I’m from The Bronx, I lived on Kingsbridge,Fordham and Northeast Bronx on GunHill. People really don’t know the history,it was owned by a Dutch man named Jonas Brunc/Bronc and used to be part of Westchester.
All farmland originally. Wealthy people from Manhattan, who were friends of the Bronc family, used to say "We're going to the Bronc's" whenever they were visiting. Apparently that stuck, and eventually became _The Bronx._ At least that's how it was taught to us in school in the late 90s. Always loved that story though.
I lived in Kingsbridge, went to Kennedy High School and worked in Riverdale. The whole area has changed completely but Riverdale was always private because they paid higher taxes so they demanded more. Never stopped anybody from the projects or Broadway from going in the area during the day. There is no reason for anybody to walk around that area after 10, with shops closed. So privacy is very much understand.
They deserve to be taxed more single family zoning steals from the community and they pay less in taxes then it cost to service them stealing from the entire New York State
"Closed mindedness?" Riverdale is 20 minutes from midtown. The neighborhood is wealthy therefore they have private security. A lady mentioned car theft. Imagine the attempted housebreaking? Those residents are well aware of the economic situation beyond their neighborhood.
I work in fieldston and it didn't even register to me that the hill acts as a sort of physical "mote" to keep its separate from the rest of the bronx. I take my commute with the regular people on the subway from 1 train and it really is a schocking change once you get up that hill. School is mixed white/black/hispanic and kids are mostly great. Parents are a mix- half are cool, and the other half has an upper east side snooty air about them, but what do you expect when the tuition costs more than harvard...
The hill (it is really a ridge) acts as a barrier in that over the two miles of Broadway there are only a handful of roads up and all take a long way up the ridge: Johnson/Kappock, Riverdale Ave, 238, 246, and Mosholu

@ one does not simply equal another. They have many variables that go with those two….ideas. It is the other variables like education funding being lower in those areas and higher funding for others. Food deserts also attribute. I don’t just like the fact that the idea is if you are poor you will commit a crime. Especially when we have billionaires convicted of felonies.
It’s basically a smaller extension of the Westchester, south East CT culture. Large homes and no dumb shit going off. Pricing reflects that. The fact people (or you) might think this is wrong reflects the stupid sentiment of recent times(close mindedness, isolation). It’s called people wanting to be left alone from crime and other antics you could imagine. Grew up not far away and completely understand the segregation
As long as people can afford and want to separate themselves from things they don't care to be associated with, it becomes a problem or racist towards others somehow. Imagine, the one guy said it's racist because they don't want others in their private neighborhoods. It's insane. Isn't this what the constitution guarantees? Freedom of association etc? No, it's the envy of the rich and lack of ability to think critically. This is a losers perspective, this whole video sucks.
Yeah I was like that’s not racism, that’s just wanting to make sure outsiders don’t come and crash your place, bunch of multimillionaire homes in rows - with some of them probably empty during certain times - yeah a target a specific subset of society would like to pay a visit. These neighborhoods generally don’t tend to lock their doors or cars.

Since you want to reference constitutional protections, freedom of speech is included. I live there and have for many years, and there is blatant racism. Especially when you look at the studies of co-op board approval ratings. There are other similar, tangible things to look at. I served on the community board here for years; there are issues dealing with race here that are clear. A fact is a fact, whether you consider that victim rationalization or not is irrelevant.
I think she might’ve been referring to Manhattan parks, did she say the Bronx specifically? Can’t recall! The people in Riverdale serve on the jury and court proceedings in manhattan so I think they forget they’re in the Bronx too.
There is a whole crazy real estate story behind that Villanova Heights section. Existing residents didn't even want those mega mansions built over there. Building a gated community within a gated community.
Karen’s will make Karen statements. It’s not racist is social economic segregation. Restrictive Covenants: Contracts prevented people of certain races from buying homes in specific neighborhoods, limiting opportunities for Black and minority families to build wealth through homeownership. I'm from the oppisite side of NY state, but I was doing a Google street view tour of this part of the Bronx a few months ago, and was shocked that neighborhoods like this exist not far at all from the trenches. It's like an unofficial suburb within the Bronx, with its own municipality and zipcode. Cool.
There are enclaves like this in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten island as well. Even native new Yorkers don't know all these types of areas exist. I've had friends that grew up in Manhattan and when I took them to Malba, Floral Park, Jamaica Estates, Hollis Hills, Holliswood, Douglaston Queens they couldn't believe their eyes. Plenty of Suburban like areas inside the 5 boroughs. You just have to actually explore.
I lived in the east side of Bx River but went to The Fieldston School for JHS & HS on a full scholarship. I remember going to my first Bar Mitzvah at a mansion in the area. At 13, I couldn't believe that people actually lived with so much at their immediate disposal.
Well yes, it’s a wealthy private enclave within one of the worst parts of NYC. Pick a random Fieldston resident and it’s likely their watch or wedding ring are worth several times more than an entire year (or more) of rent for those who live in the bordering neighborhoods. I wouldn’t live here for that extreme contrast alone, it fuels class-wars. However, I don’t blame people for wanting to protect the historic nature of the area, which actually looked mostly like Fieldston until the city demolished sections to build affordable housing in the later 1900’s.
Sorry, but the Bronx is not one of the worst parts of NYC. There are other nice parts of the Bronx as well. The content creator chose to do a segment on this neighborhood. Please stop feeding into the stereotype.

I was born and raised in the Bronx, Raised my sons in the Btonx. Worked in Riverdale taking care of the wealthy for 5.50 and hour in the early 90's. It's been my experience working in those wealthy homes. 1 if your not working for them yiur not welcomed. The people looked at you strange and often asked me do I work for some one. I was never asked was I a resident. I never envied or wanted what I saw in Riverdale. It's a weird cold community and very needy or greedy people. If your greedy and selfish you would definitely fit in. I live in Westchester County and it's a mixed community. We speak to eachother and also mind our buisness. The taxes is high but we stay humble. You can't stop crime not even from within the police department. Crime is in all tax brackets, rich and poor. Those Homes in that area was mostly purchased off of the slave labor.
I tried moving up in the Riverdale area back in the early 80's with my toddler son at the time. I had gainful employment. When my son was turning 5 years old, he had to be privately tested and evaluated for a few of the private schools. He was a candidate for acceptance. The private school sent the results in 2 weeks after the deadline. That is why he wasn't accepted. How many 5 year olds do you know, know the answer to skin graft and transplant, pig, giraffe, bull, cat? Now Riverdale is filled with minorities. The lower part, is not that great as it once was.
😆 THE OLD COMMUNIST KNOWS WHATS GOING ON. BUT IF YOU HAD OLD MONEY YOU'D BE LEERY TOO. BE GRATEFUL THEIR WILLING TO PAY TAXES TO LIVE IN THE CITY. UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND DRUGGIES ARE DEPENDING ON THEM FOR THEIR SSI AND MEDICAID.

All these people complaining about the so called " racists" of Fieldston. They're paying for their private security and they're paying for your NYPD police protection too with the money they pay in taxes.
@wesdiego08 What do you think these people are paying in property taxes for their mansions? What do you think they're paying in NYC income taxes and sale taxes? Add in that few, if any, of their children are taking up seats in public schools, they're paying more than their fair share for what they're getting.
Many of the homeowners in Riverdale declare themselves religious houses... they keep a "synagogue" in their garage - literally. That way they don't pay taxes and get huge subsidies - flat out cash payments for protection. You will notice the proper synagogues in Riverdale look like gated POW camps - cameras, huge barriers and gates and 24 / 7 Police protection.

As a Puerto Rican living in Riverdale someone who made it out the projects I rather live up this way than down the hill. It’s very residential, people are respectful. Walking in Villanova Heights and Feildstone yes you are going to get looks cause they are private neighborhoods. They know who lives in their neighborhood. They pay for private streets. In Riverdale we have protected land to hold on to the natural beauty of nature. People in this community volunteer to clean up the parks and the streets such as the stewards of Henry Hudson Park, Seton and others. This all used to be farm land. I see people unfortunately not from this neighborhood litering and acting the fool sometimes up this way. I believe in having pride in your neighborhood, respecting your neighbors and community and that should be taught to every child. No body bothers you. It’s a working class quiet neighborhood and I pray it stays this way!

Up the hill (as I mentioned above) is generally referred to as the greater Riverdale area, which is not private. As Devil's advocate, while Fieldston streets are privately owned they remain publicly accessible. There are no gates, no "do not enter signs," (with one cul-de-sac exception), nothing to impede travel by anyone etc, so it should be and is 100% expected to be accessed by the public at any time.
According to the guy with the red hat, being successful is a crime. Being smart is shameful. Wanting your kids to live in a safe neighborhood is unthinkable. The ideology he is advocating for is one of blaming other people, never accepting responsibility, and seeing the cup half empty. Every borough in NYC has a nice suburban, quiet, Green, closed off area. It just seems like Fieldston and riverdale is more rare and special because of how the Bronx is portrayed.

@@chioma916 That is not redlining. Redlining means people of a certain ethnicity/race cannot purchase or rent within a certain area (hence the term redlining). In this area, anyone who has the means can purchase and live. But because it is private property, people who do not live there cannot simply walk in. That's called security, and there are many of these neighborhoods all over the country where people of every religion/race/ethnicity live. No one said x group of people can't come in. Great video. I’ve walked through Fieldston before and it really is a ghost town. As a black man (I’m talking for myself here), I would not live there if I had the money. It’s not nearly anywhere on the level of racism most people think. I have family in Riverdale and they’ve lived there their entire lives. Like many neighborhoods in NYC, better neighborhoods usually have different standards in terms of quality of life.
The Bronx has to be the most divided borough. I’m from Long Island but I’ve seen parts of the bronx that are dirt poor and parts that are absolutely stunning. I wonder how much the construction of the expressways and parkways contributed to it.

Any links to the history will be helpful bro , I’m From co-op and only know a little history about my side

How has it changed? For the better or worse?

Food deserts also attribute. I don’t just like the fact that the idea is if you are poor you will commit a crime. Especially when we have billionaires convicted of felonies.
I'm from the South Bronx and lived in Kingsbridge. I had no idea that Fieldston was this nice.
@@crazytimesman I live in Riverdale. @@swizz152 that’s good to know but my point remains. It isn’t racist simply for people to not want certain behavior or even people in their neighborhood, specifically if it is private.
If it’s an open neighborhood, no one can stop you from entering unless by prohibited by law. You aren’t in control of people’s attitudes. The loser’s perspective persists yet again here. Quit rationalizing being a victim of some sort and learn to think critically and for yourself. No harm is done here. The video SUCKS.
@@crazytimesman your point can remain but it is a bit different when the scope is public streets, which I provided clarity on what is referred to as “up the hill” being. You’re right, no one can control people’s attitude whether warm, indifferent, or fueled by racism; You can also call out each one appropriately.

Well yes, it’s a wealthy private enclave within one of the worst parts of NYC.

They are not footing the bill for NYPD. The level of protection they get is subsidized by every other place else in the city. Same as Easten Parkway.

@@chioma916 That is not redlining. Redlining means people of a certain ethnicity/race cannot purchase or rent within a certain area (hence the term redlining). That's called security, and there are many of these neighborhoods all over the country where people of every religion/race/ethnicity live. No one said x group of people can't come in.
