  • Went to the hair salon for the first time in a long time. Salon is located at 5456 N 5th St
    Philadelphia, PA 19120
$50 for a wash, deep condition, trim and straighten
Be sure to bring your own heat protectant because they do not use it and they use a lot of heat.

As a Dominican I understand that sometimes we use too much heat, but that's not true for all of us. You just gotta find the right Dominicans that support natural hair.

People love talking about how much heat is used in Dominican salons but every video I've seen on African American salons is the same. In fact sometimes they use more heat because round brushes aren't utilized. Instead paddle brushes or blowdryers with a comb attached are, which results in more porous hair. In turn hot combs, hair straighteners, and curling irons are used to achieve 1 style. Regardless of where you go though heat=damage.

The same technique is used here soo??? The were referring to the flat iron, 2 passes on high heat is best, more than and you can potentially get heat damaged.

    • @sib9769

Most natural salons are going to use the tension method instead of the round brush and focus more on heat products.

The reason yall go to the Dominicans is to get silky straighten hair. And the only way to do that is to get a chemical or use heat. So I don't understand why yall always complain about the heat like you don't know how blacks girls have to straighten their hair.

  • @sashaeucebio5356
    @sashaeucebio5356 7 лет назад +45

As a Dominican with 3c hair I feel like regardless of where you go, if you wanna get your hair straightened with heat then be prepared for the consequences🤷🏾‍♀️ has nothing to do with race or technique. Whenever you make your hair do something it doesn’t naturally do there could be consequences. Don’t want heat or “too much heat” then do your hair your damn self, you know your hair and what you want better than anyone and what it can handle 😂

I’ve learned from my local Dominican salon that their hair is just as thick as our hair and a lot of times they get relaxers. She told me that her hair is thicker than mine. Also from going to school for cosmetology I’ve learned it’s not a lot of heat at all it’s really steam which is sometimes good for your scalp

I had two Dominican stylist when I lived in Florida. They were very good. I didn't have your experience about too much heat, my hair is a 3c texture. They actually like to use the roller set, but if you want a faster method, then they use the silk and press. I would never say all the stylist are the same, because they are not. For example one of the Dominican that I used to go when I lived in Florida was very informative and helpful giving me advice to how I should take care of my hair at home. I once went to an American stylist and she burned my hair. I won't go to that stylist anymore but I wouldn't condemned all the American stylist as the same as that one.
I live in Europe now, in Uk. And is hard to find a good stylist who understands natural hair. If you live in London you probably find some, but if you live in a town or not big city you probably won't find stylist who really understand your hair. I take care of my hair. Thanks for the advice of my Dominican stylist in Florida, I can handle my hair.

Went for the first time when i went natural and when it came to wash my hair, it didnt revert back abd my 3c/4a curls were lifeless and limpy😭 and my hair smelled like strong chemicals mix with heat😷 i cried and cried but had to just transition and big chop again. Now my hair is arm pit length and still healthy. I go to this natural hairstylest and she does a good job on my hair, Silky and flowey and looks like domincan work but without the damage👌🏽🙌🏽😍

..not all the time Dominicans will damage your hair. she should have got rollers she has thick hair. Then just got it blown out and if you wrapped it put on a scarf it would looked like you straightened it. lol I go to the Dominicans in the hood. They will damage ya hair if you go too often. That is a lot of heat I used to go like every 2 weeks my hair did grow but I saw it was thinning so I stopped going lol now I'm natural team no heat. Your hair is really bomb girl but don't go to them too often. Especially if your natural with no perm.

Um just because she used a lot of heat doesn't mean all Dominican hair dressers. Be very aware that a real good Dominican dresser will never need to use the flat iron, if they give it a good blow dry. A good Dominican blowout will never need a flatiron, remember that.

As a dominican who lives in Dominican Republic. Hair stylists are Really Good at making curly hair straight but they do use a lot of heat. Also, we don't typically flat iron, we just blow dry.

“Dominicans put a lot of heat on the hair “ ik we do cause we dont want your hair to get frizzy and doesnt last and ya can’t say it doesnt look sleek.. regardless they put heat protectant.. if ya don’t want ya hair straight af then straighten your own hair

I remember I went to the Dominicans , my hair smelled fried for a week. Shampooed and it still smelt burnt . Bc after that. I’ll never go back. But a lot of people’s hair can take it. I’m just not one of them. Your hair came out pretty tho.

Why is everyone coming for Dominicans?????? There’s nothing wrong with going to their salons black people really need to stop acting like we the only ones who can do hair. Her hair looked cute the only thing about Dominicans is that they use a lot of heat.

Beautiful hair! They need to use better shampoo n conditioner. Massage your edges with oils every night and stay away from ponytails. It will grow back.

Her parts were too big, her hair is thick, so the thicker the hair the thinner the sections, as a licensed cosmetologist in California I would have too a more different approach to her thick hair. Looks like it was just blow dried tbh.

Dominican salons are notorious for too much heat. Be careful. They also generally don't take a conservative, long term approach to hair. You can see that by the way she is putting that hair dryer right on your bar and the brush. They really should not ever touch. And she did 3-4 passes. That's also a big no no.

I'm from Philly too, gang gang 🤘🏾💯 lol
But I stopped going to the Dominicans because I felt like they were going to give me heat damage and I have natural hair so I didn't wanna go through that. They know how to straighten and curl some damn hair though. I also stopped going to African braiding shops because of one bad experience, they also just braid really tight imo, and they be gripping up my edges and I don't need no damn bald spots, bad enough my hair is already short (it goes a little bit past my shoulder when straightened). Your hair came out really cute though.

I got a Dominican blowout once about 18 yrs ago . Damn near fried my scalp! The smoke coming off my hair was ridiculous and when it was done it was so silky and fine... It felt TOO light. I felt like I had no hair on my head!Never again i said. I like straight hair sometimes but I like volume too.
I think they used to much heat on her hair. But I also know everyone's hair is different & cam endure the heat without long term damage. Between the blow dryer and then the flat iron? I Hope it fully snaps back.
I've learned that it's better for your hair to roller set it, Dry it then pass a flat iron thru it or a blow dryer with tension . Fir me the goal is to minimize the direct heat! I've read blow drying actually boils the water molecules in your strands as they evaporate. It's a stressor on your strands . Some ppls hair can't take it. I know my curls didn't all snap back from too much flat ironing . I had to trim the straight pieces that refused to coil, they only "waved up" after many months so I knew they were ruined.

smart young lady bringing her own heat protectant but stylist didn't appear to use much. Plus as much heat as it was it probably didn't make much difference. Looked like young lady had healthy hair overall to withstand the heat. Trim seemed appropriate, not excessive. Nice results!
