  • Father Brown unravels the mystery surrounding the murder of a philandering local squire. The culprit seems obvious, he has means and motive... but he was miles away at the time. And why was such a small hammer chosen as the murder weapon?
A new, original recording of a classic public domain text, read and performed by Simon Stanhope for Bitesized Audio.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was an English author, theologian, philosopher and critic, who produced a wide-ranging output of fiction, poetry and journalism. His writing covered a wide variety of subjects, ranging from crime fiction to Christianity. His most famous novel is probably the "metaphysical thriller" 'The Man Who Was Thursday' (1908), but his most famous fictional creation is surely Father Brown, the Catholic priest-detective who featured in more than 50 short stories published episodically between 1910 and 1936. A complete contrast to his (near) contemporary Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown is quiet, unassuming and solves crimes with instinct, intuition and a deep understanding of human nature.
'The Hammer of God' was first published under the title 'The Bolt from the Blue' in The Saturday Evening Post on 5 November 1910, and the following year as part of 'The Innocence of Father Brown', the first of several books which comprise the Father Brown series.

I'm not sure they do read the comments. I sort of hope they don't, because if they do it presumably would indicate they just don't care what the listeners think. I do think it's a simple mistake where they just don't realise I'm producing all this myself and they think I've stolen it all from the BBC or someone, as it seems so many other channels do. I struggle to comprehend that they can possibly confuse what I do with somebody posting automated readings of Wikipedia articles or news items etc. Anyway, I'm still going through their official appeals process and will certainly post an update when I have news on that. I'm also investigating alternative platforms to move to in the event they force me to shut down. Are you referring to the captions / subtitles? If so, then you may have switched on the "auto-generated" captions - I have no control over them and, yes, I agree they are always full of typos and lack any punctuation. For this reason I normally upload my own captions file with correct spelling for those who wish to read along. I've just checked and the captions on this story are all correct at this end. When you switch the captions on it should give you the choice between captions in English (the ones I've uploaded) and auto-generated... but exactly how it works may vary depending on your browser and/or device (tablet, phone, pc etc). I hope that helps.
