Wes Anderson's first 3 films were Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. I'd put those up against any director's first 3. Tarantino, George Lucas, Ridley Scott also came out the gate really strong - to name a few.

People don't walk out of a movie because they aren't in the mood for it. That only happens when they truly despise it. There's a small minority that really likes this movie, but most people do think it's incredibly bad.

The theme of Idiocracy is fundamentally critical of a consumption driven society, which must at once by implication be highly critical of a profit driven culture, as well. With that in mind, the class of people from whom the decisions come to distribute and promote a film, or not, are concerned with the sustainability of their model of culture. So even if they could have turned a healthy profit on this one film, the additional critical success and popularity would propagate a message they would rather not.
