Because you use different axis for different tricks... i.e. when throwing a shuriken or swipe into a cork you want to be off-axis not vertical, where as if you want to swing it through, you want to be more vertical - The momentum you use is different in each axis.

Yeah? overall its 90 tho... the "off-axis" for twist tricks is just the midway point between vertical and horizontal (Also goes for 135 degrees too)
