When you hear Layne sing you know his life, however short, was never a waste by any means. Happy Birthday Layne..RIP
So true, he was so amazing of a person And vocalist
It’s so chilling, like layne’s ghost came to do the vocals
I felt the same way. His vocals are a dark lifeless moan. Eerie and sad for sure. RIP Layne.
Tapp Morningwood they had to overdub him pronouncing the letter S, he had no teeth
that's basically what it was, imagine what this song would have sounded like in Layne's prime
Gives me chills
This thread is crazy! Jesus god damn fuck! This is layne Thomas Staley
This cover is so depressing. Knowing this is Layne’s final studio recording. His voice sounded so… lifeless here. He was such an amazing, vibrant singer and personality. To hear him reduced to just a monotonous drone and an audible lisp due to his lack of teeth from all the crack and heroin. It’s just sad, because he was so much more than this. Rest In Peace Layne, I hope you’ve found the peace in the afterlife that evaded you in this one. 💔
I feel like he chose to sing that way intentionally. Don’t get me wrong, he was in very poor shape by 1998, but on the two Alice songs he recorded that year, even though he’s noticeably lesser than on other recordings, he sounds more alive. I feel like his lifelessness here may have been a stylistic choice.
@@russellschwartz9687 possibly, it’s just not his finest performance and for this to be the very last official studio recording of such an incredible singer, it just feels… sad.
@@GregGallagher oh no question about that. I’ve always been so curious what made him decide to do his final recordings. Though he wasn’t quite as reclusive as he would be in his final years, he hadn’t sung live since 1996 and only did one guest vocal in 1997(that we know of.) His physical appearance and overall health had deteriorated immensely in that short time and he was putting himself back out there in a semi public way. I don’t believe he was in a position where he needed the money as he had a steady flow of royalties that could sustain him.
You're a mad man
Know nothing about music.
@@russellschwartz9687 Here is a good behind the scenes of this. ruclips.net/video/jyjSzyjpmA4/видео.html
Its so sad that you can hear a lisp in Laynes voice cuz he was missing teeth :(. He did not deserve to go out the way he did. His voice was the voice of a tormented man. RIP Layne, i hope your happy now wherever you are :(
comments are always talking about how sad it is and blah blah yet they're so obsessively descriptive about everything. makes you think that even though sad, it is probably also fascinating as hell
@@gc8972b what part is fascinating? If its the demons of addiction i completely agree very fascinating stuff
he did it to himself.
@@destrocrimson
Go do the slightest bit of research on addiction.
@@Mewtwosmrmime fuck off
This was the end of a beautiful voice and a very tormented and still wonderful person . RIP Layne.
My heart bleeds when I See and listen to this. Laynes voice and vibe is so dark, yet beautiful! IT doesent matter if he wasn't filmed for the video; he truly showed his soul through this cover. He has a beautiful and broken Soul. I hope he's in peace and gets healing where he is now. RIP ❤️
Lis D he had a honest soul.
@@charlesm8482 He truly did... Layne was such a beautiful person inside and out and I can't say I didn't cry when I saw a video on here (called The Dark Descent of Layne Staley) that went through everything he had gone through... He truly is such a great guy with a kind heart, pure in some way, but his demons, Demri's death, and his own self confidence killed him.... I'm 24 years old writing this and although I wasn't around until 1997, after Alice broke up pretty much, I can say I am a big fan of their work, I know every album and EP they put out, and it still haunts me on some of their darker tracks (like "Am I Inside") just a look into his mind was like and I could feel his pain then even though on Sap he was not too sick.... It absolutely bites the amount of verbal abuse people gave him in his lifetime, including Metallica when Layne couldn't tour with them. Metallica made fun of them on stage and they rightfully had things thrown at them. Can't say I am a fan of them after that. I just hope Layne has found his peace in his death 20 years later. He was such a great guy, a legend, gone way too soon... RIP Layne Staley. 🕊️❤️
I think this is a badass version of this song. Melo, flowing and creepy. Just the way Pink Floyd would want it.
Lemmy avatar is always welcome around here. And yes to your excellent comment.
More so… layne just… didnt care
I think he did care or he wouldn't have done it. He didnt need the money. I like the song and I think this is how he wanted to do it. But I can also understand why some people wouldn't like it, it sounds different.
Being 50 and from the area I feel so lucky to have been around to see the "Seattle Bands" in their prime. Not that they aren't good now but in the 90's they were my guiding force
It's really sad that this is his last recording. There is just nothing really going on with the vocals. He was so much more than this. I'm so glad I was able to turn around out of my own addiction and always think of how sad he must have been those last days knowing it had won. I only hope he found peace.
True, but I think that his voice here fits perfectly with the overall sound and layne’s story
I think his voice is perfect for this, low, dark and droning. Just the way it's supposed to be. It fits the mood of the song. As for you, I'm so glad that you were able to overcome your demons. Some aren't so lucky. My fiance, like Layne, was one of those unlucky ones. I, too, hope they found peace on The Other Side. Good luck to you and may God Bless You & Keep you. 💖
And some people still glorify the way he died...... I think Layne himself was quite clear that is never what he wanted.
Possibly the best cover of this song ever. Wished that Class of '99 made an album. it would have been amazing.
Layne likely wouldn’t have been well enough for that sadly.
This is making break down in tears how could something like this happen to a person like lane Staley
How can this happen to anyone?
man they couldnt have picked a better person to do this song. When this movie came out and this song did I about shit myself when I heard Layne covered it..he was and still is the most badass guy in rock history
the vocal still kicks ass
If layne would have sung this back in 92 or 90 he would have scream HEY, THEACHERS!...
but he was really weak by that time, he sings as creepy as what he was going thru
You are not even close. Layne sounded awesome in 1994 Jar of Flies. 1996 self titled and 1996 MTV Unplugged.
Sometimes he really sounds weak. "Mad Season i don't know anything live" do you know this ? I would say he sounds weak. And also he looks weak there. For me it is hard to watch.
He was EPIC in all live Mad Season sets
Lindsay Soldo the song ''wake up''
Amazing song. Or ''artifical red''
Malawifreak 83 his vocals were still on point during the recording of the Mad Season album. During the unplugged is where you can really tell a difference. If they would have done the unplugged during the 1993 tour or even early 1994, that would have been a fantastic show.
Years since his passing, and still no voice like his. Layne is timeless
You have to understand that Layne had no intention of doing music or albums by this time. Apart from his declining health he was more interested in his clay making and poetry. He only did this because of A) he was great friends with Morello and B) Waters autorized this version- which was the first time that he had done that.
k8nd glad they didn't film him. I mean he was sick and slowly dying here. would we really Want to see that image? I want to remember him as the greatest front man in rock. hands down. that unique and awesome voice
Philip Streva I saw a pic of him from 98 or 99 he looked nothing like his formal self, he honestly looked like an 80 year old man, very sad!!!!! RIP LAYNE..🎸🎸
I kinda look at it from both points. For the video he would of looked good especially based on the movie it was representing but I'm like u and wanna remember him in his glory days. He's definitely my all-time favorite vocalist.
They didn't film him for died or get born again as his appearance was bad
I would have liked it. It would have fit the creepy video too. The toothless smiles and discolored gangrene skin
@@kevinwhiting8391 I thought it was because he wouldn't make himself available during the times they wanted to do the video.. but maybe I'm confused
I'm a huge layne fan. This brought tears to my eyes
Same
rest in peace, layne...
Every clip of Layne in this vid was taken form the live Mad Season concert at the Moore
Yeah I guess he wasn't exactly in the best physical shape at the time. He had lost most of his teeth. Also he had a really bad lisp which they had to edit after he recorded
Same with the get born again video.
@@davidneumann2705 get born again video is super haunting
X Ray mind song
Really fucked up how drugs can end up doing this much damage to someone, what a fucked up thing we have in this world. Layne Staley (1967-2002) rest in peace
For me that U dont hv money is protecting me and The fact that heroin hardly exists here in Finland nowadays.
Gonna be honest, this is heart wrenching to listen to. Layne sounds absolutely lifeless. He was dead in spirit at this point. He wasn't himself anymore.
i dont really think this is true though. theres recordings of him talking in 1998 & 1999 and he doesnt sound miserable, he was laughing, being sarcastic & joking around. thats not to say he wasnt struggling enormously but to make out like he was 100% shut in living in abject misery eating out of bins seems wrong too. i dont think its possible to even perform this song in laynes traditional aic style, it wouldnt make sense
I think what sucks is that you can tell his pronunciation sounds off. I don’t know if that’s intentional or was he already feeling the effects of prolonged drug use. Also, the fact that his vocals are so heavily laden with effects. I feel like 1991 Lane Staley would have belted the shit out of this song.
He was missing his front teeth at the time
@@nibblatron I have depression. It’s really easy to hide it, as you realize that people DNGAF if you’re feeling down. So you pretend to be happy, laugh, say everything is fine. But you can only keep up that charade for a short time.
This version of Layne is how I was from August of 2020 to June of this year. I’m slowly reclaiming my life, but I have a whole host of physical and mental health problems. I’m in physical pain everyday, and the pandemic turned me into an agoraphobic recluse.
@@turnupthesun81I think by this point he was missing most of his teeth and you can tell
layne sounds so sick... it's so sad but he still managed to sound beautiful
And he looks so sick 1:33 😔
Malawifreak 83
And that was from a Mad Season performance 4 years prior.
no name 1998 ?
TheHagen83
Class of 99 was in, wait for it...1999. Mad Season was in 1995.
no name Ah Yes i thought 4 years before his death. Sorry my fault.
Even without teeth, he still has the greatest voice in all of rock history in my opinion. His voice is one of a kind & nobody can belt it out like he could. His voice is still hauntingly beautiful even without teeth. His appearance getting worse is one of the reasons why he became so reclusive, which is sad. He was still amazing without some damn teeth & I wish he couldve known that. Layne was so badass, he still had some of "The Greats" wanting to work w/him even when he was missing some teeth!
I'd say one of the best. What about Led Zeppelin?
@@andronikisa I’d say Laynes voice was more powerful than Robert plants.. I mean cmon
What's even worse, is he could not see a way out. Depression and addiction are lethal. Poor guy 😥
fucking teeth yo
You realize it had little to do with cosmetics right? His fiance died and he practically gave up.
This cover was PERFECT!! Layne has the most beguiling voice ever. Beautiful man, gone too soon. When I listen to this song, I can feel the adrenaline coursing through me. Well done Layne!!!
Absolutely
I'm a die hard Pink Floyd fan, and I always loved this cover!
trixen this is the best cover of all
It a horrifying cover. Horrifying in the way you can actually HEAR how bad of shape layne was in. He sounds like hes on his death bed.
I remember when this came out, as i was and still am a big fan of the movie, and been a fan of alice in chains since 1990.
And when when this came out back in 98 when i was only 12, hearing it i got this weird haunting feeling that i couldnt pinpoint. It wasnt a "scary movie" feeling but something more real and dreadful. I was aware of laynes herion problems before, but this song really made me "aware".
you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger AIC fan than me, and he's awesome in Mad Season as well, but this isn't his A game. Its not even his D game. Its really sad, because he had a hugely dynamic , vibrant, and unique voice, where here he's reduced to barely moaning. A painful look at what happens when you can't defeat your own demons. RIP Layne
I agree but I think his vocal really suits this song. It just adds to the atmosphere.
Regardless, it’s a shame what happened to him. He was definitely one of the best.
This is was his last studio appearance. So heavily edited cause Layne had no teeth left and the letter s his Lisp really was apparent. It’s really sad.
hadomaru sad and yes you can hear the mushy lisp of his missing teeth so sad one of the greatest voices of all time laid low
hadomaru I love this version all low and creepy. Better then the original and he was still on his A game to me!
His D game is equivalent of A game for most singers
Layne Staley de Alice in Chains en voz; Tom Morello de Rage Against The Machine en guitarra; Stephen Perkins de Jane's Addiction en batería y Martin LeNoble de Porno for Pyros en bajo... ¿podría resultar malo? The Best!
Si la verdad, lo mismo digo de Audioslave (Soundgarden+ Rage Against The Machine) y Velvet Revolver (Stone Temple Pilots+ GNR)
Estoy de acuerdo contigo familia. Soy un fan grande de todas las bandas.
We miss you Layne. I wish you knew how many people cared and were rooting for you to overcome. Thanks for the great music you gave us.
Layne Staley and Tom Merello covering Pink Floyd is just the best cover of all all time. Nothing will ever outdo this. Not even Korn, which was unbelievable.
Knowing that this was his Last recording is heart breaking! His pain & darkness can be heard in full💔🖤
Even with missing teeth, he still has the greatest voice ever in the history of rock in my opinion. Layne voice is hauntingly beautiful with or without teeth and nobody will ever be able to belt it out like he could. RIP Layne - The music just isn't as good without you!
I hate heroin
Idk what happened to it. But awhile back there was a rough mix floating around and layne having lost his teeth. His toothless lisp was very noticeable. With the final mix you can barely notice.
I'm not a huge fan of Tom Morello but damn, what a super group! I wish they would have done more together. Unbelievable talent on this song
dude when tom starts jamming it totally sounds like rageeeee but layne comes back to make it sound like alice
the old layne would have screamed this song into oblivion. its so sad to hear him so underwhelming, its almost unrecognizable.
It saddens me his talents are his strengths not his drug use.. He was addicted ya by late 90s he was in bad shape from years of drug abuse.. His pain was self chosen
Put aside him being weak from the addiction and not being able to make 'S' sounds due to having no teeth. I think the biggest factor is that there are no Jerry Cantrell vocals, which drastically improved the sound of Layne's vocals. If Jerry's vocals and harmonies hadn't been present in the Alice in Chains songs, Layne would have never been known as the great vocalist he is regarded as today. He was very, very overrated as a singer, imo.
..a lot of ppl don't realize that Layne's vocals were dramatically cleaned up with Pro Tools on this cover. He couldn't make 'S' sounds...and you can tell. Even with them heavily editing his vocal takes, it is still very evident.
Michael R. Overrated? Go look at Cantrell’s solo work and modern Aic. It’s not the same quality. Prime Layne took that band to another level.
@@michaelr.4878 What are your thoughts on Mad Season? Also, listen to the Rooster demo, I love that, probably my favourite studio Layne vocal.
Michael R. Jerry did not back up Layne on facelift, he sang his part but not much harmonizing, facelift is arguably one of the greatest rock and rock Albums of all time I’m just going to leave it at that!
In the late 90’s you were either up getting ready for school listening to Layne and Tom cover a Floyd song about Frodo and T1000 or you weren’t.
Paul Sansonetti Elijah Woods and Robert Patrick...
My favorite singer covering an absolute JAM originally done by my favorite band.
You can tell this was recorded after Staley lost his teeth :(
+EddieStilson ™ did you just read that in the new Alice in Chains book? (like I did)
Yeah, it is very obvious. It was obvious on the AIC Unplugged album too. He had some teeth at that point, but was missing either all of his tops or bottoms, I can't remember. Even with heavy post editing on Pro Tools, he still sounds like he has no teeth. Especially on words like 'kids'. 'Leave those kidthhhh alone'
bootlegottawa what’s the book called man? Seriously interesting in reading. My favorite band of all time.
Yeah that's sad. I watched a video that said he lost all of his teeth by just 31st birthday and when they were recording on his bday he had a really bad lisp. Really sad to hear that
I always thought that after watching the Unplugged. I have the book as well. Haven't read it yet though
This is an amazing cover, but at the same time, it just breaks my heart. I never had to deal with the aftermath in the same way that my mom did, since I was born in 2005; I've always known him as dead. But when I got into AIC, it quickly became my favorite band and Layne became one of my biggest inspirations. I don't like to idolize people since it puts them on a pedestal, but he's the closest person I have to an idol; and he was a very flawed person.
I try to focus on his life before he isolated himself because I think it's important to celebrate someone who has passed away rather than only mourning them. I mean if I died, I don't think I'd want people to be sad every single time they thought of me. But this is just a long-winded way of saying that because I try to focus on his life when he was healthy, I tend to avoid looking at anything from later on when he was at his worst.
I feel like too many people focus on his addiction, and it was an important aspect of his life, but they act like that's ALL he was. They never talk about the good times in his life, his personality, his sense of humor. He's always painted as a tragic artist, and that's true, but he was so much more than a tragic artist. It just feels like the people who do that are the same people who seem to ignore his good moments. Not just good performances, but times where he was actually happy and just having fun (like when he did that goofy ass dave mustaine impression that makes me lose my shit every time i see it)
I don't know, this is getting really long and it's kind of all over the place, but I have a lot of feelings about Layne. It's just heartbreaking thinking about his last few years. Because this is a good cover, but you can hear how he had deteriorated. And death wasn't instant. I feel like when you isolate yourself for so long, when you lose that much weight, it's just a long, drawn out, death.
And no one deserves to go out that way, especially not Layne.
Easily one of the best covers ever, I was too young at the time but I just found out that was Layne Staley and Tom Morello in there!!!!! So fucking awesome!!!
I'm glad layne did this song. I think he did a great job with this song. It's hard for any group or any musician to do a remake of a song to make it sound good
sounds. creepy but in a awesome creepy way. but his voice has a raspy smooth beauty
You say that as if you're surprised. This is Layne Staley we are talking about here; one of the all time greatest rock vocalists in history.
Love this, my favorite version of this song. By the GOAT'S Layne & Morello✌️💜😎
I hate listening to this, yet i can't stop.... You can tell Layne was really sick when this was recorded and it breaks my heart.... RIP Layne
many times i've thougt that this is better than the original one.
Woo this brought chills down my spine. Rest in Peace Layne Staley 🖤
It amazes me that Layne agreed to do this with the state he was in
You need money to buy heroin 🤷♂️
@@bigbowlowrong4694 he didn't need it
Man legends never die we miss you Layne!
This is a tough listen for sure. But, Layne's health and condition gives an already bleak song an added somberness.
Instrumentals are peak late-90's though. Morello's guitar mixed with some electronica and an orchestra straight out of P-Diddy's "Come With Me".

Sometimes I imagine I'm a time traveler going back to rescue Layne. Giving him comfortable rehab, new teeth, and all the MGS games he could play.
Over 2 decades...and my dumb azz is JUST NOW realizing this was Layne singing & that this was a supergroup. I guess to be fair, i never looked it up & around the time of this release, it was AOL 56K Modem days...Today i decided to research it. 😮 🤯

love the movie and layne!! best version by far
Pay close attention to this. Every musician who participated in covering this song was filmed playing their instruments in the studio. Everyone except for Layne Staley, that is. The video directors had to use old clips of Layne taken from previously filmed live Alice In Chains concert footage from the early 90s. They had to keep his appearances in this video brief so no one would notice his lips are singing a different song altogether. The directors were forced to go this route because by 1999 Layne only weighed about 110 lbs, was white as a ghost, his forearms and hands were covered in track marks & sores, and he was missing several teeth- much too unhealthy to be filmed in his current condition.
damn, such a shame!
it is a concert footage of Mad Season, band that Staley formed with Mike McCready, Barrett Martin,John Baker Saunders ....
He never even met with anyone to do this project, they just sent him the tape and he worked his voice over it from his apartment in Seattle then sent it back
+danathor99 No. Layne was in studio for this. Everyone said he looked like shit though.
+Maxwell Catlett and the studio was in his apartment
Tom Morello deserves praise for DAT RIFF :)
I used to think KoRns cover was the best cover of Another Brick in the Wall, then I heard this one
Layne's voice is perfect for this song, hell most of the wall
Under rated movie. I went to see it twice in the theater
Karen Mysti I went like 8 times 😂
Awesome cover of a great song.
RIP Layne. You are so missed man!! It’s heart breaking even today! 😰😰❤️❤️ But the music will live on...
@Kjirkoh Of course it does - try saying an 'S' w/o touching your top teeth - if the teeth are missing, it would make a 'lisp.' The same thing would happen w/ the 'Th' sound. Besides, the producer said when he recorded this song he was missing teeth. You can hear the same sounds in Get Born Again when he sings 'Save all your Sins' - 'S's' make a lisp. Missing teeth doesn't effect the sound of the voice, but most definitely the pronounciation of words.
this brings back memories from when i first saw the faculty back in 97
faculty was made in 98
The best cover with my love Layne Staley 😍
I think it's an Awesome cover and Laynes voice is very very good
