US healthcare system may be less effective because the motivation is money. Get in and get out as fast as possible for the next paying customer.

    • @calebamore

@@stevenbalekic5683 Stating facts is not the same as making an excuse. It does matter what people's diets are for life expectancy. It's not always social issues that you mentioned that create low life expectancy. Some people live in hedonism. Some people are dumb. Some people are dumb and hedonistic. They don't care if you offer them preventative health or if they have money for better food.
The US has a. lot fo programs to help with these things, too. A lot of them are just poorly run. We do have medicare, though, which covers a lot of people.
It's ineffective because it's bloated and corrupt. There's a bunch of middlemen and administrators that suck up an obscene amount of money. There's a ton of inefficiency.

It actually does...basically no other industrialised country has such a big disparity between socio-economic groups as the US does where it would be called "third world conditions" of the general population...and the very same mixtures of peoples settled in those places as they did in other multicultural countries like Canada, Australia, the UK. All these places have the same amount (per capita) of social problems from lazy people, mental issues, unhealthy foods etc....the difference is those other countries have high grade healthcare, metal health, social housing, job seeker support, higher wages, at least 25 mandatory holiday days off per year, laws so companies cannot take advantage of employees by setting minimum wage for each job type and setting the full time week to 38 hours and contributions to your retirement payment.
With these things in place it helps people who have no hope and have given up to where they can get a good paying job and don't have to give so much away because there is no health insurance to pay (unless you want a more luxurious experience then you can opt for private insurance)...schools are by law obligated to only serve healthy freshly prepared foods where the kids can grow a habit of trying to eat healthier. I have seen many people from Appalachia, Alabama etc. on youtube where they do what they can to prosper...either by moving away from the depressed area, gaining self employment etc.
But just imagine if everyone had access to all the benefits that the other coutries offer to their citizens.
But there is one thing different. Many of the other countries have a government that is more trustworthy. Their governments tend to be more balanced by having at least a centre right and centre left party system where the US has slid too far over to the right and far right where companies and business are more important to them then the people...with this system it is better to have the current healthcare system where proper preventative care is badly administered...this way profits are better because instead of preventing an illness where the drug companies and hospitals can't charge you to make money, people just get sick so they can charge you.

Japan has in fact lower (average) Working hours than the US

    • @calebamore
      @calebamore  2 года назад

Thanks I've heard conflicting information. It may be that the mean is higher and the median is lower or vice versa. Allegedly the employees that work overtime tend to work much more overtime than US employees. Both countries seem to have bad work practices in some areas.

  • @calebamore
    @calebamore  2 года назад +5

*Correction:*Japan used to be known as having the longest average working hours and was infamous for suicides from overwork. They even have a word for death from overwork - Karoshi (過労死, Karōshi).
Current data appears to show that this has changed and the US has now overtaken Japan in total hours worked annually per person.
I have found some conflicting data, though, in that employees in Japan who do work overtime on average have more overtime hours annually. In addition, it was found that 37% of companies are exceeding the legally allowed federal overtime rules, which may cause inaccuracies with reported data.
    *More corrections! (embarrassing)*
Starting at 8:06 I kept saying "premium" instead of "COPAY."
    My apologies.
I think it actually shows another small reason why the US healthcare system is horrible. There's a bunch of terms you need to use that you shouldn't even have to think about if you need medical assistance. On top of that, if you get these terms confused (like I did) it could end up costing you a lot of money.
I also said 25 thousand a few times when I meant 25 HUNDRED.

  • @stephanweinberger
    @stephanweinberger 2 года назад +4

@8:12 - well, that's exactly the point. Many people in the US are under- or uninsured, because they just cannot afford it. Also: without insurance you have to pay much more out of pocket when you need healthcare (and weirdly you even have to pay out of pocket if you _have_ insurance).
So in total, on _average_ the US spend about double the amount on healthcare than any other industrialized nation, while at the same time producing worse outcomes (shorter life expectancy, higher infant/maternal mortality, more chronic illnesses, ...).
@12:27 - of course he's picking extremes, but the question is: should there be any place in the _richest_ country in the history of the world, that has a lower life expectancy than a developing country?
@22:45 - nope. Average working hours per year in Japan: 1,644, US: 1,779 (both 2019 figures).
@23:45 - that wasn't the industry, it was unions. Basically in Europe no worker will accept a lower wage, because they have a strong representation.
Also: what good is a minimum wage, when there are official ways to circumvent it (like e.g. in food services, where waiters can be payed as little as $2,15 per hour because employers are allowed to factor tips - despite their random nature - into the base wage).

Maybe because they have been fortunate enough to have been born in a country that cares about their people where parents get time to spend with their kids and raise them with good morals and principles the way all parents would want to have the luxury of doing.. But the way you're government works does not often allow this especially for poorer families.. Personally I would not care to live in such a country.. I think that you (and some other people, who made critical reaction videos) missunderstood the actual point in this video. Although David Cross makes quite a lot comparisons between the USA and other countries throughout his video, these comparisons are not supposed to show that other countries are better than the US. These comparisons, as far as I understand, are meant to show a kind of proof of concept: There are multiple countries that demonstrated for many decades a working health care system for all of their citizens that they can handle with even much less money. And the USA can do it too if they manage to handle things a little bit differently. It's also not a good reason to use the fact that, for example, the USA is just slightly worse in particular things, like life expectancy, than other worst developed countries (at least in terms of whatever point has been pointed out) as an argument to say that it doesn't count or makes things not as bad as portrayed. Many Americans can't afford health care, that's a fact. Does it really matter that the USA is just less 1% worse than e. g. Thailand in terms of life expectancy? It's still a comparison with developed countries which are bad at health care and rank the USA currently at place 54. At least one thing is for sure: David used purposedly a title like this to upset people, which I find kind of funny, because it makes quite a lot people change their reaction more dramatically, than it would otherwise do. And I think that every intelligent human understands, that the video title is not meant to be taken literally. ;-)

    • @calebamore
      @calebamore  2 года назад +1

Thanks. I'm a little surprised to hear that, but some other people have been upset that I say anything critical. I'm just trying to give my real reaction and opinions.
I like David Cross and I know it's supposed to be somewhat comical. I think people are used to fake reaction videos where people just accept whatever is said and act super surprised.
I'm not sure where you're from, but I hear from European the point you're saying a lot. Something along the lines of "We did, so you can do it too."
On paper that's true. We could physically do the same the same thing. But implementation of anything that actually helps negate inequality in America is nearly impossible. That's why I said his greatest point was addressing how much waste there is in the US healthcare system. We have to pinpoint where the problem areas are and find legitimate solutions to them, not just say "It worked there, it can also work here."
I think I discussed it in the video, but basically the morality is at a freefall in America and the structural system doesn't help. Bribes are essentially legal in America, so the wealthy have incredible control over the system. They never allow legislation to be approved that really helps the poor. Most programs that are made to help the poor are bad and the vast majority of the money that goes to them gets funneled into bureaucrat, contractor and oligarch pockets. Maybe 10% actually helps poor people.
If they tried made healthcare free or nearly free in America many wealthy organizations and individuals would lobby VERY HARD to not let that happen. Seeing as it hasn't happened after many pushes in America's history, I don't think it will happen. So, you have to get rid of either this lack of morals/empathy or get rid of this incentive system or both.

That is exactly the point of the video Norway don´t have a mental health problem because people get treated and people have good education so no "low IQ" like in the USA. Not the other way around.
Is totally fair to compare they are both wealthy nations.
And again at 25:40 you have unstable people because people don´t get treatment are more overworked, and more strefull then in Denmark. Is nothing to do withe culture most country's in Europe are more culture diversify than the USA. In Europe you can have two neighbor cities (like 5 miles apart) and they will have diferent accents, specific words for some things, they will have different festivals and traditions.
In conclusion is not that you don´t have healthecare and social suport because you have problems. You have problems because you don´t have healthcare and social suport and that is the all point of the video.

Hey thanks for you comment and thank you for putting timestamps on what you refer to. It helps a lot.
Mental health can improve IQ, but it's not a 1:1 correlation.
I think you don't realize the degree of instability. The people I'm referring to don't even have jobs and they often have brain damage.
The US is by far the most diverse country on earth. We're known as a melting pot because we're made of immigrants from nearly every culture and we're constantly getting immigrants from nearly every culture. The differences you're referring to are trivial compared to a those people who immigrate to America like a Somalian and a Korean or an Iraqi and an Argentinian, etc. Some European countries have been opening their borders more, but we're literally made out of immigration of vastly differing countries.
I for sure agree we'd have less problems if he had better healthcare, but it's putting the cart before the horse. If it's clear that America's healthcare system is atrocious (70% say U.S. healthcare has major problems/is in state of crisis), why not fix it? It's because of other problems that we have. There's not even a real effort to make it better. There's a lack of love/morality which causes greed and keeps the people who are benefitting from the broken system fighting hard for it or at least not trying to change it.

In my prespective where is the problem in the USA you need a job to get insurance therefore treatment, but you can only get a job if you are at your best. That means that the uphill journey is slow but downhill is fast as hell. Two senarios are possible.
If what ever reason you are down, you will not get a job if you don´t get a job the pressure and anxiety will increase and deeper you go. And because you can aford treatment down sperial is formed
The second senario you are stable so you get a job you making money every thing is fine. But overwork start to have efect on you, your productivity lowers so the company pressure you anxiety rise, and because you can´t stop working you don´t have any (or very low) chance to recover so you end up losing your job.
The same senario in Europe case 1 you are in "bad shape" you go to a doctor get help and enter a social program that help you get back on your fit. Sure half of the cases will became social parasites that leave from the help of the state but other half will actualy get on there fit and contribute to society.
Case 2 even simply you are overworked you go to vacations batery recharged you came back to work fresh as cucumber. Or if the tall is to great you stop get treated the state helps you and after a year or so you can be reintegraed.

I am not talking only about a healthsystem i am talking about a more social state in general. The healthsystems is just the easy one actualy. But again the problems that USA have came from the lack of social state and you think that you can solve those problems without addressing the root of them. From where do you think that the lack of "love/Morality" and greed came from. Is the lack of suport people have. People are traped they have to work like slaves to keep a float. Because every thing is suported on the job so they can´t aford to loose it. So they killthemselfs to secure the job.
When you are trape your priority is o get some space to breath then you can asset and work on the other problems.

So in Sweden for healthcare there are no insurance to pay, It is funded through taxes and health care is one part of it. So what i pay the most is 120 dollar a year for doktorsappointments and everything inside of that like operation and other treatments. When i reached the sum of 120 dollars my healthcare, any healthcare is free for the rest of the year. And there is noone telling me i can not get a operation that i need, if i need it i get it.
If i don't visit the doctor or any other healthcare instance during that year i don't pay anything at all or i pay until i reach 120 dollar.
Medicine same thing. I pay up to 240 dollars a year for medicine. When i reached 240 dollars it is free for the rest of the year.
For children up to 20 years everything is free. You pay nothing at all it is all taxfunded..
There is also no difference between rich or poor, this is the same cost for all.
Everything else is funded with taxes. So then you gonna go yeah but your taxes are so high, sure they are, but are they really? Because i did not pay anything for my childresn education, NOTHING and you also get free food, real food in school. I have heavy subsidized childcare, i have childbenefits which is 125 dollar per child up to 20 years old. All people in Sweden get that, rich or poor have no matter it is tax benefits.
Then there is roads, busses, trains, library, sport, art, companies, appartments, social securitey, parental leave, vacation, pensions, sickleave (we dont have set days if you are sick you are sick and stay home and get payed) unions and so much more that is involved in the tax system with benefits.
So yes we have a high tax system but we also get benefits from it which in the end make sure we all have a good standard and for those that are really really poor and can't afford to support them self and/or their family because they may have lost their job, got cancer, someone died well anything really are also supported and get money for rent, food, some other costs that is needed to survive. In the end noone will go broke over them being ill short or long term and noone use go fund be because they need a operation, we know if shit hits the fan, we will be ok. We might not live the rich life if that happens but we wont live on the street having nothing to eat and can't care for the children anymore.
Also there is people i Denmark and Sweden who have people trying to live off the society but that does not mean that you can not make it work for the rest of America and instead trying to find those that do. In the end there will always be parasites but over all most people provide to the society in one way or the other and that is what should be important and what should be built up on, not the few who is taking advantage.

That is, by law, companies in the US are not required to give paid vacations to their employees. By law, companies in the US are not required to provide paid maternity leave. Without these legal obligations, companies in the US end up giving what you call benefits and which in most countries are called rights.

@@calebamore You are right. but the only ones who can make the laws change in favor of citizenship instead of companies are the citizens themselves through voting or through removing support for a two-party system that has only achieved is to degrade its voters to the category of almost slaves. The responsibility lies with you citizens, not with the politicians.

    • @calebamore
      @calebamore  2 года назад

@@alejandrorios2340 Yeah, but it's nearly impossible. Most people don't have a high enough iq to really decide who the best candidate is. They're influenced more strongly by other factors. It's mostly a matter of publicity. You usually have to pay for that by owning a media company, having supporters at a media company or buying ads. That's why Trump was such a disruptive candidate. He's rich, but he didn't have enough money to buy a ridiculous amount of ads or a major media company and the only one the supported him was FOX. On top of that the guy who was supposed to be Democrat candidate (Bernie Sanders) was cheated out of his spot. Again, through corruption.
The nominee process is inherently corrupt in that some politicians (superdelegates, unbound delegates) can have an equal vote to tens of thousands of citizens. This makes up about 15% of the total votes of the Democrat nominee process. For Republicans it's less than 5%, which ironically makes the Democrat party less Democratic. Both are bad, though.
Many people, especially dumb people, tend to vote for whoever seems like they're going to win. That's why the Bolsheviks chose their name. It means "majority," but they were actually the minority party for their early history. Lenin knew that people would side with him by default if they though he was the biggest. It's herd mentality.

As an european I like to ask a question. What do the following words have in common?
Individualism, socialism, capitalism , comunism. Right answer: They end on ism. So is there a meaning to ism?
Yes! The ending implies that we are dealing with a theory. Why? Because ism is the old greek word for theory.
So what theories do we talk about:
Individualism is the theory of a state where the needs of indivials are the base for legislation,, administration and judgement (e.g. City state of Athens), Socialism is the theory that the needs of a society, should be the base for legislation, etc. (e.g. the City state of Sparta). Both words were first used by the greek philosopher Plato in his book politiko approximately 400 b.c. The book concludes that both theories are equally good to buuld a state upon if the leadership is competent.
So what should US citizens take away from this? Always vote for the competent candidate. According to the book a competent leadership has been educated and proven himself in the art of thinking (Philosophie).
So please on November 8th, choose candidates for puplic offices, who are able to express their reasoning and feeling by showing competence in the english language (no mirandering sprechen, no contradictions)

So, even though on paper they have about 30% as many beds as the US I suspect in actuality it's more like almost no beds have an adequate amount of anything. It just seems like not a good measurement of the quality of a country's healthcare.

Hard to confirm, but there are 2 factors. First, Americans with their nation wide ability for voice projection, acclaim to be the bestest. This is just my observation as EU citizen with some relatives and friends in the US and A, and one thing they for sure are the best, is bragging about how much $ they earn AND spend on things like apartments in NY. Or how much more skyscrapers they have and this 1-2k year old city should already have some.
And this bring us to second reason. It's easy. Aside from nominal wealth and military spending, there's not really much going for them.

The interesting yet tiering fact when I watch this video reacted to by americans. Is that the most of them yet try to defend or question the obvious problems that they have.
Are Americans so brainewashed so they feel an obligation to defend their country even how well the fact are laid in front of them ?
Cause not can any other country be better... Or can it ?
And if they once agree that another country's way of things works better. They don't want to have the necessary change in form of for an example higher tax. So everyone can benefit to have better health care. Or a safety net for the weakest most vulnerable in society. I am proud to live in a country and pay enough tax so everyone can be helped. No matter how rich or poor they are.. So I often hear American reactors say European country's are better in many ways for the people. But yet they don't want to have that change in US cause they want to change. For me that's egoism..And I also follow some Americans who has moved for an instance to Sweden and once they live here fully understand how bad US are. At the opposite many Swedes don't really understand how good we have it here until they move to US.
The most strange thing for me is that how bad it even gets in US with all this questions and others like abortion laws, Gun laws crime and all other things. Still many Americans says oh its the greatest country in the world.... And what even comes up they will defend America and how America Does things whatever...
As an European its just so strange among many other things about the US like in school swear Aligance to the flag everyday and stuff.
Well I'm rambling but it is many things that's really hard to understand and mostly I feel sorry for the American people in the end.
I would never in my life want to live there when I compare so many things about living in Northern Europe.
    Interesting nevertheless.

-universal healthcare (once again, not the best between european countries, but no comparison possible with the US, we don't have to go bankrupt or open a gofundme to pay the bill...)
      - unemployed benefits
      - paid vacations days
      - paid parental leave
      - i can be sick 3months fully paid before being paid half (insurance cover the loss) and after 1 year, i can be sick again fully paid for 3 months
      - we are paid less because we work less too : a full time job is 35h weekly - actually we usually work more than that but we get more paid vacation days in exchange, in my case for a 37h30 per week, i have 56 paid days vacations in a year (25 regular vacation days, 15 days because i work 37h30 a week instead of 35h a week, 2 bonus days if i take enough vacation days early or late in the calendar (it's like if i take 8 days off season i have 2 bonus days, just to avoid everybody taking too much vacation during summer), and holydays (12 more off days this year in France, 14 for me because i leave in an area which was german between WW1 and WW2 and we kept some advantages from that period))

David cross Cherry picks all over the place, most of these country's have smaller military because America provides protection for most of the world, I wonder what kind of health care we could provide if we stopped giving other countries our money? Also Americans pay 37% in taxes( way to much) but a lot of these other industrial countries pay over 50 % in taxes, on top of that , often they pay 50% in sales taxes, often making almost it impossible to buy a house or even a car, and one has to ask , if America is so bad, why does David live here? America is still a free country, he can leave any time he wants,

Hey Marvin thanks for your comment! Great points. I also always think when I hear people complain about the US military - would you rather have a country like China running the world? Lol. 90% of the world population would prefer the US if they really experienced China dominating them.

Funny...last time I checked the only time a country was protected by others it was the US that got helped out by its allies.
Every time I hear that myth about the US protecting anybody I have to laugh. The US can't even protect its own citizens...and that with the most funded military and the most armed police force on earth.
If the US was to half its military spending it would still outspend its two largest adversaries.

17:18 The reason for this is simple, you cannot just make a medication and sell it. You have to have it approved first, many are patented so you cannot straight up copy them either. Because of how medications work, if you add things you can ruin it's effects. The amount of effort you would have to go through just to try and undercut someone is absurd and pointless when you know they can make it for 1/100th of the selling price. They could undercut you faster and more efficiently, forcing you out of the market before you even managed to make back the money you spent getting your drug approved. That is assuming that the other companies don't just block your approval with bribes in the first place.
